30042014 - Dalby State School

Edition 12 – 30th April 2014 -Week 2 Term 2
Principals Pen,
Our talented senior singers and school concert band put on a wonderful performance during our annual
ANZAC Ceremony, which was held at Kavney Hall on Wednesday last week. I would like to thank our School
Captains and School Vice Captains who did a terrific job as MCs for the ceremony. Thank you also to Mrs
Michelle Parry (ex-service defence personnel) and Mrs Gail Geike (RSL Representative) for their attendance at
this important occasion, and to Miss Fiona Ellem, Mr Greg Mackay, Miss Commens, Mr McPherson and Mrs
Smith for their support of participating students. Many thanks must also go to students, parents and staff
who represented Dalby State School in the ANZAC March last Friday.
Our school rugby league team competed in the finals of the Dalby inter-school competition this afternoon.
The outcome of this game was unknown at the time of writing, however I am sure that all players competed
in a spirit of good sportsmanship and to the best of their ability. I would like to thank Mr Kavney and Mr Parry
for training and supporting our students during this competition. Well done to everyone involved.
Just a reminder that ICAS (International Competition Assessment of Schools) will begin soon for some
students. Information was provided in our recent school newsletter. This is a user-pay system, so, if your
student is interested in participating, please make payment at the office. Students from Year 3- 7 can
participate in the Computer skills test, English, Maths, Science, Spelling and Writing test. Year 2 students are
able to participate in the English and Maths assessment this year for the first time. If you would like more
information, please contact the school or email queries to Mrs Maguire.
Other upcoming events include the school Cross Country and the Wakakirri Disco, both of which are being
held this Friday (May 2). For information about the Cross Country, contact the school office or ask to speak to
Mr Kavney. The Wakakirri Disco, to be supervised by teachers and parents, will be held at Kavney Hall from
6-8pm. The cost of entry is $3 and there will be glow products and food/drink for sale. This event will raise
much-needed funds to support our Wakakirri performance and I would encourage everyone to participate
and have fun! For more information, please contact the office.
NAPLAN testing is scheduled for Tuesday 13th May through to Thursday 15th May.
What is the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)?
NAPLAN are literacy and numeracy tests run every May in all schools and colleges across Australia, to assess
the achievement of students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The literacy tests assess reading, writing, and ‘language
conventions’ which includes spelling grammar and punctuation. The numeracy tests assess number, algebra,
function and pattern, measurement, chance and data, and space.

Why is NAPLAN valued by schools?
Student results from NAPLAN support principals and teachers to identify where improvements can be made to the literacy and numeracy programs
their school delivers. NAPLAN data is used as part of a suite of resources to inform practice in the classroom and is regularly used as a valuable
component of whole school planning for improvement and reporting on student progress.
What does my child gain from participating in NAPLAN?
The tests present an important opportunity for both primary and secondary students to learn about their strengths in literacy and numeracy. With the
support of their teachers, students can use their results to see how their learning is developing and where they can focus future learning.
How does NAPLAN help measure my child’s achievement?
NAPLAN can be seen as a ‘snapshot’ of your child’s performance. The results reflect each student’s performance at a single point in time and contribute
to school reporting on student progress in literacy and numeracy, alongside VELS teacher judgments and other assessments already used in schools.
Principles Pen Continued . . .
Can my child be prepared for the NAPLAN tests?
NAPLAN is not a test of content. Instead, it tests skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time through the school
curriculum, so excessive preparation is not useful. Students are prepared by their teachers to feel comfortable in the test environment,
and to confidently demonstrate what they know and can do. Supervising Test Administrators (usually teachers) are always present
during the tests to support students. Parents are encouraged to contact their school principal or teacher if they have any concerns about
their child sitting NAPLAN.
What happens if my child is sick on one of the test days?
Schools organise for individual students who are not in attendance at the time of testing to complete missed tests at another time during
testing week.
Does every child sit the NAPLAN tests?
It is recommended that every student in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 take part in NAPLAN, given its importance to school planning and student
learning. There can be exceptions to student participation. For students with disabilities or serious illness, schools may grant exemptions
in consultation with parents or carers. Parents or carers make the final decision regarding exemptions on a signed form before NAPLAN
commences. Students from a language background other than English with a low level of proficiency in the English language, and who
have arrived from overseas less than a year before the test are also exempt. Students may be withdrawn from the NAPLAN testing
program if their parents or carers choose to do so. Parents or carers make the final decision regarding withdrawals on a signed form
before NAPLAN commences.
What extra support can schools give to students with disability or temporary injury during a test?
Disability adjustments can be granted for these students that are similar to the kind of support they would usually be provided with in
the classroom. Provisions can include extra time, rest breaks. If you have any other additional questions about NAPLAN, please contact
me at school

LOTE – Bonjour! Comment allez-vous?
Term Two sees our LOTE classes enjoying their first taste of French language and culture. In our first few weeks we will focus on learning how to share warm greetings and introduce ourselves to others. You might hear some students at school or at home saying “Salut!
Ça va?” (Hi! How are you doing?) or “Bonjour! Comment allez-vous?” (Hello! How are you?). To help them practice, and for you to have
some fun too, how about trying a response such as: “Ça va très bien” (It’s going very well) or “comme ci comme ça” (So-so) and “Et
toi?” (And you?)? And as you wave goodbye to students put on your best French accent and say “Au revoir”, “à bientôt” or “Adieu!”

After School Student Collection
From Week 2 we will be providing parents with a supervised alternative
location to collect students after school. This is due to congestion at the
Cunningham Street entrance and reduced number of car parks
available. Key points to consider:
Students will wait in an undercover area near the entrance to Kavney
Hall. They will be supervised by a staff member from 3.00 - 3.30pm.
Parents are encouraged to try to park on the school side of Jimbour
Street as this avoids students/ parents from having to cross the street.
If students have to cross they must be met by a parent/ adult.
On rainy days children will wait inside Kavney Hall and watch for the
arrival of a parent.
Please consider these arrangements as they may make collection easier
and quicker.
