Thumbs up for
surfing in Mossel Bay
Mossel Bay’s Point is unique indeed
when it comes to surfing. It has two
waves breaking next to each other, Inner Pool and Outer Pool. The prevailing
wind is an offshore south westerly, which
brings the swell from Cape Town and the
roaring forties.
Outer Pool works on a low tide. It has an
easy take-off with a slow tapering shoulder that stands up at the bottom section,
creating a big turn section which, if you
are fortunate, can push up into a barrel.
Inner Pool is a high tide wave and is
more for a hot-dogging. The infamous
‘Peanut Butter’ rock lurks halfway down
the line, sometimes catching visitor and
unsuspecting local alike!
Inside the bay, there are two reefs that
work on different tides, swell directions
and sizes.
In addition to the point and reef breaks,
we have a friendly learn-to-surf beach at
the back of the bay, called Diaz strand.
Then for those surfers who like to explore, there are many beaches and
points working on different swells and
winds, all within 100km radius, that will
blow your mind. Surfers can also visit
Jeffreys Bay, which is only a 3.5 hour
drive away.
The local surfers are very friendly, but
you could run into trouble if you don’t
show them respect!

SEA & SAND
Global shark research comes to Mossel Bay
Depending on what tackle you have
and what you will be targeting, here are
a couple of pointers from the ‘locals’ on
where to cast your line.
Mussel Crackers: Beneke se Klip,
Hartenbos, on the white swimming
crabs, or at The Point. However, the
water is very dangerous so rather check
where and when the locals go. Not a
spot for a newcomer.
Cob/Shad: Little Brak River, but don’t
try at the parking by the river mouth,
turn left when you get there. There is
another parking where the rocks meet
the sand about 1km to the left of the
river mouth.
The whole stretch of beach is good, but
the best spot is about 100m from where
the rocks stop. The tide is not as important as being there from two hours before sunset to two hours after. Elf can
be thick here at times. Best bait would
be fresh octopus that you caught on the
rocks there, feelers still twitching, and
sardines.
Shad (Elf): Banke/Dias Strand, just before the De Bakke holiday resort. On the
beach, the best bait is live mullet. Also
belman and steenbras caught from this

beach. From the rocks, anything goes
and anything can be caught.
Leervis and Cob: The Dana Bay stretch
of beach; walking a long stretch back
towards Mossel Bay, will result in good
catches, but you must be prepared to
walk for it.
Steenbras and Garricks: Santos beach
delivers good white steenbras in summer. Shad bites there at night and lots of
big stingrays can be seen around.
Blacktail: Little Brak or Tergniet offer
nice blacktail and the like.
Wildeperd, Bloukop and Kolstert:
Reebok abound with these.
Things to bear in mind:
* Do not to fish in Marine Protected Areas
or Marine Conservation Areas and ensure that you have the necessary permit.
* Take note of regulations pertaining to
