Lesson 1: The Church What does it mean to call a pastor? In this study we will clarify all these issues. 1. What is a call? 2. Who does ministry, and what are called workers? 3. Who calls workers and how do they know which church to serve? 4. What is the church? 1. What is a church? Examine the founda%on of the church in Ma'hew 16:13-19. The main ques%on that the church answers is ... Churches some%me get off track on that issue. List some of the ques%ons that vie for the posi%on of “main ques%on” in the church. Diane says, “I know a gal who works with one of my friends over at the Jewish Community Center. They do retreats, service projects, and fund raisers. Maybe we could get her for a youth director...” According to this verse, where does informa%on about the church, it’s establishment, and it’s main focus come from? Fred says, “My company has just reorganized using a Demming model of management. T think that the church should do the same!” What is the rock that the church is built on? What main job did Jesus give the church to do? (See also John 20:22) Which part of the task is easier? Why? Chip says, “We want a youth director that will be able to be a best friend to our kids, a real pal.” 2. Where is the church? Is the church limited geographically? What is our rela%onship with Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Diamond Bar, CA? Mt. Calvary Missionary Bap%st in Tuscaloosa, AL? Note how John Describes the churches of Turkey (Asia Minor) in Revela%on 2:1, 8, 12, 18, 3:1, 7, 14. The Church, in the proper sense of the term, is the communion of saints, that is, the sum total of all those who have been called by the Holy Spirit through the Gospel from out of the lost and condemned human race, who truly believe in Christ, and who have been sanc%fied by this faith and incorporated into Christ. The Theses on the Church, (C.F.W. Walther, approved by the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod in 1851) Thesis 1: Hulda says, “Church is just different here than where I came from. It’s just not the same. I miss my church.” How does the church “do what it does?” In an improper sense the term “Church” according to the Holy Scripture is applied also to the visible sum total of all who have been called, that is, to all who profess allegiance to the Word of God that is preached and make use of the holy Sacraments. This Church (the universal[catholic] Church) is made up of good and evil persons. Par%cular divisions of it, namely, the congrega%ons found here and there, in which the Word of God is preached and the holy Sacraments are administered, are called churches (par%cular churches), for the reason, namely, that in these visible groups the invisible, true Church of the believers, saints, and children of God is concealed, and because no elect person are to be looked for outside of the group of those who have been called. The Theses on the Church, (C.F.W. Walther, approved by the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod in 1851) Thesis 4: 3. What about our church? Inves%gate Ma'hew 18:15-18. When the issue is sin, repentance, and restora%on, who is to be involved? Who is the last authority in the declara%on of who is forgiven or not forgiven? Bob said, “I’m the main giver in this church. It would fold without me. I’ll decide who we hire as pastor.” Do you think Jesus was instruc%ng us to put an add in every church bulle%n in Texas to declare forgiveness? Why do you think it is important that the church seek a unanimity in such ma'ers? Clarence stood up in the voter’s mee+ng and declared, “I’ve never agreed with the doctrine of original sin. I vote we overturn it.” What is the rela%onship between the church in the wider sense and the church in the narrower sense? Bubba said, “We’re sending all this money to Synod. If the folks in California want to save souls, let em pay for it themselves.” Lesson 2: The Office of the Ministry 1. Everyone a Priest? Take a look at 1 Peter 2:4-5, 9. Who does “you” refer to? Who could be a priest in the Old Testament (mes? What did they do? What is the purpose of your priesthood? Rev. Bob said, “You are just a layman. It’s my job to proclaim the gospel.” Compare the above to 2 Corinthians 5:18-21. Who is Paul speaking to here? What is the job descrip(on for the job of ambassador? When an ambassador has an audience with the king of the country he is assigned to it is not his opinion on policy that ma/ers, but that of the king he represents. How does this relate to being an ambassador for Christ? Why should every Chris(an be an ambassador for Christ? Rev. Bob was unconvinced, “Lay people just can’t explain theology like seminary trained people can.” 2. I Gave at the Office. Inspect Ephesians 4:10-16. Make a list of the “offices” or func(ons God gives to people in the church. Can there ever be “The office of Evangelism” without an “Evangelist”? Why/why not? Who established these offices? If God establishes the office, what does that say about the person occupying it? What impact might this have on our Nomina(ng Commi/ee? ... Call Commi/ee? Whose domain are we entering? O$o said, “Call schmall! The Pastor and DCE are nothing but hired hands!” What is the reason God established these “offices” in the church? See if you can find at least 7. Find out how the early church selected their people in Acts 6:1-6. What was the “office” that the Jerusalem Chris(ans were selec(ng? What were the criteria for selec(ng people to these offices? Gwynn said, “Let’s have all our DCE candidates take a DiSC temperament analysis survey. That’s what we do when we hire people at work.” Who made the selec(on? How was it obvious that this was God’s choice? Rev. Jim never went to seminary. In fact, he never went anywhere. He simply bought a black suit, rented a storefront, and put out his shingle. 3. Should We Hire a Director of Mercy? Scan through Romans 12:6-8 and 1 Corinthians 12:27-31. What other “offices” might there be in the church? Hugo’s uncle was a deacon in his church back in Virginia. Hugo always wondered why his church didn’t have a deacon. Not that 1 Corinthians 12:31 almost encourages Chris(ans to covet certain giBs. A be/er transla(on might be “You are striving aBer greater giBs ... but I will show you a be/er way.” Are there “more important or less important” giBs? The holy ministry, or the pastoral office, is an office dis(nct from the priestly office, which belongs to all believers. The ministry, of the pastoral office, is not a human ordinance, but an office established by God Himself. The ministry of preaching is not an arbitrary office, but its character is such that the Church has been commanded to establish it and is ordinarily bound to it (ll the end of days.” The Theses on the Ministry, (C.F.W. Walther, approved by the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod in 1851) Thesis 1,2, & 3. Lesson 3: The Call 1. Have You Been Called? The term “call” is used in several ways in Scripture. When we speak of “calling” pastor, what does that mean. Jude speaks of all Chris#ans with what term? Jude 1. Jesus used the term “call” when he told the parable of the Great Banquet. See if you can iden#fy the word that “call” is translated to in Ma+hew 22:3. What is this “call” to? (By the way, who are the ones doing the calling? Do these represent the “priesthood of all believers” or the “office of the ministry” as we discussed last week? ) Paul defines the word call by using synonyms in Romans 8:29-30. When a person “hears the call of God” in this sense, what has happened? Jesus understood that there was a separate type of calling to those who come to faith and those who are chosen by Him for leadership. How is this described in Mark 3:13-14? Rudy said, “I don’t see any sense in having pastors. Everyone is called by God. We’re all priests. Let’s just take turns wri!ng sermons.” 2. Called to What? God has called us to something specific. When you become a Chris#an you are called to: A. Romans 1:6 B. Romans 1:7 C. Romans 8:28 D. 1 Corinthians 1:2 E. 1 Corinthians 1:9 F. Ephesians 4:4 G. 1 Peter 2:9 O.K. So God calls us. Just how does this happen? 2 Thessalonians 2:14 How does God use people in this process? Romans 10:14-15 Benton said, “I heard God’s call in my heart! I was out in the woods looking at the trees and thinking of the cycle of the seasons and then I knew for sure that everything was O.K.” God does call each of us in another way. What kind of call is Paul talking about in 1 Corinthians 7:17, 20, 24? To what have you been called? Francine said, “Because I don’t work at church I don’t think God really cares what I do.” 3. Calling a Pastor. Jesus clearly set apart certain of his followers for the purpose of leadership. Review Mark 3:13-14. Do you think that he was talking about the “call to repentance” when he used the term in Ma+hew 10:1? Paul understood that he had a calling beyond being “just a Chris#an. Compare Romans 1:1 with vs. 6, 7. Who called Paul? When the early Chris#ans needed to call another leader, how did they do the task? Compare the following three: ♦ Acts 1:23-26 ♦ Acts 6:1-6 ♦ Acts 13:1-3 Ma!lda said, “I think that before we call a new Youth Director the en!re congrega!on should fast and gather for prayer each night this week.” Lesson 3: The Call 1. Have You Been Called? The term “call” is used in several ways in Scripture. When we speak of “calling” pastor, what does that mean. Jude speaks of all Chris#ans with what term? Jude 1. How Does God Call A Person? So how is it that God calls a person to a par cular ministry? Let’s take a look at some of the calls of God. When God told Philip to minister to a person, the explana on is simple. Acts 8:26-27, 39. How do you envision the “angel of the Lord” doing this thing? Paul’s call to preach the Gospel in Macedonia was similar to Philip’s. Inves gate Acts 16:9-14. How did Paul know that he was called? What did Paul do with the call? How do you think that God verified his call? Does the success of the ministry indicate the calling of God? What is a successful ministry? Edwin beamed at the crowd. “We truly did God’s will in calling Rev. Eusebio Perez. Look at all the people here!” Edwin beamed at the crowd. “We truly did God’s will in calling Rev. Elmer Gantry. Look at all the people here!” What is the difference between the calls that God gave to Paul and Philip and the call we extend to a Pastor or Director of Chris an Educa on? 2. The Laying on of Hands. The inclusion of the congrega onal community comes when we look at what happens in “they laying on of hands.” Some of you have seen this when you have gone to an installa on, ordina on, or confirma on. Let’s take a look at the background of this church ordinance. The “Laid Upon” The Purpose of LOOH God’s Action The Community’s Action Genesis 48:13-14 Leviticus 3:2 Numbers 8:8-11 Numbers 27:16-21 Norbert was ge$ng relieved. The Youth Board had just commissioned a new Youth Director, “I’m ,red and I quit. We called Ms. Vasquez to do this job, and now she can take over. I’ve done it long enough.” Young Timothy was a pastor. His mentor, Paul, gave him instruc ons in 1 and 2 Timothy. He recalled Timothy’s ordina on in 1 Timothy 4:14. What happened when he was ordained? Why is it important to be ordained by “elders.” Why not “youngers?” What gi; was “given” at this me? The Theses on the Ministry, (C.F.W. Walther, approved by the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod in 1851) Thesis VI: The ministry of preaching is conferred by God through the congrega on, as holder of all church power, or of the keys, and by its call, as prescribed by God. The ordina on of those called, with the laying on of hands, is not by divine ins tu on built is an apostolic church ordinance and merely a public, solemn confirma on of the call. Sister Salmonella huffed, “He’s not a real preacher. The hands laid on him did not go all the way to Peter. He’s a fake.” 3. Hands and the Gi!s. Return to Acts 6:1-6. What selec on process did the laying on of hands follow? What were the criteria that the congrega on sought in selec ng people to this ministry? What specific gi;s and abili es should a congrega on look for in selec ng someone to: • Senior Pastorate • Assis ng Pastorate • Youth Director • Music Director • Evangelism Director • Church Secretary Herman got up during the Voter’s Mee,ng to call a Pastor. Let’s just vote. All of these men have gone through seminary. It just boils down to who each of us likes best! Lesson 6: The Person God Calls 1. Above Reproach! As God has called on all His people to be holy, so especially has He called on His leaders to be something special, as well. We’re going to take a look at and compare two lists of quali%es that the Apostle Paul gave to congrega%ons selec%ng a pastor. What do you think? Compare 1 Timothy 3:1 -8 with Titus 1:5-9. We’re going to work first off the 1 Timothy list: Compare 1 Timothy 3:2 with Titus 1:5 What is the first characteris%c of a godly pastor for Timothy? for Titus? Does the pastor have to be perfect? Compare this with James 3:1. Who do you think will judge pastors more strictly? A. God B. His congrega%on C. The world ∗ ∗ Bob said, “It really bothers me. I saw Pastor there with his head down holding his eyes and crying. I just put down my Bible and let him have the sanctuary to himself.” Bob said, “It really bothers me. I saw Pastor there with his head down holding his eyes and crying. So I just paid my bar tab and let him have the counter to himself.” 1 Timothy 3:2 Why is the Pastor’s family an important part of his job? Is this one wife, or one wife at a %me? Rev. Denny’s wife was not a believer, plain and simple. She respected his work, a$ended church o%en, but she simply did not believe this Jesus stuff. 1 Timothy 3:11 tells something about the deacon’s wife. Why is it important that the spouse of a church leader should be able to hold their tongue? The Titus list links what other people with the pastor’s wife. Scan down and see if the Timothy list does as well. What is it about the pastor’s family that affects his ministry? Rev. Charles sons no longer went to church. Sure, they were smart. One went to Harvard and the other to Stanford, but at Christmas and Easter when they were home from school, they didn’t make the trip out the back door and across the lawn to the church. 2. A lot of plusses. verse 1 Timothy 3:2 Make a list of the next 9 posi%ve a9ributes. a ribute helpfulness Note this word in another transla%on. Why should the pastor not be given to excesses? What should he be excessive about? 1 Timothy 3:2 1 Timothy 3:2 1 Timothy 3:2 1 Timothy 3:2 Titus 1:8 Titus 1:8 Titus 1:8 This word has a meaning of “having life in its proper order.” Why should a church leader be a person who knows how to order the priori%es of his or her life. What can you tell about a pastor by being in his home? Why should a Director of Youth be able to teach? ... Director of Evangelism? What is good? Luke 18:19 This word means “just.” When is a pastor called on to be fair and discerning? Should a DCE be “holier than thou?” How can someone who is called on to do silly games with kids be holy? Titus 1:8 What is the rela%onship with what God expects of the Chris%an leader… and what God expects of the Chris an? ◊ The janitor was shocked when he arrived to find the Feds with a search warrant for the church computers. “Your pastor has been trafficking child pornography,” the officer said. ◊ Pastor Tom didn’t know what to do. His wife had gone into labor and it was Sunday morning. “Go to the hospital,” his elders told him, “we’ll do just fine here!” ◊ Youth Director Dan loved his 1967 Harley So%-tail. When people in the church complained about his obsession he said, “I’m supposed to love what is good, am I not?” ◊ Pastor Darwin was not the world’s best preacher. He didn’t tell a lot of stories and some:mes he lost his place. But as His people got to know him they saw how truly he did love Jesus - and it seemed like his preaching improved. Lesson 7: Qualifica ons for a church leader, part 2 1. Warning Signals. Paul tells Timothy to watch for certain warning signals in the church leader’s life. What “not” a ributes should the pastor not have? verse 1 Timothy 3:3 a ribute Problem Surely a pastor wouldn’t have a problem like this, would he? 1 Timothy 3:3 Can a pastor be violent without laying a hand on a parishioner? How? How did Jesus exemplify Ma hew 5:39? 1 Timothy 3:3 1 Timothy 3:3 How does this a tude “explain” the Gospel? The Greek word here denotes someone who is always striding into ba le. One transla on puts it :not a brawler.” Have you ever worked with a person like this? How did Jesus treat those who disagreed with him? The Pastor should be paid: A. The average wage of the congrega on. B. What any Master Degreed professional in town would. C. Enough to get by. Titus 1:7 Titus 1:7 The Greek term here means “self‐willed.” Does this mean that a pastor cannot have a dream or vision for his ministry. The Greek word here means “soon angry.” Should a church professional never show his or her anger? What would be an appropriate showing of anger? Pastor Oscar was so embarrassed. He knew that his congrega on knew about his drinking, but now he couldn’t stop himself. He felt 12 step programs were out of bounds for him, and taking me off to go to rehab was unthinkable. He didn’t know what to do ... except pour another drink. “Who do you think you are to tell me theology?” Pastor Mitch bellowed. And with that it was quiet. Pastor Mitch con nued the Bible study but no one made any more comments the rest of the hour. Pastor liked it that way. Hank really liked it at St. Ma hew’s. Here was a Pastor who had a dream, a vision. He was going to start a school, a high school, and a Bible college. Hank bought into the vision. He felt like God led him here. Can a pastor’s sin be forgiven? Why, why not? How about a DCE’s? 2. Prac ce What You Preach. Titus 1:9 gives and important quality for the leader. Why is this important? In the Lutheran Church‐Missouri Synod 95% of our pastors have an undergraduate degree and then must go to school 4 addi onal years before they are ordained. Teachers and DCEs have a strictly specified course load for 4 years. This limits the number of men and women entering the ranks of professional church workers. Wouldn’t it be be er to have more workers even if they weren’t trained as well? What are some of the topics that the pastor must be versed in in order to do ministry in the 1990’s? ... a DCE? Brother Robert was jealous. As he sipped coffee with the other pastors he said, “You guys how went through seminary are so blessed. My denomina on only made me go to two years of Bible College. I’d love to have the background that you have.” Paul gives Timothy a similar command in 1 Timothy 3:6. How long must a person be a Chris an before they are chosen as: Pastor Church leader Sunday School teacher Youth Group leader Why would conceit be a problem with a new convert? Why does conceit deny the Gospel? Ephesians 2:8,9 Lesson 8: Other Quali es for the Church Pro 1. Doctrine makes a difference. Si through 1 Timothy 4:1-11. What are some of the false teachings that came up in Timothy’s congrega on. Were these teachers “Chris ans” or just teachers of an a'rac ve pagan teaching Timothy’s people were facing? Can you think of anything in our day that is forbidden by some religious teachers and so places an unnecessary burden on the conscience? Cleo was alarmed. She had heard in the message that morning that birth control was wrong and that in macy between husbands and wives without the thought of conceiving a child was sinful. She feared for her soul, but she was more afraid to tell her husband. How should a DCE react when some doctrinal falsehood has crept into a home Bible Study? Isn’t there enough division in the church without spli3ng hairs over some minor doctrinal issue? What does training for godliness involve? 1 Timothy 4:8 It almost sounds like Paul is using an accepted creed of the faith in 1 Timothy 4:9-10. What values would creeds and statements of belief have when selec ng a called church worker? Edwin was nervous. When they moved to town he liked this church best and now the whole family was members. But when he started teaching in the Sunday School he’d asked the pastor for some doctrinal advice. “Oh, we just go with what everyone thinks.” Pastor replied. Then he gave Edwin a loose-leaf binder filled with documents from all over the place. 2. It’s the theology, dummy! Read 1 Timothy 4:12-16. What difference does age make when calling a pastor? ... a Youth Director? Be)y voted against calling the candidate the Call Commi)ee had selected for Youth Director. “He’s too old,” she complained, “my teenagers would never follow someone over 40. A0er all, they don’t listen to me!” A brief aside: Transla on does make a difference. Which paragraph does verse 11 belong to? Verse 9-10 or verses 12-14. Does it make a difference? Paul lists 5 areas in which the professional church worker should lead by example. 1 Timothy 4:12 Take a look at each. life area importance This Greek term not only includes the words you say, but the thought process behind them. What kind of thought process should a pastor employ? This Greek term refers to the daily back and forth between individuals. How could this involve more than just conversa on? Can anyone guess the Greek word here? What does it’s fullness mean? OK, the pastor should have faith, but how do you SEE IT? This refers to ordering ones private life. Why is it temp ng for the church worker to keep “something for himself?” The main job of any called church worker should be, according to 1 Timothy 4:13-14. Is this true of a Director of Music, as well? Patricia liked the new Youth Director’s Bible Studies; they were good. But this Director wasn’t as much fun as the last. They didn’t go to theme parks or have shaving cream fights anymore. “What’s a Youth Director for, anyway?” she mu)ered. What is at stake in the personal and theological integrity of the church staff? 1 Timothy 4:16 What is the greatest joy any called worker should have? Lesson 9:More Instruc ons to a Young Pastor 1. Where did you get that? Read through 2 Timothy 3:10‐17. Why is it important for Timothy to know about the life and struggles of Paul? What can we learn from those who have come before us? What can we do to make sure that our professional staff engage in the kinds of rela onships that bring them to maturity in their professional and spiritual development? Pastor Todd never went to any of those conferences. He never met with his fellow pastors. He was too busy. And, beside, what could they tell him? So he just worked away un l one day ... he quit. Note some of the be er known mentor ‐ disciple rela onships: Verse Mentor Disciple 1 Kings 19:19 1 Kings 18:7 Acts 15:39 Ma hew 17:1 O en people are impressed with preachers who come late to their faith and have a more “exci ng” history. What does Paul think of those who raised in the faith, according to 2 Timothy 3:14? Where does the confidence that the preacher/Chris an educator have come from? 2 Timothy 3:15 What does “God‐breathed” mean in 2 Timothy 3:16? Note the progression of teaching in 2 Timothy 3:16: What is meant by: rebuking correc ng training equipping Pastor Abe was a fire‐breather. He was against everything. Sit‐coms and liberals, make‐up for girls and tank‐tops for men. He could shoot from the hip on any given subject and always found his mark. 2. Do the Difficult. Con nue on with 2 Timothy 4:1‐5. What is the main charge that Paul gives to Timothy? Shouldn’t the preacher use good sense when he preaches? I mean, you can’t just go spou ng off everywhere, can you? Pastor Hans was driving home from a conference when he saw a bunch of men si ng under a tree taking a break. He stopped the car and went and asked them, “Would you mind if I preached to you.” “Sure, why not?” They replied. So he did. Why the solemnity of t2 Timothy 4:2? Why is it important to keep in mind that Jesus will come to judge all people when we preach? Name a few things that are unpopular to preach about today. Why should a pastor be “level‐headed?” Are all pastors evangelists? Should all pastors do the work of an evangelist? The kids loved DCE Diane. But her Youth Group at Trinity Church was just a holy clique. In her 10 year tenure not one teen ever came in from outside the church. She just didn’t see the need. Are all Chris ans evangelists? Should all Chris ans do the work of an evangelist? Then why don’t you? Lesson 10: Direc ves to Pastor Titus We have been looking at the qualifica ons and commands to a pastor or church leader. Paul was very specific about the rest of the folks in church, too. Let’s see. 1. Preaching Specifically. Paul was not re cent to give instruc ons on the specifics of preaching to young Pastor Titus. Let’s see whether we would let our pastor get away with these sermons. No ma'er what the applica on, what comes first according to Titus 2:1? ♦ Older Men. Read Titus 2:2. Why would it be a tempta on for older men to be “intemperate?” Guys? Should the younger genera on respect those who came before? Proverbs 23:22. Yet, what does this NOT give elders license for? Why is it important that faith and love go together? ♦ Older Women. Con nue on with Titus 2:3-4. Apparently Titus community was seeing several social problems among the elderly, especially women. What were they? What is at the root of the tempta on to gossip? Proverbs 26:20-28 Why is this against the Gospel of Jesus Christ? What would happen if our pastor preached against gossip? Is addic on a problem in our community? What happens when we treat the subject so delicately so as not to “embarrass” people? How might people in our community or our church have a problem with: 1. Alcohol 2. Prescrip on drugs 3. Marijuana Older women have a task according to Titus 2:4. What is it? I thought love was something you fall into or out of. Can you train someone to love their husband? What is the purpose of all this teaching? ♦ Young Men. Read on with Titus 2:6-8. Is self control the main challenge for young men? Why do you suppose this is? “Sober-minded” is used in Romans 12:3. Why is it that young men some mes consider themselves more highly than they should? How can a young man exhibit: ⇒ Integrity ⇒ Seriousness (can we have fun?) ⇒ Soundness of speech. So, if you are both young AND called to ministry, what challenges does this provide in the above areas? Servants. Con nue on with Titus 2:9-10. How does being a Chris an effect the workplace? Does it effect your workplace? Can a godly life make the teaching about God a'rac ve?
