2016 Annual Report
Community Active...
Community Strong
Dear Friends of JCL,
JCL is turning 35 next year and we are proud to say we are as committed
today to the men and women with developmental and intellectual
disabilities in our community as we were when JCL first began this
journey. Our mission and values continue to be at the core of JCL.
We are dedicated to seeing that the individuals we support are
encouraged and empowered to live their lives to their fullest
potential, experiencing all the benefits and opportunities any one
of us can access and enjoy.
We are thrilled to share just some of the stories from people in our
community whose lives have been touched by JCL. Each of the stories
helps illustrate JCL’s uniqueness.
You’ll read about JCL’s impact on Emily Forman through her eyes
and the eyes of her mother, Joanne. We love that Joanne calls JCL
“a family affair.”
Elliott Lerman also participates regularly in our Judaic programs
and other social activities. His parents Maxine and Manuel tell us,
“Without JCL, Elliott would not have the opportunity to maintain his
Jewish identity, which he cherishes, independently from his family.”
Through JCL, Elliott also gets a ride to and from work every day. These
are only a couple of the many ways JCL impacts lives. We hope you
enjoy this year’s report as much as we do.
We are getting pretty excited for our big 35th anniversary! We are in
the midst of planning the celebration for next fall, and we want our
community to celebrate with us. We know, without the continued
support from you, our donors, volunteers, clients and families, JCL
staff and the greater Hartford Jewish community, 35 years would not
have been attainable.
We are so grateful for you, your passion and support of JCL.

“My best friends are in
JCL and I have fun doing things with them.
I would miss out on a lot
of fun without JCL. I hope to have an apartment some day
with my friends at JCL.”
Friendship
“There is no question Emily’s life
has been enriched.
We simply can’t thank JCL enough
for including Emily in many of your
activities and functions. It warms my
heart to see her have a peer group
and social opportunities.
Emily Forman
Almost ALL of Emily’s social
opportunities come through her
involvement with the men
and women of JCL. Emily
participates in the Ladies
Dinner Club, Book Club,
parties, picnics, movies,
and weekend trips.
The staff is kind, well trained and
seems to genuinely care for
the unique individuals
that they serve.
All of the men and
women seem happy,
enriched, well cared
for and thriving. I
have witnessed them
cheering when Denis
[Geary] walks into a room—
a testament to how supported
and loved they feel.
I truly believe Emily
would be more isolated
and dependent on her
parents if not for JCL.
Emily feels safe and
comfortable with JCL. These
activities have helped her to grow
socially and emotionally. We feel very
blessed to be part of JCL.
Emily’s good friend Marianne moved
into her own apartment with support
from JCL about 8 years ago. Emily
visited and met the staff. The
relationship developed from there.
JCL is a highly professional, organized,
safe and person-centered organization.
3
It is without question a ‘family affair.’
This is what makes JCL unique from
other agencies.
JCL is a ‘gem’ and I hope in the
future other young adults, like my
daughter, will have the opportunity
to live in a JCL supported apartment
she lovingly can call ‘home.’“
Joanne Forman, Emily’s Mom
“JCL is loving, giving, kind,
a community built with
people of all abilities. JCL supports people so
they can live in a safe
environment and explore
who they are. OMG! If JCL were not in my life I would lose a sense of belonging.”
Rayna Seigelman
One Big Family
It’s a big community of people with
all kinds of challenges brought into
one community that is loving, caring,
kind… in tune with people’s needs.
“I was looking for a Jewish
organization I could feel at
home with. I feel a sense of
community and belonging with
JCL… a sense of ‘I’m here.’
I witness this. I am one of the family
and that is part of this beautiful
experience. JCL is part of my
journey through life.
I graduated from college in 2002,
moved to West Hartford in 2006,
and began attending JCL’s Special
Needs Shabbat Services led by
Ruth Anne Faust. I felt right
at home.
JCL is a big family, and I am
honored to be part of that family.
I couldn’t imagine my life
without JCL.”
I began participating in other
Judaic Programming activities,
including Seder, Hanukkah, and
Sukkot celebrations and
collaborative activities with
JTConnect and Beth El’s 7th
graders. I love going to
different events.
I love Bonnie [Eisenberg-Greene]
and Susan [Fried]. JCL is ‘family.’
4
“JCL provides Elliot with the opportunity to reinforce his Judaism,
and be part of the larger
Jewish community. Elliot associates JCL with almost a ‘home’ environment.”
Happy Prayers
When asked about Shabbat
Services, Elliot responded,
“Happy prayers; I like it.” “JCL is an integral part of Elliot’s
Jewish and social life.
by The Arc of the Farmington
Valley (Favarh), another
agency that helps people with
developmental disabilities. JCL is the only organization in the
area that helps adults with special
needs practice and reinforce their
Jewish heritage and live a Jewish life.
Hanukkah parties, Passover Seders
and other activities provide Elliot the
opportunity to maintain friendships
he has developed over the years.
Without JCL, Elliot would
not have the opportunity to
maintain his Jewish identity, which
he cherishes, independently from
his family. Elliot reads Hebrew
beautifully. He especially enjoys
Shabbat Services, easily following
along in the prayer book. He
would also not be able to work
in Manchester, and would
consequently have less contact
with his family.”
Elliot does not receive residential
services from JCL. However, JCL
transports Elliot to and from work
in Manchester on a daily basis. This
extra support allows Elliot to work
in his hometown, with people with
whom he is familiar.

Retirement at JCL
“I like the staff. I think it is a great
organization to be with. At JCL
everyone is helpful to me. I’ve
been with JCL for a long time.”
It’s nice to be out with Lloyd
because he treats me like a
family member. He is like a dad
to me.
You see, Pete is a “grease under
the fingernails” kind of guy. While
working many years at Goodwill
Industries— from where he is now
retired—Pete spent most of his
weekends helping out at a local
Mobil gas station. There he helped
the owner with various tasks,
proudly wearing his Mobil shirt.
I would like to tell you how great
an organization JCL is, how nice
it is and how they treat me.”
Today Pete is a participant of the
JCL Day Support Options (DSO)
program and a resident of JCL.
Three days a week, he spends
the day in the community with
Lloyd Johnson.
“If I did not have JCL,
I’d have to try to get things done alone.
Now I get transportation to where I need
to go. Without JCL
and Lloyd, I wouldn’t
be able to get out like
I do.”
Pete has always held a fascination
with 18-wheelers and trains. Two of
his favorite activities with Lloyd are
to visit truck stops or to hop a train
for a round-trip ride. It’s not about
the destination—it’s about the ride.
“We run errands, and go to the
mall, a truck stop, my parent’s
gravesite and the airport. It’s better
for me than sitting around all day. I
enjoy going out for my coffee.
Peter Goranson

With Our Gratitude
July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016
Our Donors
We at JCL want to reach out to you, our donors,
volunteers and families, to thank you for your
generosity and passion for JCL.
Without your support, we would be unable to provide individuals with
developmental disabilities with high quality programming and meaningful
community experiences. Payments from the State of Connecticut cover approximately
90% of the cost of our annual operations. Your gifts contribute to the remaining expenses
needed to continue the work we do on your behalf. We are deeply grateful for your
continued commitment to us.
Legacy Gifts
It’s easy to leave a Legacy Gift to JCL.
The simplest way to make a long-term commitment to JCL’s future is to name JCL as the
beneficiary of property, a bank account, a life insurance policy, or a retirement plan. We
encourage families and friends to consider including JCL in their estate planning. Contact
Denis Geary at 860-522-5225 ext. 2233 to learn more about legacy giving.
Endowment Gifts
Individuals and families just like you who are passionate about
our mission, have invested in JCL’s long-term future by creating
endowment funds. These funds were established through the Jewish Community
Foundation and specifically designated to support JCL’s programs — $23,245 was generated
this year by these funds.
