10 ways to be the Best Companion
s a high school student, and a human, relationships are a very important part of your life. But
what makes a relationship work well, and how do
you make your significant other happy to be with you?
There are ten foolproof methods for having the relationship of your life.
Communication- It’s not called a relationship for nothing. You need to be able to get along with the person you
love. If you want a relationship to last, in most cases, you
need to have some things in common with your girlfriend
or boyfriend. If you can’t agree on anything, and if you
don’t want to spend time together doing the same things,
there’s no point in the relationship. Relations can be as
insignificant as liking the same music. Then you can go to
concerts together! If you can’t find anything in common
with your girlfriend or boyfriend, look again, and if you
STILL can’t, well, maybe you should look somewhere
else!
Understanding- When two people are together, there
will undoubtedly be problems. Differences in opinion,
or beliefs, or decisions can cause big misunderstandings.
These happen in every relationship, so they don’t mean
there is something wrong with the relationship. They are
fixable. It is important though, in this situation, to understand each other.
You have to ask yourself, “What is the problem, why is
ben LeTaw

their opinion different from mine, what is my problem
with it, are they wrong?” Admitting to yourself that you
could be the problem is important. If you just act like
you’re perfect, nothing will ever get fixed. When there
is a problem, you should always be calm and try to use
reason to solve it, not hormones.
Fun- This may seem obvious, but for some people it
isn’t. Having fun is extremely important. Hanging out can
be fun, but when you do it all the time, it can get kind
of boring. When this happens you tend to say to yourself, “I’m bored, so I should find someone more interesting.” This might be true, but chances are you just haven’t
tapped the full potential of your girlfriend or boyfriend. If
you’re bored of just “hanging out,” try doing something
interesting, go out to a movie, go for a walk in the park,
go out to eat, plan a trip. Just keep it moving, keep it interesting, and keep it fun. This brings me to my next point.
Be cute for your girlfriend- Right now you’re saying to
yourself, “I’m not going to intentionally let my girlfriend
‘whip’ me.” Well, trust me, for the effort it takes to do
cute things for your girlfriend, there is a major pay-off.
You don’t have to act stupid or write love notes, just be
nice, and act comfortable. Open doors for your girlfriend,
carry her things for her sometimes, pull out her chair.
There are so many little things you can do that she will
love and remember. There is nothing wrong with being
a gentleman. One thing that girls love is when their boyfriend knows what their favorite things are, as well as the
things they want to do, and don’t want to do. Consider
your girlfriend, and put some time into thinking about
what she wants, not just what you want.
Dress up for your boyfriend- Not to stereotype, but
generally boys are about physical sensation. They want to
see that you care about them. Talking isn’t always effective when you’re dealing with boys. The best way to grab
a boy’s attention is to dress up or do something that they
can see. A boy will notice new perfume or nice clothing.
When he sees that you’ve gone the extra mile for him,
chances are he’ll be grateful and very happy.
You don’t have to dress up to make your boyfriend happy though. The way you act is important. This goes for
boys too. You should show interest in the person. People
value attention immensely. Tell them that they look good
or that they smell nice. This can be as simple as how you
act around them. Giving someone a hug or rubbing their
back is a small but very noticeable way to make them
happy.
Look for the next five tips in the next issue of the Billie
Bulletin. For now, remember, pay attention to your girlfriend or boyfriend, it will show them you care.

Grade

What if you were in charge of several dozen middle
school students, but along with giving them a good
education you had to help them adjust to a completely new environment. Wouldn’t that be a challenge?
That’s what our 7th grade teachers Russell Hunt,
Beth McCool, Inga Perham and substitute Pam Ball,
do everyday. The have to help about 70 kids make the
adjustment from elementary school to high school.
With such a transition comes the good and bad.
7th graders are seeing both benefits and drawbacks.
“They have more room, get to meet more electives
and get to meet more teachers,” said Ball. But she
isn’t the only one who sees benefits. McCool and
Perham also see some advantages.
“They have a longer day with more time for academics” says Perham. She also says smaller class
sizes are a benefit. McCool said the students benefit
from good role models and tutors. She also says being part of a bigger community is an advantage.
But the teachers also agree that the 7th graders at the
high school aren’t different from the 7th graders that
went to school at the middle school. Perham says a
7th grader is a 7th grader no matter where you go. “I
can spot a 7th grader from a mile
away” she laughs.
Teachers help the students adjust to the high school
by “showing them around and being more
tolerant to things going wrong like not getting lockers open” says McCool. “We tried to have a schedule that doesn’t bounce students around to much. We
tried to keep them in the same group for the morning
academic classes. This should make it an easier adjustment for 7th graders” says Perham.
The switch from middle to high school isn’t all
positive though. Perham says “It might make them
grow up faster and that’s a huge disadvantage.” She
also says “Sometimes we push them to grow up too
fast. Hopefully being in a 7-12 configuration won’t
cause students to grow up too fast, you are only a
kid once.”
McCool noticed sometimes the 7th graders can feel
left out. “At times students feel left out when they
hear announcements for ‘all students’ but they don’t
apply to them. One student said ‘they’re just teasing
us”. McCool added “ They might feel left out because they were at the top and now they’re at the
bottom,” Ball said “Teachers are really trying to keep
thing consistent”. “ They sometimes get
shuffled in with the high school” She also notices
challenges the 7th graders face like dealing with
lockers and passing between classes.
One thing the teachers agree on, they don’t do or
teach things differently being at the high school. The
transition seems to have its ups and downs but the in
end the 7th graders seem to like the high school.

High School: South Eugene High
School, home of the Axemen.
Birthplace: Eugene, Oregon.
Family: Grew up with my older sister, mom, and dad. My parents still
live in the area. I am currently married with two daughters, Sophia (5)
and Chloe (2).
Grades: I was kind of a knucklehead up until second term my junior
year. Then I kind of figured it out. It
helps to read before coming to class.
It helps to do homework at home
instead of five minutes before class.
I think I just matured. Senior year I
started getting better grades. I got an
“A” in choir. My cumulative GPA
was maybe a 3.0.
Favorite Classes: I liked choir. I
think I did a good job in science.
Least Favorite Classes: Math was
tough for me. Especially when the
numbers turned into letters, and simplifying, what is that?
Hobbies/ School Activities: I played tennis, still do. I
played guitar, and squash, did that once. I wasn’t up to
anything good. I fly fish. I used to be a guide up in Alaska.
I guided George Strait, the CEO of Pepsi, and the CEO
of Honeywell.
Proudest High School Moment: I think my proudest
moment would be my senior year. I finally pulled things
together. I got good grades, in academic classes–not just
choir and I earned teachers respect.
Most Embarrassing High School Moment: On prom
night this girl was walking to the limo with a big prom
dress and a bird swooped in and pooped on it. It didn’t
happen to me but I saw it. I do so many embarrassing
things I can’t pick just one.
Advice to Current High School Students: Pick your
friends wisely.
High School Relationships: I had a couple girlfriends. I was an idiot. I
didn’t know how to talk to
girls or what to do, I was nervous.
Social Status: I was a troublemaker, maybe the class clown.
Out of all the Pleasant Hill Students, Who is most like you?:
Shane Brooks or Zach Denton. I
think that’s right.
College: I went to the University of Oregon and the Colorado
College in Colorado Springs.
How was college? Any memories?: It was wild and lots of fun.
I took a Crime and Punishment
class and we visited a maximumsecurity prison in Colorado. It
was really interesting and kind of
scary. It was scary clean. I took
a lot of Spanish classes and going to Mexico for a semester was
fun. I went to Oaxaca in Southern Mexico. It was colonial with
cobblestone streets and had a
high number of indigenous populations. There was great food, cool families, and I was
like only blonde kid out of like 2,000.
Did you end up where you planned as a child?: I don’t
think I knew what I wanted to be. I am a teacher. It’s a
good job. I like having summers off and I like Spanish.
How did you end up at Pleasant Hill?: The job came up, I
was ready to move, it was really a rush. I had heard really
good things about Pleasant Hill and I liked the idea of a
small school district and knowing everyone.
What do you like most about your job?: Watching cool
kids grow up.
If you were a superhero, what would your superpower
be?: Time travel.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would
you go?: Somewhere warm in South America.
What are your pet peeves?: When people lie or are deceptive. I don’t like students
that like to argue and don’t
respect my authority.
“I had heard really good things
about Pleasant Hill and I liked
the idea of a small school district
and knowing everyone.”
