Welcome to Beginning Band at Saeger Middle School! You are in for a very exciting year.
Band is a wonderful opportunity for students to be creative, work as a team, and grow as
individuals. We are looking forward to working with your student next year.
Purchasing/Renting Instruments
The following information will guide you through the purchase or renting of your student’s
instrument. The quality of the instrument is VERY IMPORTANT. Please follow these
guidelines when renting or purchasing an instrument. If you have any questions, do not
hesitate to contact us.
One of the best options for a beginning band member is a RENT-TO-OWN program. Ensure
that the program is with a reputable Music Dealer or Music Store. A rent-to-own program
allows you to rent an instrument on a monthly basis, while some of the rent is applied towards
owning the instrument or the purchase of a future instrument.
You may also want to purchase your child’s instrument. PLEASE AVOID purchasing
instruments from department stores or wholesale dealers. While these instruments are often
cheaper, they are also of lesser quality and are often difficult to repair. As stated above, the
best way to ensure your student is getting a quality instrument is to deal with a reputable music
store or music dealer.

Students will start on the bell kit alone, and MUST learn to play the bells before moving on to other
percussion instruments. It is preferred that percussion students be enrolled in percussion lessons (that
include work on the bells/mallet instruments). If you are interested in starting private lessons for your
student, please contact me for instructor information!

recommendations based on our experience, equipment quality, and age appropriateness. Like many
other products on the market, sizes, strengths, and quality are not necessarily equal from one brand or
