Mental Wellbeing at University
Not yourself?
Talking through your concerns can help you to
find new options and different perspectives.
Why would I go to counselling?
What is counselling about?
Counsellors supporting students are fully
qualified and experienced in a wide range of issues.
Your counsellor will support you to cope with
whatever issues are causing you distress and
disrupting your life.
Counselling will help you to identify the
resources, strengths, qualities and skills that you
have to achieve your goals to find your own
unique solutions.
They have a sensitive and practical approach,
no matter what difficulties you may be
going through:
• Academic concerns
• Family problems
• Alcohol or drug problems
• Fear of failure
• Anxiety
• Feeling out of control
• Bereavement
• Feeling lonely or isolated
• Bullying and harassment
• General help & advice
• Compulsive behaviour
• Pregnancy worries
• Crisis Support
• Relationship difficulties
• Debt concerns
• Sexual issues
• Depression
• Eating disorders
• Exam stress
Counselling is carried out in a supportive,
caring and non-judgemental way.
You will be gently challenged to face your problems,
to set goals on how to achieve solutions to your
problems and actively work towards those goals.
Counselling will help you to identify the resources,
strengths, qualities and skills that you have to achieve
your goals to find your own unique solutions.
Counselling sessions usually last 50 minutes, and can
be arranged to fit your schedule. Some students
attend one session, others attend more - in general
students are offered up to 6 sessions. Your counsellor
will discuss your options with you, and help you to
access other types of support.
