Water – Taking Action

Water Conservation
Taking Action
Here are some great ways you
can save water at both school
and home. You will need the
following equipment:
- Lots of plastic bottles
- Stones
- Cups
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Stop watch
Toilet
- Use the half flush button if available.
- Old toilets use over double the
water of new toilets. Place a milk
bottle with stones in it in the toilet
tank of old toilets. This will lower
the amount of water your toilet uses
each time it flushes.
Old toilets - 13.6 liters per flush
New Toilets - 6 liters per flush
Brushing your Teeth
- Always turn the tap off when
brushing your teeth, you only need
to turn it on when rinsing your
toothbrush once you are done.
To see how much water this wastes
get your friend to collect the water in
cups while you brush your teeth and
the tap is left on. How many cups did
they manage to fill?

Shower
- Showers use a lot less water than
baths.
- Use a timer when you take a shower
to ensure you don’t waste too much
water. Under 5 minutes is best.
The average shower head pumps out
19 liters of water per minute. How
many litres of water would it use in 10
minutes compared with 5?
Fixing Leaks
- A small leak from a tap, hose
or toilet can waste hundreds or
thousands of litres of water per year.
Go around your home or school and
check no taps, pipes, hoses or toilets
are leaking. If you find a leak tell an
adult it needs to be fixed. Until it is
fixed place a bucket or cup under the
leak to catch that water if possible.
Use it for watering the garden.
Watering the Garden
- Watering your garden can waste a
lot of water.
Water the garden early in the morning
or late in the afternoon as in the
middle of the day a lot of the water
will be evaporated by the sun.
Use a watering can instead of the
hose as it uses less water. How could
you measure the difference?
