Bethany and Dad Steve enjoying some art therapy.
Bethany’s story
Bethany is five years old and receives care
from East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH)
Quidenham. Her family are also supported by
the service and receive six night stays a year
as well as 12 hours per month care at home.
When Bethany visits Quidenham, she enjoys
taking part in the art therapy sessions. Last
year her artwork ‘Hands Up!’ was used as
the image on the hospice’s Christmas card,
raising funds for EACH.
Parents, Caroline and Steve said: “We were
extremely proud when we learned that
Bethany’s artwork had been chosen for the
EACH Christmas card. We were all very
excited about it and they looked fabulous.
“We can’t put into words how much of a
difference EACH makes to our family. The
team there are absolutely fantastic and are
like an extension to our own family. The team
have included Bethany in so many different
events and activities
since we have
received support
and her confidence
and independence
has grown. As a
family we’re really
made to feel special
and love our time
spent at Quidenham
and the activities
Bethany's winning
and events we’re
artwork featured on
invited to.”

About Together for Short Lives
Together for Short Lives is the leading
charity working across the UK to help
ensure that every child and young person
unlikely to reach adulthood, and their family,
get the best possible care and support
whenever and wherever they need it. As part
of our work we raise money for all children’s
hospice services across the UK.
Children’s hospice services are dedicated to
improving the quality of life for children with a
Craft-tea party pack
“These services are so beneficial to us all
as the time spent at the hospice as a family
enables Bethany and her sisters to have
fun together with the amazing team. They
do all sorts of things from making frozen
castles, painting, arts and crafts to treasure
hunts and lots more. Specialist play and
art therapies are very important to Bethany
as they help her express herself and her
sisters love getting involved too. It allows
us as parents some quiet time to relax and
also spend time together as a family with
activities we can all do together.

life-limiting or life-threatening condition. They
provide flexible, practical and free support at
home and in the hospice for the entire family,
from the moment of diagnosis, and for as
long as is needed.
Art and play is an important part of what
children’s hospices do. Every children’s hospice
has a dedicated area where children and
their siblings can enjoy art and craft therapy
and express their feelings through creativity.

How to host a
party
great
When’s best?
Craft-tea will launch in Children’s Hospice
Week (11-17 May). You can host your
Craft-tea party whenever works best for
you. Invite your friends round for crafts and
cupcakes; take over the kitchen at work
for a lunchtime ‘knit and natter’; or hold
an arts and crafts session for children.
Hobbycraft stores will be hosting their own
Craft-tea events on Saturday 16 May.
Shout about it
Download our party invitations and poster

neighbours and colleagues. The more
the merrier and the more funds you will
raise for children’s hospice services.
Cookie jars
These are a great option for fundraising
and are so easy to make. Simply collect old
glass jars and layer up all the ingredients for
delicious cookies (Visit Hobbycraft’s blog
for a How To Guide: blog.hobbycraft.co.uk/
cookie-mix-jar). Add a label to make them
look pretty and ask for a donation for each
one. Guests can take them home and make
delicious cookies after the event.

Take away treats
Everyone loves cakes, and sometimes
just one piece isn’t enough! Why not
have some paper bags or cake boxes
handy so guests can make a donation
and take away a treat to enjoy later.
Helping hand
Ask friends, family and colleagues to
help make cakes, set up craft stations
and lend a helping hand!
Careful does it
Don’t forget to read the Food Standards
Agency’s tips on how to stay safe and
hygienic in the kitchen. food.gov.uk
Fabulous fundraising
Let them eat cake!
Everyone enjoys a slice of cake or a savoury
treat, and people are always happy to make
a donation for something yummy.

Recipe cards
Are you happy to share the recipe of your
famous flapjacks? Why not design recipe
cards and ask people to make a donation
for each one.
Here’s one I made earlier!
Why not ask your guests to pay to take part
in a craft session. Set up everything they
need, make an example and let them get
creative.
Going for gold
Place a gold label under one of your cookies;
whoever picks that treat will win a prize!

Turn the oven down to 180°C (fan). Slice
the sausages and drain the excess liquid
from the tomatoes
Cover the pastry with foil, and fill with
baking beans or dry rice, and pop in

Once the base is ready, fill with the

Once finished, trim off any leftover pastry

• Thin jewellery wire

tissue paper until the whole of the
sheet has been folded
Round the ends by trimming the
tissue paper with scissors
Cut a 40cm length of jewellery wire.
Securely wrap and tie this around the
centre of the folded tissue paper
Start separating the individual layers
of tissue paper from the centre, making
sure to separate an equal amount of
tissue paper to both the front and back
of the pom (if you separate all of the
sheets to the front of the pom you will
end up with a flat back)
Once you have separated all of the sheets
of tissue paper find the ends of the length
of wire used in step 5 and hang in place.
