Round character  
Characters are described as bring round or flat.

Round Characters:
o Well-developed
o Has many traits, both good and bad
o Not easily defined because we know many details about the
character
o Realistic and life-like
o Most major characters are round
 “The test of a round character is whether it is capable of
surprising in a convincing way. If it never surprises, it is flat.” –E.
M. Forster
o Think of three round characters from books you have read. Include
at least one from the book we are reading as a class.





o Sometimes stereotyped
o Most minor characters are flat.

Dynamic 
Characters are described as being dynamic or static.

Dynamic
Characters:
o Undergoes an important change in personality in the story
o Comes to some sort of realization that permanently changes the
character
o A change occurs within the character because of the events of the
story
o The protagonist is usually dynamic, but not always.
o Think of three dynamic characters from books you have read.
Include at least one from the book we are reading as a class.





o Although something may happen to the character, it does not
cause the character to change.
o Minor characters are usually static.
