Welcome
In 2016 the Winchester Festival
begins in fine style with Brahms’
German Requiem in the fittingly grand
surroundings of Winchester Cathedral.
This opening concert heralds nine days
of music, talks and drama throughout
the city, including Fauré’s exquisite
Requiem, Michael Morpurgo on the inspiration behind his stories, a staged
reading of Venus and Adonis in the 400th anniversary year of Shakespeare’s
death, history from world-renowned Antony Beevor and Professor Alice
Roberts, a cappella singing from award-winning choir Sansara, national
treasure Sandi Toksvig in conversation with John Lloyd, Red Priest’s
breathtaking interpretation of baroque repertoire, Robert Hardy on stage
as Sir Winston Churchill and a gloriously colourful closing performance of
Britten’s community opera Noye’s Fludde.
As in every year we are hugely indebted to the many people who make
the Festival possible. In particular, we extend enormous gratitude to the
Festival’s sponsors and donors – both those who are new to the Festival
this year and those who have been our partners for many years – and to the
individual patrons. We are especially grateful to Godwins Solicitors, whom
we are delighted to welcome as the Festival’s new Principal Sponsor, to
The Friends of Music in Winchester and Rathbone Investment Management
for their longstanding commitment, to the The Roger and Ingrid Pilkington
Charitable Trust for their very generous support this year, to all of our event
and festival sponsors and to our sterling individual patrons who are the
backbone of the Festival. We would also like to give special thanks to the
trustees who work with us throughout the year on so many aspects that
make the Festival possible.
We look forward to welcoming you to the 2016 Winchester Festival in July.

ANTONY BEEVOR
Ardennes 1944
Bestselling author Antony Beevor casts
his critical eye on Hitler’s ‘last gamble’, the
attack he launched on 16th December 1944
in the snow-covered forests and gorges of
the Ardennes. The allies, taken by surprise,
found themselves fighting two panzer armies.
The Ardennes – involving more than a million
men – would prove to be the battle which finally broke the
back of the Wehrmacht. Antony Beevor’s books, including
Stalingrad and The Fall of Berlin 1945, have been translated
into 30 languages, received numerous awards and sold
more than seven million copies.

traditional folk with classical elements. Lyrically
they combine their own experiences and
inspirations, informed by musical travels around
the globe and their upbringings in Orkney and
the Scottish Borders.

Julian Macey conductor
Always a popular event in the Festival,
the Ashton Singers present a wide range of choral music, sacred and

tale of an unfaithful wife and lover -The Ballad of Lady Barnard and
Little Musgrave - and Grainger’s intense sea shanty Shallow Brown.
Amongst the sacred music will be the ravishing Quatre petites prières de
Saint François d’Assise by Poulenc and music by Jonathan Dove and
Arvo Pärt. The Master’s Garden will be open to the audience before the
concert and in the interval, when drinks will be served.

productivity and innovation mean fundamental problems are not being
addressed. He is also the first minister to lift the lid on the coalition. Tickets : £14 Sponsored by

Baroque music revelled in the
extravagant: it was not hidebound by
strict divisions between high art and
street music, often resulting in a wild and

they perform, adding in elements of improvisation to help bring the spirit
of the 18th to a 21st century audience. The programme includes music
by Vivaldi, Handel and Albinoni, as well as by some less well-known
composers such as Castello, Biber and Pancrace Royer.
