Getting Started
High School Students
For the most current information on course scheduling
options, students are encouraged to log onto
www.hccc.edu/schedule
APPLYING FOR ADMISSION
Students may apply as either matriculating (degree-seeking) or
non-matriculating (non-degree seeking) students. An Admissions application is enclosed in this publication, or apply online by logging onto
www.hccc.edu/apply
The High School Special Admissions Program offers high school
juniors and seniors the opportunity to enroll at HCCC in credit courses,
when recommended by the student’s parents, guidance counselor,
principal, and approved by HCCC. Students may enroll for a maximum
of two courses each semester. All students are required to take the
College Placement Test, and HCCC reserves the right to place students
according to their test scores.
For further information, please review with www.hccc.edu/leap
or contact LEAP Office (201) 360-5331
The application form will NOT be processed until it is complete;
send the completed application with a non-refundable $25.00
application fee, made payable to Hudson County Community
College, in the form of a personal check, money order, or credit card.
All documentation must be sent to the Office of Enrollment Services,
70 Sip Avenue, Jersey City, NJ 07306. The application will not be considered complete without all necessary documents and fees.
For more information please visit www.hccc.edu/admissions.
BEFORE REGISTERING FOR COURSES,
A STUDENT MUST:
Take the College Placement Test (CPT), or meet exemption criteria as
stated on www.hccc.edu/testing.
Also see Transfer and Visiting Students.
International Students
Transfer Students
Transfer students must provide an official transcript to have credit
applied towards their chosen program. Depending on the time
available, an unofficial transcript may be accepted for preliminary
purposes, namely to ensure a student has met prerequisite requirements and to determine if they may be exempt from having to take
the HCCC College Placement Test (CPT).
Students that are permitted to register using an unofficial transcript
must have their official transcript evaluated prior to being permitted
to register for the following semester. It is recommended that students
attempt to obtain an official transcript in a sealed and unopened envelope, and present the official transcript at time of application to HCCC.
For more information please visit: www.hccc.edu/transfer
Foreign persons interested in obtaining a Form I-20 from HCCC must
submit additional information as required by the US Student Exchange
and Visitor Program (SEVP). Visa processing times currently range from
1-3 months; therefore, we have established the following deadlines:
Visiting Students
DEADLINE FOR STUDENTS FILING FOR F-1 VISA STATUS:
FALL
Students outside the U.S. First business day in June
SEMESTER F-1 Transfer students only First business day in July
SPRING
Students outside the U.S. First business day in October
SEMESTER F-1 Transfer students only First business day in November
Please contact [email protected] for specific admissions
requirements or visit www.hccc.edu/internationalstudents for more
information. If you do not supply all requested information by the
deadline dates, we may not have sufficient time to process your
Form I-20 for you to take to the U.S. Embassy/Consulate. Upon
successful completion of all the admissions requirements, you will
receive a letter of acceptance, your Form I-20, and information about
your registering for classes.
Visiting students from other institutions, seeking to enroll short-term,
are permitted to enroll as Non-Matriculating students. In most instances
visiting students should provide a “Permission Letter” from their home
institution stipulating the course offered at HCCC that they are allowing
the student to take. With such a document the need for a transcript is
not necessary.
The process above ensures that the home institution will accept the
credits from HCCC, thereby providing an element of academic security
to the student. Many home institutions may not accept the credit, as a
result of the students not seeking such permission, or a leave of
absence if matriculated.
Visiting Students who are unable to obtain a “Permission Letter”
should follow the procedures for Transfer Students.

on admissions, degree programs and schedules.
Off-Campus
Academic Centers
To serve the needs of Hudson County residents, the Office of
Evening, Weekend and Off-Site Programs (EWOS) at Hudson County
Community College (HCCC) has established conveniently located
satellite academic centers throughout the county. Off-Site classes
provide access to college and continuing education courses on weekends and evenings on campus, in convenient off-campus locations
and in community high schools (Kearny High School, Bayonne High
School, Union City High School and others). College credit courses at
the high schools are open to HCCC full and part-time students, as
well as high school students, and vary from semester to semester,
but normally each center offers a variety of general education and
degree program courses.
See page 9 for more information.
Non-native speakers who want to learn the English language must also
take the English as a Second Language placement test. Students may
be exempt from the College Placement Test. For a listing of exemption
criteria and testing information including testing schedule,

Learning Communities
At HCCC, students can enroll in specially selected and connected
classes called Learning Communities (LC). The same group of
students take the courses in each community; this gives them many
opportunities to get to know each other, work together, and learn from
each other. In a Learning Community, faculty work together with
counselors and peer mentors to create an informal, interactive, and
supportive atmosphere. Fieldtrips, special events, and special projects
are integrated to enhance the students’ learning experience.
Learning Communities are available for day and evening students; college level students; English as a Second Language (ESL) students; and
Academic Foundations students.

Financial Aid
The Add / Drop period begins after classes have started. The Add/
Drop period permits students to make changes to their schedule
without having to officially withdraw (earning a grade of W). During the
Add/Drop period, students may only register for a class if it has not met
or has met once. Classes that are held over several hours contiguously
may be restricted.
To officially withdraw from classes, a student must follow the College’s
withdrawal procedure, as outlined in the College catalog. Non-attendance of classes, whether by choice or inability, does not constitute
withdrawal; therefore, every student must submit an add/drop form,
signed by an advisor, to receive the appropriate tuition adjustment.
Official withdrawal forms must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office.
The add/drop fee is $15.00 per occurrence. Financial aid recipients
should note that withdrawing from classes might affect their financial
aid award.
All students should read the College catalog for a full explanation
of the College’s withdrawal policy.
The College Refund Policy for 100% refund is determined
Students expecting to use their financial aid to help pay for their tuition
and fees should file the financial aid form at least three months prior to
registration to ensure a timely response, from both the federal and
state agencies. HCCC cannot guarantee such a response to a student’s
application after that time.
by the date of the first day of classes for each semester.

HCCC provides students with an alternative to traditional on-campus
courses in the form of online and hybrid courses. Online and hybrid
courses are offered throughout the academic year in accelerated 7-week
sessions and traditional 15-week sessions. The tuition and fees for a
course are the same for online or in-person classes, and financial aid is
available. In online courses, designated as sections ONA, ONB, or ONR
in the catalog, instruction takes place entirely on the internet (via Hudson
Online) and no face-to-face classroom instruction is required. In hybrid
courses, designated as sections HYA, HYB, or HYR in the catalog, there
is a combination of required face-to-face time in a classroom or laboratory with at least 50% online instruction. Hudson Online courses count
toward your degree, are equivalent to on-campus courses and are taught
by HCCC faculty. The College does not currently offer fully online associate degrees or certificate programs; however, up to half of the credits
for your HCCC degree can be fulfilled by online courses, and there is no
limit to the number of hybrid courses. Students who are taking Hudson
Online courses are well supported for success, including around-theclock technical assistance and online tutorial services.
