Approach
This guide describes how a student, Nick Johnson, sets about using Myshowcase and its functionality
to achieve his life goals. It illustrates how he makes use of Myshowcase through his years at
University.
Introducing Nick Johnson, BA Marketing
Management Student
Nick’s story
Nick is currently in the final year of his Marketing Management course at a
university in the North West of England. He recently completed a placement
in a social media marketing agency. During the placement, he picked up some
great experiences promoting apps and consumer-targeted websites. This has focussed Nick’s
ambitions, and when he graduates, he plans to get a job in a creative digital business.
What Nick wants to get out of using Myshowcase
Nick is looking for his dream job in the creative industries. He has several employers in his sights,
all based in the arts district of the city where he studied. Nick will create targeted showcases to
demonstrate the business skills that he developed while studying and while on placement.
Nick is ambitious and has already started looking at what he needs to do to charter as a marketer.
He is mapping and tracking his evidence against the CIM standards.
Benefits for Nick
A lot of the work that Nick has done has been on multimedia, web-based projects. To get the most
out of his evidence, his CV needs to be online and interactive. He doesn’t have too many coding
skills, but Myshowcase makes it easy for him to get his evidence online.

Getting Started - Items
3.1 Adding Items
Upon first entering your Myshowcase space it can appear very bare. This can quickly change by
getting busy gathering and collecting your stuff together in one place, within Myshowcase.
Nick has been adding items to his Myshowcase space during his time at university. These vary from
events in his personal life to his academic success and his time on placement. In a short time his
Myshowcase account transforms and begins to feel richer and more representative of the person he
is, his achievements, his experiences, his interests.
5
To add an item, Nick simply selects the “add a new item” button in the centre of the page.
He is then presented with a list of sources from which he can pull digital items into his Myshowcase
space. To begin with, Nick selects the Vimeo icon as he would like to include the video marketing
essay he has recently completed.
The Vimeo create item area opens up for Nick to complete.
6
Nick gives the item a name and a small description of what it is. He copies in the required Vimeo
link for his essay. Finally he selects the green “Create Item” button in the bottom right hand
corner.
This returns Nick back to his “My Stuff” area. The Vimeo item he has just collected now appears as
the first item in his Myshowcase space.
7
Over time, Nick is able to identify lots of other items, other stuff he would like to collect together
in Myshowcase. This includes video and images of his band “Rock Pilots”, certificates and reminders
of his Duke of Edinburgh success, awards for local community service support and various course
materials he has accumulated over the three years completing his BA.
3.2 Editing items
At any time Nick can edit his items. When a mouse is held over any item in the “My Stuff” area the
item presents a menu of actions Nick can perform on that item. One of which is editing it.
Selecting the “Edit this item” option, displays al the detail about the item. From here, Nick can
amend the name and description of the item. In addition he can add a “Tag” to the item or map
the item against one or more of the frameworks he has activated.
8
9
3.3 Discarding items
At any time Nick can remove an item from his “My Stuff” area by selecting the “Discard this item”
from the action menu exposed by the item when you hover a mouse over it.
3.4 Preview items
At any time Nick can preview an item from his “My Stuff” area by selecting the “Preview this item”
from the action menu exposed by the item when you hover a mouse over it.
Selecting this action will open up the item within a preview box so Nick can review its contents.
10
3.5 Searching, ordering and organising items
Nick is able to make use of the search and ordering functionality to quickly find specific items he
has collected. The word search matches against the title of each item. As illustrated below, Nick
can item five items with the word “Final” in the title.
In addition, he can order his items by date added, item type or alphabetically by title.
Nick can organise all the items he has with the use of tags. Against each item he can add one or
more tags. This allows him to quickly locate items contained within hiss “My Stuff” area. For
example, this is how Nick organised all the items associated to his efforts on the Duke of Edinburg
Award scheme.
First, he identifies each of the individual items (his google map, the award certificate, video and
photos) and edits each one. The edit allows Nick to add or remove tags associated with an item.
For each of these items he adds the tag “Duke-of-Edinburgh”.
Once all the items have been tagged Nick can use the “Browse your stuff” functionality to search
for tagged items.
11
The “Browse you stuff” functionality displays all the tags Nick has used and the number of items
that have that tag. Nick can see he has eight items tagged “Duke-of-Edinburgh”. When Nick clicks
on that tag, he can see all the items that have been tagged this way.

Frameworks
4.1 Activating Frameworks
Nick is able review what frameworks are available to him within his personal settings area. From
here, he is able to activate any of his available frameworks and begin mapping items or evidence
against them. All his activated frameworks are listed on the left while all his available frameworks
are listed on the right. Nick can add an available framework to his activated list. He can remove an
activated framework and replace it back in his available list.
Nick has chosen to work with two frameworks: “Professional Marketing Standards” and “Early
Career Professional: Skills Development Framework”.
Nick can see his activated frameworks on the “My Stuff” display. Once he selects the “Browse your
stuff” button, a drop down list of all his activated frameworks becomes visible. By choosing one of
the frameworks he can see how many and which items have been mapped against it. In the
example above, Nick has mapped five of his items against the “Collaboration” competence of the
“Early Career Professional: Skills Development Framework”.
13
4.2 Mapping Items to Frameworks
At any time Nick can map any of his items within his “My Stuff” area against any of his activated
frameworks. For example, Nick has chosen to map an item (“Duke of Edinburgh Location”) against
the activated “Early Career Professionals” framework. He must first choose to “Edit this item”.
Once the item is in edit mode, Nick simply selects the appropriate framework from the frameworks
drop down list. He then, simply clicks on the framework element he wants to map this item to and
then clicks the green “Save Changes” button in the bottom right hand corner. The item can be
added to multiple elements within the same framework or to different elements spread across
different frameworks.

5
Showcasing
5.1 Creating a showcase
Nick is able to use the items he has collected together within Myshowcase to construct showcases.
A showcase displays Nick’s items in different layouts and styles. Nick can then invite people to view
them. At the end of his university years, Nick decides to build a CV showcase to suport his
employment search.
To create a showcase Nick simply clicks the “Create a new showcase” button.
Nick is presented with an input screen asking for a name of his showcase and a small description of
what it is. He names it “Nick Johnson Curriculum Vitae”.
15
5.2 Adding items to a showcase
Adding items into a showcase is carried out from within his “My Stuff” area. Nick firstly selects the
showcase he would like to work with. For example, Nick selects his showcase named “Nick Johnson
Curriculum Vitae”.
Once selected, adding and removing items into the showcase is straight forward. He identifies
which items he wants to include on his CV, hovers the mouse over the item, and clicks the “Add to
showcase” option.
When the item is added to the showcase, a blue tick appears in the top right hand corner of the
item. The item count displayed alongside the showcase name also increments by one. To remove an
item from his showcase, again he hover’s the mouse over an item already included within the
showcase and then clicks the “remove from showcase” option.
16
5.3 Customising a showcase
Nick can customise his showcase at any point. He can change the name and description of the
showcase. He also has a collection of showcase theme templates that can be used. The contents of
the showcase do not change. They are simply presented in a different layout and style. For
example, Nick could take his showcase “Nick Johnson Curriculum Vitae” which has a layout of “CVResume 1” and display the content in a “Book” layout. Changes are only applied when the “Save
Changes” button is clicked.
Once saved, the showcase can be previewed to show the Nick how the updated showcase now
looks. To do this, Nick simply selects the “Preview your showcase” tab.
17
The items contained within a showcase can be re-ordered and renamed within the “Tailor showcase
contents” tab. In addition headings and informative descriptive text can be included within the
showcase. Nick is able to constantly review his changes and how they impact on the display of the
showcase by saving the changes and going to the “Preview your showcase” tab. He is able to
iteratively work through his CV until he is happy with the contents and how they are being
displayed.
5.4 Publishing a showcase
Once Nick is happy with the way his CV showcase looks, he can invite people to view it. To do this
Nick, selects the “Share your showcase” tab. Within here, he can add any number of people he
would like to share his CV with. When he has finished adding in the people, he clicks the green
“Publish” button in the bottom right hand corner. This will send an email to all reviewers inviting
them to come and view his showcase, his CV.
