The learner will:
The learner can:
1. Understand the nature of heterotrophic
nutrition.
1.1 Define the term ‘heterotroph’.
1.2 Analyse some examples of heterotrophic
nutrition, saprophytic, parasitic and
holozoic.
2. Understand what is meant by a balanced
diet.
2.1 Analyse the dietary requirements of
humans and foods which would supply
these.
3. Understand the processes of ingestion,
digestion, absorption and elimination.
3.1 Explain the processes and functions of
ingestion, digestion, absorption and
elimination.
3.2 Label and explain the structures
associated with each process.
3.3 Explain the use of peristalsis, and the
structure of a villus in digestion.
4. Understand the difference between
chemical and mechanical digestion.
4.1 Explain the action of teeth, gut movements
and bile salts in increasing surface area
for digestion.
4.2 Analyse the action of the enzymes
amylase, pepsin, lipase and proteases in
digestion.
5. Understand assimilation.
5.1 Explain the role of the liver in assimilation
indicating its use in manufacture of bile
detoxifying, and as a storage organ.
5.2 Analyse the major uses of amino acids,
glucose and lipids within the body.
