Commercialisation of expertise Prof Slabbert specialises in tourism marketing and the impacts of tourism on the community. She acquired research funds awarded to her by the National Research Foundation for analysing the social impacts of events in South Africa (2007-2010). After this she received funding from the National Research Foundation to continue her research on the tangible and intangible benefits of tourism to communities (2012-2014). Besides her own research she is a project leader within TREES focusing on the social impact of tourism especially at arts festivals, national parks and other related study sites. The team is now working towards a centre of excellence. She has authored and co-authored 31 peer reviewed articles, 6 accredited conference proceedings and she started supervising post-graduate students in 2005 as co-supervisor, and since 2006 as supervisor. Since 2005 28 Masters students and 12 Doctorate students completed their studies with success under her guidance. At international level she has presented 34 papers at international conferences. This led to the development of various international network opportunities and international cooperation agreements. Prof Slabbert has also presented 8 papers at national conferences, co-authored 3 books, 10 chapters in books, 54 research reports and 6 in-service training manuals. She is currently serving on the Research Forum of the Minister of Tourism. In 2010 she received the best paper award at the International Tourism Conference on Sustainable Tourism. Together with colleagues, she received the award for the best environmental abstract at the 2013 International Conference on Events. In 2013, she was the second-runner up for the Women in Science Award by the Department of Science and Technology.
