Google is the go-to search engine for
most people on the internet. It's so
popular, in fact, that it's changed the
way many of us talk about searching for
information online.
Have you ever heard someone use the
word "google" as a verb, for example?
•"I don't know the answer. Just google it!"
•"Whoa! You won't believe what we found
when we googled your name."
•"Relax... I'm googling the address right now.”
• The best way to google yourself
automatically is to google yourself
within Google News and set an alert
around your name in quotation
marks.
• Then select Result Type: Everything
and How Many: All Results.
• Google will then email you anything
regarding your name as it finds it and
indexes it.

Option 1: Google.com
Option 2: Your Browser's Search Bar
http://content.gcflearnfree.org/topics/213/google_intro_searchbar.png
• Go to Google's homepage at Google.com. From there,
conducting a search is very straightforward. Just type your
search terms in the box, then click the Google
Search button, or press Enter on your keyboard.
– Conducting a search at Google.com
– If your search results start loading before you finish typing,
don't panic. By default, you may have a feature called Google
Instant enabled. If you don't like the way Google Instant works,
you can disable it later by customizing your search settings.
(We'll show you where your search settings are on page 3 of this
module, under Understanding Your Search Results.)
• Depending on your browser's default search engine, you may be
able to conduct a Google search right from the browser's interface.
For example, in Chrome, you can use the address bar.
• In Firefox (pictured above), you can use the address bar, or the
built-in search bar. Both of these options can be very convenient if
you remember to use them.
• If the default search engine for your browser is something else (for
example, Yahoo! or Bing), you can easily change it to Google.
• To find out how, visit Set Google as my search engine on Google's
support site. The steps are different for each browser, so make sure
you follow the instructions for yours.

Option 3: Google Search App
• If you have a mobile device, you can download
the Google Search app for iOS or Android.
Since it is
optimized for
Google search,
you may find
that the app is
faster or easier
to use than your
device's web
browser.

Tips to “Search Better”
Keep it Simple
• To start off with use the K.I.S.S. method
– Keep, It, Simple, Silly
• Instead of complete sentences, search for
keywords or phrases to find what you’re
looking for. You don’t need to worry about
correct spelling, case or punctuation.
Search for this
Cat, Newton Kansas
Model Train, Newton Kansas
Not this
Tabby with 18 claws in the 100 block of
North Maple, Newton Kansas 67114

members age 30 or younger in North
Newton Kansas
Tips to “Search Better”
Take Suggestions
As you type, Google
will try to guess what
you’re searching for,
and will offer a list of
search suggestions.
• If you see the search terms you want, all you
have to do is click them.
• Suggestions can also give you ideas for search
terms that you may not have thought of.
Tips to “Search Better”
Try Different Search Terms
• You may need to reconsider your search
terms if you’re not finding what you are
looking for.
For example, you could
make them more specific
by adding more
keywords.
Or you could try different
keywords all together.
http://img.wikinut.com/img/252qd1nbbsm104g/jpeg/0/Internet-guru.jpeg
Tips to “Search Better”
Exclude Words
http://img.labnol.org/images/2008/05/google-boolean-search.png
• Use a hyphen ( - ) at the beginning of a
word to exclude search results that contain
it.
For example:
a search for
macaroni –cheese
will yield results
that contain the
word macaroni,
but not cheese.

Tips to “Search Better”
Search for “Exact Phrases”
http://www.fotosearch.com/FSB053/x30841256/
• If you want to search for an exact phrase, you
can put quotes around your search terms.
• For example: “Free Online Childrens Games.”
instead of “games”
• However, the method Google uses to search
for information has become so effective, this
strategy may not be necessary.
– if you are logged into your google account and it
knows you have children. (spooky but helpful)
Works Cited
• To view different types of content that match your
search terms
• For example: images, maps, or news articles
• Use the “Options” that appear above the search
results.
• There you’ll also find dynamic “Search Tools“ that
change to accommodate whatever you’re
searching for.
So, that was a quick introduction to the basics.

Let’s move onto the more
advanced google search options
2- Publish date:
• You can limit results according to when
they are published on the Web. Options
include any time or a custom range like
past month.
5
12/10/2015
3- Reading level:
• You can limit your search results to a specific
reading level (Basic, Intermediate or
Advanced). Perhaps for school reports.
4- Translated foreign pages:
• Sometimes the best results
for your search are written in
another language. Based on
your search term, this filter
chooses the best language
(or languages) to search in,
translates your search, and
then translates the results
back to the language you
prefer to read.
The automatic language selection isn't perfect, of course, so
if you'd like to search specific languages, select them in the
panel above the results.

Dark Web Definition
• The Dark Web is a collection of thousands
of websites that use anonymity tools like Tor
and I2P to hide their IP address.
• While it's most famously been used for black
market drug sales and even child
pornography,
• the Dark Web also enables anonymous
whistleblowing and protects users from
surveillance and censorship.
