The usual tribe of scavenging cackling jackdaws are nesting on rock crevices further up the river bank
with one pair piling sticks, sheeps' wool and anything else into the alcove of my attic window, only for most
of it to fall back to earth, making a huge heap against the house wall. It's great to hear the curlews and the
peewits calls and snipe drumming, especially when cycling back after dark, undisturbed by other sounds. At
the workshop, where our replacement boiler is heating wax for the first time, a chaffinch was head butting
his own reflection in our window and Rory's windscreen, and wouldn't give up! The nucleus hive came
through the winter and the bees are bringing in pollen, but I've insulated the hives again for the end of Aprils'
'lambing' blizzards. Spring fever time, and I'm finding energy to work the garden up the hill again.
It's all change around mine, with Danny across the river having grand plans to expand his bunk house
and camp site, and gutting out a little wood I used to walk in and tend. It's all activity next door at Clog
Hall too. Tony, Carols son put her house up for auction, with the proceeds going to help pay his mothers
care in Grisdale Croft, the local care home where I visit her. Friends of mine with two young kids were
BEV WITH TED AT PANTO
keen to buy Clog Hall and were negotiating with Tony, but his legal advisor told him to auction it. With
a guide price of £55,000 it attracted phenomenal interest, brought weekends of traffic jams and had vehicles stuck in snow along our
track. The bidding rapidly went beyond the reach of my friends, and at £137,000 went to property developers in Durham. Two very
tall brothers and sisters are renovating it, so their mother can spend weekends and holidays in the 'peace and quiet 'of the countryside.
Calvin and Michael have been quick to empty the house, start on major renovations, and fell the huge sycamore that shaded the roof.
I have permission to use Carols greenhouse to sow seeds and get plants going this year, and I hope when they see 'my old friend' ,the
35 year old Belle de Boskop apple tree outside my window in blossom in May (now on their land) they will leave it where I planted it
long ago. I never really saw the importance of land ownership. Living with easy going neighbours over the years, I've never locked my
door. You just made use of what was around you and shared things. Now I've gone to the Land Registry to register the slither of land
by the river Nent I've long used, before someone else does so. Still, I'm very lucky to have a home where I do.
I don't believe it! Another Alston pantomime, the first in 15 years, played to full houses after Easter. Prompted by Happy Steve's
persistence,Trevor Wright wrote a script for Jack and the Beanstalk, involving characters from other panto's, including Peter Pan,
Tinkerbelle, Captain Hook, Cinderella and her sisters, Goldilocks, three bears and seven or eight dwarves. Steve was, as often happens,
nodding off in his armchair, but now in front of the stage. He starts to dream and it's all action on stage. I was not involved, but my 'look
alike' Bev played me ,and made a good fist of it . If Ted swapping Jacks mothers cow for a few beans seemed mean, at least they were
magic beans! For those of all ages taking to the boards, many for the first time, it was a real buzz and a bonding experience. Local band
Mount Hooley provided music for the Panto, and will also be playing on at ALSTON LIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL on the 21ST and 22ND
JULY . The line up also includes Dawn Foster, John Palmer band, Diddley Squat, Glasgow bands Big Hogg and Dope sick fly, Jon Strong
band and Zimbarembwe Mbira Vibes African Reggae. There will be quality food, and kids entertainment and hopefully the sun will shine
on a lovely relaxed family friendly weekend, once again. Tickets limited to 500 and are on sale now
for a bargain £30 for the two days, including camping. Accompanied kids get in free.
Politics is in the air here, with the Labour Party having campaigned for the NHS and our Cottage
Hospital beds, which are likely to go, despite a local plan to integrate medical and social care for the
elderly. Our posty woman, who knows everyone on her rounds, is standing in the County Council
elections in a few days time. Claire has lots of energy, and hopefully, if she gets elected as part of a
Labour group, will be able to translate concerns on rural and school transport and our hospitals into
action,. There will be hard choices, with Tory government support to local councils halved, and set CLAIRE CAMPAIGNING AT NENT
to disappear by 2020. Non statuary services such as toilets and street lights are being passed down for Parish councils to fund. It can
only get worse! There is still such an unpleasant aftertaste from the Brexit vote. So long semi-detached from Europe, even inside the
EU, wanting to have our cake and eat it, the UK will have to pay a price. 'Empress' Teresa May wants a coronation, and says repeatedly
and robotically, that we need STRONG and STABLE LEADERSHIP which only SHE can provide. As Jeremy Corbyn said at her last
PMQ's-" Leadership is about standing up for the many, not the few, but when it comes to the Tories they only look after the richest
and not the rest. They are STRONG against the weak and WEAK against the STRONG." Old'mugwump' Corbyn is a rare person in
politics, someone with principles as well as convictions. Much vilified in most of the media as a danger to the Established order, should
his policies get through to people he might just surprise us. Get the young to register. There must be HOPE.
