Major Donors and Gold Leaders
Your donation
changes lives,
for life.
By giving so generously to Centraide of Greater
Montreal, you are helping a great deal to break
the cycle of poverty and social exclusion. Your
donation is essential not only for us, but also
—and especially—for the 350 agencies and projects
supported by Centraide that work to support
youth success, take care of the essentials, break
social isolation and build caring communities.
Together, we help 1 out of 7 people in Greater
Montreal. On behalf of these individuals and
the agencies who help them, we thank you.

Dear Fellow Major Donors,
Thank you. These are the first words that come to mind when I think of your commitment, generosity and
loyalty to Centraide of Greater Montreal. Again this year, you contributed a great deal to the success of the
2015 Centraide campaign. Overall, the 425 members of the Major Donors’ Circle gave $11.2M, or 21% of
the overall campaign amount of $54.3M.
Message from
the President
of the Major
Donors’ Circle
We are pleased to welcome 72 new members to Centraide’s Major Donors’ Circle, further demonstrating
the influence each of you can have. Being part of the Major Donors’ Circle isn’t just about sharing your
good fortune but also about sharing your time and expertise. Above all, the Circle is a way for you to serve
as a leader in the fight against poverty and social exclusion in Greater Montreal. By getting involved with
Centraide, you are supporting concrete actions contributing to youth success, providing the essentials,
breaking social isolation, and building caring communities. This is something you can take great pride in.
Through my own experience as a volunteer with the Major Donors’ Circle, I have personally witnessed
the impact of Centraide’s expertise and investments in the community. By targeting the most dynamic
community agencies and projects, and identifying the community’s specific needs, Centraide ensures
that your charitable donations go further. In the Greater Montreal area, one out of seven individuals
receives help from one of these agencies or projects.
By participating in one of Centraide’s tailored activities created exclusively for Major Donors, you too can
witness at first hand the great impact of your donation on the community. These activities are also unique
opportunities to network with your peers.
We invite you to take a few minutes to read about the Major Donors, and the inspiring stories behind
their philanthropic commitment to Centraide.
THANK YOU for changing lives, for life!
Lino A. Saputo, Jr.
Chief Executive Officer and Vice Chairman of the Board, Saputo Inc.

Joining forces to accelerate change
7 foundations invest $21M in the Collective Impact
Project (CIP).
New in 2015, the CIP is an accelerator of change that aims to increase the
impact of collective action and achieve measurable and significant outcomes
in the reduction of poverty in Montreal neighbourhoods.
Neither a program nor a fund, the CIP is a new form of support for community
development that reinforces but does not supplant Centraide’s normal
funding methods.
The CIP has been made possible through the help of major foundations that
have committed $21M to Centraide of Greater Montreal over 5 years:

B E N E FA C T O R S
Known for her incredible generosity, Jacqueline Desmarais is an inspiration for other
philanthropists. She and her late husband, Paul G. Desmarais, were two of the first
members of Centraide’s Major Donors’ Circle. The couple passed on their deep values
of caring and sharing to their children and grandchildren, including Paul Desmarais, Jr.,
who founded the Major Donors’ Circle of Centraide of Greater Montreal.
“When we moved to Montreal, my husband and I immediately fell in love with this cosmopolitan city
and its culture. When you give to Centraide, you get to support a community network that helps improve
the quality of life for our community and its most vulnerable members. This ensures that Montreal
continues to be a great place to live.”
To encourage Leadership donations, Donald Guloien, President and CEO, Manulife,
and his wife, Irene Boychuk, pledged $1.4M to United Way Toronto & York Region,
Centraide of Greater Montreal, and United Way Kitchener Waterloo & Area.
“Canada is a wonderful place to live, with a stable economy and healthy employment levels. However, there are
still many Canadians who, for a variety of reasons, aren’t able to take advantage of the opportunities available
to others, and who need a helping hand. We felt that giving to Centraide and United Ways was the best way
to reach the broadest number of those in need and make a real difference.
B E N E FA C T O R S
We are excited about the impact that our contribution will have on our community, and on youth in particular.
All young people need as many opportunities as possible to achieve their goals and reach their full potential.
We also wanted to do something concrete to thank our colleagues and friends in Montreal and across Quebec,
which is a very important focus for Manulife.”

“In 2011, when we visited an agency, it really opened our eyes
to the local needs and the impressive and compassionate work
of the Centraide-funded agencies. For a few years, we gave
anonymously, because we weren’t interested in recognition for
our giving. But sometimes, when we look around at our peers,
we are surprised that there aren’t even more people giving
to keep our city a place where people on the edge of poverty
have hope and opportunities. We are proud of our support
of Centraide, and we hope to inspire others to give.”

agencies to see first-hand how they operate, how our money
is invested, what their needs are, and how we can meet
these needs. We have been proudly supporting Centraide
for more than 40 years, and we’ve seen the organization
grow into a dedicated and professional team which does
essential work to improve the quality of life of people in
Montreal. Like many others, the Birks Family Foundation
realizes that its support for the community could never
be as effective as it is without Centraide.”

“Our family has lived in Montreal for over 100 years.
Generation after generation, we’ve been involved in our
community to help everyone live with dignity. For example,
my granddaughter is very committed and has volunteered
a number of times for Santropol Roulant and other agencies.
I wanted to work with Centraide to increase the impact
of my donation. Since it provides support to all of Greater
Montreal, Centraide is the best way for me to reach my
philanthropic goals.”
“We really like Montreal because the city has so many
dimensions, and anyone can take part in its ubiquitous
culture. As loyal donors for many years, we know that
many people in our midst are truly in need. This affects us
a great deal. By giving to Centraide, an organization that
we trust completely, we know that our donation will be
soundly invested. We also know that it will help people in
need access the multitude of services provided by different
agencies in Greater Montreal.”

“I learned about the beauty of giving through my friends – it
really impacted me to hear their stories of how giving back had
become a central part of who they are. Centraide tells me that
I have enriched others through my gift, but I am the one who
feels enriched. It is now my turn to share my stories with my
daughters, opening their eyes to the need that exists around us
and how each one of us can do our part. I hope that’s a lesson
they learn from a young age.”

“Giving is natural for me, as it comes from my parents’
philosophy of being part of the community and making
it better. I’ve worked in four different Canadian provinces,
and in each one, I’ve gotten involved with community
organizations, such as the United Way and the Rotary Club,
to share my professional networks and expertise. When
I came back to Montreal, I reconnected with Centraide,
and I appreciate how my donation supports agencies that
I wouldn’t have otherwise known about.”
“It takes a lot of work to educate people about philanthropy.
My wife and I spend a lot of time talking to youth about
the importance of social involvement, starting with our
own children, who get involved with different causes. When
you’re young and don’t have a lot to spare, you can always
find a way to give, even if it’s just your time. Once you get
older, you can share your money, ideas or expertise. We also
use our leadership to inspire the people around us to get
involved and to give.”

“During the Christmas celebrations of Les Ateliers d’éducation
populaire du Plateau, we noticed their Centraide flags and
decided to do a bit more for our community. I started to
promote Centraide more actively, as I love the idea that this
organization not only supports people in need, but also creates
spaces where people from different walks of life can come
together. Sometimes, the most powerful way to break solitude
and prejudices is a few sandwich platters and bowls of chips!”
“I created the Première Moisson bakeries to help Quebeckers
eat healthfully and to create jobs, which is a vision that
could be described as philanthropic. I decided to give to
Centraide because I felt I could really trust this organization.
Above all, Centraide helps me continue to fulfill my mission
to improve the quality of life for people in my community.”

“Centraide gives hope and opportunity to thousands of
people in Greater Montreal, including many in my own
neighbourhood, to break free from the shackles of poverty
and live up to their full potential. As a proud Montrealer,
I am delighted to support the work of this wonderful
organization that knows, as I do, that our community
is only as strong as our people and will only succeed
if we all succeed. I encourage others of my generation
to do the same!”

“It is my great pleasure and privilege to be part of the Major
Donors’ Circle, and I would really like to see more of my
peers in this group. As a doctor, I focus on prevention to
promote health. Giving to Centraide makes a lot of sense for
me, because the community agencies that it supports also
work in prevention. Giving locally is vital for our community:
since Centraide has in-depth knowledge of the different
agencies in Greater Montreal, I know my money will go
to where needs are greatest.”
“Self-fulfillment comes from social involvement. Aon supports
these initiatives by giving all of its employees around the
world the opportunity to volunteer for a day at a community
agency. Giving either your time or money brings incredible
personal wealth. We can learn a lot from Centraide’s
agencies, which make miracles happen with few resources.
In business, we corporate leaders look for this same level
of efficiency and performance.”

In 2016, Centraide of Greater Montreal created the Forever Fund, which includes
all donations pledged to Centraide through estate planning.
Donors to the Forever Fund help break the cycle of poverty and social exclusion for
many generations in the future. In fact, Forever Fund donations are placed in a capital
fund whose investment income is given annually to Centraide of Greater Montreal.
We want to thank these donors whose bequests or other planned gifts will forever
help our community.

Francis Gutmann’s
Legacy
A tribute
to all those who deserve
OUR THANKS!
Francis Gutmann loved Montreal. The city’s cultural, artistic and educational activities
always brought him great joy and happiness. To give back, he decided to help develop
a variety of important sectors for the city, such as the arts, youth, and social causes.
Mr. Gutmann was a modest man who was passionate about achieving greater social
justice and greater social and economic equality so that children, teens, artists from
all disciplines, and people from many other walks of life could reach their full potential.
He wanted Montreal to be a city where the sun shone upon everyone.
We are pleased to honour Mr. Gutmann’s memory and legacy. Because of his donation,
vulnerable people will have more opportunities and Montreal will continue to be a great
place to live.
We also want to pay homage to all those who made a donation to the Forever Fund
but whom, like Mr. Gutmann, we never got the chance to thank in person.

Mr. Gutmann requested that the amount of his gift not be published.
