A MESSAGE TO FAMILIES
The commencement of the year has been a very positive one, with so many activities already in our
school.
STAFF
Firstly, I would like to welcome Miss Tia Scott, who has been appointed to the Maths faculty.
Secondly, I would like to welcome Mr Andrew Wilson, who has been appointed to the Social Science
faculty.
Over the last few weeks of term, there were some staff changes. Some of these were as a result of
staff retiring; others were positions filled as our staff entitlements expanded.
Firstly, in the senior executive, Mrs Thurling has returned to Social Science. I thank her for her
outstanding work last year in the role of Deputy Principal. I welcome Mr Ross McGarvie to the senior
executive team. I know he will do an excellent job in the position. Ms Kate Dixon will be Head
Teacher English and History this year. Mr Glenn Rose and Miss Claire Holloway have joined the
English History faculty this year, and I welcome all to their new positions.
Secondly, with the retirement of Mr Skillington, Mrs Katrina Joss will be Head Teacher in 2015. Ms
Nicky Hagen will join her in the Visual Art Department. I really look forward to working with Mrs
Joss in this capacity, and I know that Ms Hagen will enjoy her passion in teaching Art.
Thirdly, Mr Hamish Taylor has been appointed as the Careers Adviser at James Fallon High School. I
congratulate him on his appointment and I know he is very much looking forward to supporting
students in their plans for life outside the school gate. He is still Year 8 Advisor. I welcome Mr Narin
Eckley to the role vacated by Mr Taylor.
Fourthly, Mrs Deanna Fletcher has been appointed as a Learning and Support Teacher. I also
congratulate her on this appointment, and I look forward to her contribution to the LST team. She is
still Year 10 Advisor. Ms Miriam O’Connell will be in the TAS faculty this year as a result, and I
also welcome Ms Maree Stokes to our school, for a block of teaching this term. Mrs Sandra Morrison
will be a full time LST teacher this year, and Mrs Snow will also take on the role of Head Teacher
Learning Support. This team is vital to our school, and I am very proud of them and the work they do,
and will do this year.
In the PDHPE department, Mrs Carissa Furze is HT PDHPE and Mrs Jane Duck joins her as the other
Sports Organiser at JFHS. Miss Alex Skipworth will remain in our PDHPE team.
In the HSIE Department, Mrs Katie Stein will act in the position unfilled by Mrs Pam Lockley.
Lastly, with the retirement of Mrs Jo Taylor, Ms Shauna Ray will join the Special Education faculty.
Mrs Ray did a great deal of work with our Multicategorical class, in Mrs Donna Wardle’s absence. I
welcome Mrs Wardle back, and thank Mrs Ray for her continued service to our school.
LEADERSHIP AND LEVEL 1
The Prefect Investiture, along with the induction of House and Vice Captains, was a very well
attended and incredibly positive event. The families there to witness the pledge could not have been
prouder. I congratulate our Dux for 2014, Miss Jessica McKenzie. I admire this young woman
enormously, for her dedication to her learning, her service to the school, and her positivity and poise
throughout her school career. It was a very proud moment for her mother, as she also saw Lucy
McKenzie, Jess’ sister, inducted as House Captain. There were other multiple leaders, even twins, to
make Ms Belinda Walther, mother of Lindsay and Ben, so very proud.
Level 1 was similarly a private, warm event, where our families got to celebrate the achievements of
their children. The evening is one that we could expose more people to, in order to have them strive
for Level 1, but the evening does belong to the individuals, and the people who care about them the
most. Twenty two Level 1 recipients were recognised in the supper on the 19th February.
OUR SCHOOL PLAN
The school has invested time and care in the direction it wishes to head in the coming years. To that
end, the 2015-2017 School Plan has been written and will be uploaded on the school’s website by
Week 7. Coinciding with this will be a Facebook page established for our community to see a little
more of what our school is doing.
The strong features of this plan include strong communication, expanded opportunities for leadership
in professional learning, continued growth in literacy and diversity of opportunity for all students.
Expectations of students will be made clear, and work on how our school is represented are also key
features. I look forward to launching this plan soon.
YEAR 7 AND NEW ENROLMENTS
The current Year 7 has settled into our school very well. They are a very positive group of students.
There have been some issues (as there always are) in transitioning to our large, busy school, and I am
pleased to see them using support around them to resolve those issues. There will be a “Meet the
Teachers” night on Monday, 2nd March for Year 7 parents.
We have also gained over 30 new enrolments in other years. The students who have joined our school
have, on the whole, been great assets to our environment already. From Germany to Orange, from
cities and farms, we have had new students to welcome to our school. To those families, I bid you the
warmest of welcomes. Our community is one I feel very fortunate to know and work with.
Jenny Parrett
PRINCIPAL
From the Deputy Principal Curriculum
The school year is well and truly underway and students across the school have settled well into their
classes and learning.
Year 7
Our newest students, the Year 7 group of 2015, have begun well under the efficient guidance of their
Year adviser, Jess Alvey. In Week 5, teachers of each Year 7 class will be involved in discussing the
progress of the students and how the members of the class are progressing as a whole. All parents of
our Year 7 students have been invited to attend the annual ‘Meet the Teachers’ function. This event
will take place on Monday, 2nd March from 4.30 – 6.00 p.m. in the main quadrangle. Light
refreshments will be provided and parents should feel welcome to attend at any time during that
period. It is an informal occasion which should build on the vital home-school partnership we foster at
James Fallon HS to support your child. A letter with an RSVP slip attached went home with all Year
7 students in Week 4. Please return that slip to the front office, me or Mrs Alvey at the school by
Friday, 27th February. We look forward to welcoming parents to the school.
Year 10
The Year 10 assessment booklet was distributed by the year adviser, Deanna Fletcher, to all such
students on Friday, 20th February. The booklet contains a summary of the assessment tasks and their
weightings in each Year 10 subject in 2015. The emphasis on improving our senior students’ HSC
results does not begin when they start senior school at the beginning of Year 11. It is a continuum of
learning and acculturation which starts in Year 7 that leads to each student doing their best.
Consistent with that idea of fostering a culture of academic achievement and excellence at James
Fallon High School, the Year 10 assessment booklets contain a very clear assessment policy. Much of
the policy mirrors the one we have for our senior students. Students in Year 10 in 2015 need to meet
task deadlines, understand the limited grounds upon which variations from assessment task
requirements are granted and the importance of informing their teachers as early as possible if there
are any concerns about their understanding or capacity to meet the requirements of an assessment
task.
Year 11
Those Year 11 students who changed their minds about a subject they selected in 2014 to study in
senior school were all interviewed about their change of heart and in most cases, have now switched
to their preferred option.
Year 11 were given their assessment booklets by Nick Grace-Wenzel in Week 3. In distributing the
booklets, Mr Grace-Wenzel emphasised the importance of effective study habits and learning patterns
to the year group.
Many Year 11 classes are at or near capacity and there is a palpable and positive learning energy
across the cohort. They have clearly begun senior school very well which is terrific to see!
Year 12
Those HSC students who sought permission to discontinue a course at the beginning of the 2015
school year were each subjected to the same process: an interview with the Deputy Principal
Curriculum and consultation by the Deputy with their Year Adviser and their teachers as appropriate.
A balanced decision as to whether the particular student was an appropriate candidate to spend several
periods each week in the library undertaking independent study was then made. This process is
designed to continue building a culture of academic achievement and endeavour at James Fallon.
Notification of Term One assessment tasks for HSC courses have been issued to classes or will be
very shortly. Students should start early on the learning and preparation for these tasks and ask for
assistance from their teachers as needed. The halfway point of the Year 12 course of study is only a
few weeks away.
Level 2 awards ceremony
It was a pleasure to present a number of Year 12 and Year 11 students with their Level 2 certificates
on Friday, 20th February in front of their parents and families. The citations Mrs Duck and Mr GraceWenzel gave to accompany each student’s award attested to their strong values, willingness to
contribute to the life of the school and the community and their achievements as role models.
Congratulations to Paris Antone, Coen Cooper and Merinda Milgate of Year 12. Congratulations also
to Blake Beyer, Mikaela Clark, Jahred Harrison, Rachel Harvey, Curtis Iverson, Lawrey Kishere and
Thomas McGibbony of Year 11 on attaining this lofty peak in the school’s awards landscape.

**** P&C Ne ws ****
The James Fallon High School P&C would like to warmly welcome both new and existing families to the school
and hope you have a wonderful year.
Canteen
For those who are new to our school, we would like to encourage family members to
volunteer at our P&C Canteen either on a regular basis or even just once a term. Our
canteen manager Merelda Crocker is an energetic leader who is a delight to work with, and
who always welcomes new helpers. If anyone is interested in helping out, the volunteer
roster for 2015 will be available on the school website shortly under Canteen in the Other
Stuff tab. Enquiries can be made by phoning Merelda on 6025 1688.
Our volunteers are invaluable to the school in that they help the P&C reduce wage costs which in turn allows our
Canteen to provide healthy meals at reduced prices to the students. The volunteer hours also result in
proceeds from the Canteen which are donated back to the school in the form of equipment purchases, student
support for the Breaky Club and the Special Ed Department, and also larger long term projects for the school.

Traineeship
We welcome Lisa James to the position of Trainee at the Canteen and wish her all the best in her
studies and especially in her work at the Canteen, gaining valuable experience for her course, and
for future employment.
Please welcome Lisa to her new position.
Bookpacks
It was a successful couple of days selling bookpacks with thanks to the fantastic volunteers
on both days as well as the new supplier at Barkers Packaging and Stationery. This year the
bookpacks were in zip bags which made toting the packs (including electives) much easier. It
was a learning curve with a new supplier, but overall it ran reasonably smoothly and any
suggestions for future sale days will be warmly welcomed. The P&C endeavours to make the
bookpacks affordable, whilst at the same time making a small profit to be spent on school
equipment.
If you would like to comment on the bookpacks and the sale days, please email Kathy Anderson at
[email protected] or drop a note into the Canteen.
Uniform Shop
For those who are new to the school the second hand
and is available to all during normal canteen hours.
Uniform Shop is located in the Canteen
The Uniform Shop has had a massive demand for uniforms this year and at present is short of girls’ summer
dresses and boys’ shorts. If you are able to help out with donations of any of the styles of good quality second
hand uniforms, please drop them into the Canteen to Judi Gadd (our Uniform Shop guru) or Merelda. Enquiries
can be made by phone on 6025 1688.
P&C Meeting
The P&C meet once a month during the term, with the dates appearing in the P&C section on
the school website. All parents and citizens are welcome to attend meetings and be involved in
some of the issues regarding the school.

The Level 1 ‘James Fallon Award for Outstanding Achievement’ was awarded to 21 students at our
recognition ceremony held on 19th March. Recipients, all year 12 students, were accompanied by their
parents/carers and siblings. There were 55 in attendance for a wonderful night. We had the pleasure of
listening to the achievements of each student. The citations written by Mrs Duck outlined the
contributions students have made to the school and community, and their academic achievements.
These students have maintained a high level of commitment and dedication towards themselves and their
school community. They have demonstrated that they are respectful, responsible individuals who
consistently strive for success.
Congratulations to the following Level 1 Recipients:

Lions Youth of the Year
Each year Lions Australia runs the Youth of the Year program to encourage, foster and develop
leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities in our youth. The competition is open to
students between the ages of 15 and 19 years and it requires that students showcase their academic and
sportsmanship attainments as well as demonstrating their citizenship and leadership qualities
James Fallon High School was ably represented by Yr 11 student Cameron Evans, who participated in
the Lavington Lion’s Club round of the competition on Tuesday 24th February. Unfortunately Cameron
was not selected to proceed to the regional round in this competition, but he represented our school with
pride, talking passionately about the String Movement and sharing with member of the local community
and other schools the work that the JFHS SWAT Team does to combat bullying and raise awareness
about youth mental health issues in our school. Cameron was warmly congratulated and praised on the
night for his passion and the mature manner with which he spoke.

The Tell Them From Me student feedback survey
I am delighted that this term, our school, like many others in the state, will participate in a Department of
Education and Communities initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey
aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic
achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing,
engagement and effective teaching practices.
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-forparents. The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide our school with valuable and quick
feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways
that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them
From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.
I want to assure you that the survey is confidential and school staff will not be able to identify individual
students from their responses. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30
minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 9 March and 2 April.
Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

Art from the Heart
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE AT JAMES FALLON HIGH SCHOOL
Award winning contemporary South Australian indigenous artist Roger Saunders, will be conducting
his successful Art from the Heart program with students at James Fallon High School during the next
two weeks.
The program, which is endorsed by Queensland Police and Queensland Education, is structured
around a series of workshops in which the students collaborate on the production of a large 3D “dot”
mural, which is installed at the school on completion.
The program, which has seen schools from Queensland to South Australia participate, is now in its eighth
year and continues to grow in popularity with workshops already scheduled at Gladstone, Palm Island,
Quilpie, Normanton, Doomadgee and Mornington Island this year.
Principal Jenny Parrett is delighted that Roger has been able to travel from his home base in
Bundaberg to conduct the workshops with students in Years 7, 8, 9 & 10.
The collaborative nature of the project reflects our school motto “Together we Succeed.” This,
along with the confidence gained by the students from creating an artwork of this magnitude,
will help to reinforce the schools values of respect, responsibility and achievement” she said.
Whilst at the school, Roger will also assist the senior year students with their creation of a separate
mural, to be installed in the Year 12 common room as their gift to the school.
Roger is no stranger to the Albury region, having previously participated in the successful Artist in
Residence program at the Albury Art Gallery in 2012, with the Art from the Heart program conducted
at schools in the Myrtleford area.
Any school interested in participating in the program during 2016 is welcome to contact Roger via

JFHS Carnival
We dived straight into 2015 with our school swimming carnival occurring in week two. Our house
captains worked hard throughout the day ensuring everyone participated in some way to gain points
towards their house tally, whether by competing in swimming events, strutting their stuff during
‘Fashions on the Pool Deck’ or by stretching their vocal chords during the house chants.
Congratulations to our captains and vice-captains for a successful first carnival: Georgia Pontt, Aidan
McMillan, Jack Gadd, Lucy McKenzie, Molly Daly, Amy Drummond, Dylan Hartin, Erin Head, Zac
Smith and Aidan Baxter.
On final tally Cook house took out honours for the first of our three sporting carnivals for the year,
followed by Flinders, Bass and Tasman. Our age champions for the carnival were:

Zone Carnival
Our school carnival was quickly followed by the Zone carnival in week five, with forty-one of our
students competing against Albury, Murray, Corowa and Billabong high schools in an extremely
competitive meet. All students participated with a strong will and commitment to achieve their
personal best and were highly commended representatives of James Fallon High School.
After competing in four events over the day and coming first in all four, Jai Smith was awarded the 16
year old male Zone Age Champion. This is an extraordinary feat from a student without swim club
training – just a natural athlete who enjoys competing in a variety of sports.
Twelve of our students were successful in making it through to the Riverina swimming carnival (Jai
Smith, Abe Daly, Matthew Lynch, Ben Hines, Ben Gardiner, Mark Honeyman, Alhana Hofer, Sonali
Kagathala, Finn Lockley-Hinschen, Dana Hay, Aidan McMillan, Lachlan Ralph and Miria
Cunningham) and for those students who accept this challenge, we wish them the best of luck in this
higher level of competition.

Welcome back for another year of great community service through the blood donor program.
2014 Results
The great news is that JFHS managed to come 3rd in NSW for our overall number of donations which
is incredible news. This tally includes donations from our students, staff and any other members of
our school community (friends and family).
The other category is the percentage of our potential donors that gave blood and in this category we
came 5th in NSW which is another amazing effort. We came 1st in both categories when looking only
at Albury/Wodonga schools and continue to be the school to beat in this region.
2015
I am looking forward to 2015 being even better as we have such a great group of committed young
donors who are keen to serve their community. The new “school community” category gives all of us
a chance to contribute to the school’s final tally. If you are a parent and donate blood please remember
to mention to the Blood Bank that you would like your donation added to our tally. If you have any
friends who donate blood they can also follow this procedure and help us out.
Student information
All students who are donating blood are reminded that it is extremely important to eat and drink a lot
the night before and the day of your donation. It is also essential that you take photo ID (e.g passport,
school ID, drivers licence) until you receive your donor card in the mail. Most donor appointments
are made on a Tuesday afternoon - you will leave school after lunch and return usually at the
beginning of period 8. You will travel in a taxi that is paid for by the blood bank.
Exemptions
All students may only donate once/year until they turn 18
You must weigh at least 45kg
Piercings (other than ears done at a chemist) – 4 month wait
Tattoos – 6 month wait
Surgery – 6 month wait
Overseas travel – varies depending on country visited – see
me for more information.
Medication – some medications may prevent blood donation
– see me for details.

Wagirra Trail
During Term 3 of 2014 Aunty Robyn Heckenberg, a Wiradjuri Elder and creative Director of the
Wagirra Trail Project approached James Fallon High school with an idea about including some of our
students in a project. Students were invited to come up with some designs that could be used on the
Wagirra trail and these were workshopped with Aunty Robyn & Ms. Hagen.
What followed was a series of highly productive workshops in which our AEW, Andrea Edwards &
Ms. Hagen took four students to the ‘Men’s Shed’ at AWAHS to fabricate sculptural forms from old,
local red gum. Under the direction of the students, Pastor Darren, Uncle Tunny, Uncle Andem &
Leonie were all on hand to give valuable advice and wield chainsaws for the sake of art.
Sarah & Raymond Jackson-Edwards, Liam Campbell & Jaidyn Hampton are our resident artists and
their works now form part of the Yinyamarra Trail, a walking track that curves along the banks of the
Murray river from the Cremer Street boat ramp to Wonga Wetlands. These works have become part
of the cultural landscape of Albury city and the students have been able to participate in a project that
can be enjoyed for many years to come.

Drama Faculty
12 Drama Takes a Trip to Sydney
Year 12 Drama had an ace trip up to Sydney for three jam-packed days in Week 4. All together our
budding thespians attended 2 professional shows, participated in 2 workshops, a film viewing of a set
HSC text, visited three theatre companies - and saw a live showcase of the best HSC Drama
performances from last year’s HSC.
Our itinerary managed to tackle every topic in the HSC course, whether it be the uproariously funny
‘After Dinner’ at the Sydney Theatre Company (for their studies of Black Comedy) to a high-energy
Group Devising workshop at Belvoir St Theatre.
Some students even managed to fit in a little inspiration for their other subjects too - by attending
Encore with Mrs Joss (for HSC Dance) and Writers’ OnStage (for HSC English Extension 2).
Of course, being in Sydney, we had to hit up some tasty food and squeeze in some quality sightseeing.
Diving into the crystal waters of Coogee Beach was the perfect way to tie off three outstanding days
in the Emerald City.
It was truly a trip of high-octane engagement, leaving our class teeming with inspiration and
enthusiasm (teacher included) and ready really to get their teeth into their Drama projects.
I cannot be emphatic enough about how much of a pleasure it was to take these young adults away on
this trip. To call them ‘well-behaved’ would not give them the credit they deserve. They were
unrelentingly autonomous, mature, passionate and involved – right up to our bleary-eyed arrival at
Albury Station 4.12am on Saturday morning. Would take them all away again in a heartbeat.
Thank you to our parents and caregivers for their support in making this trip possible!

NSW SCHOOL VACCINATION PROGRAM
Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the
National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school
vaccination program.
In 2015 the following vaccines will be offered:
Year 7 students*
•
•
•
dTpa vaccine (Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis (whooping cough)) as a single dose
varicella vaccine (chickenpox) as a single dose; and
human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in a 3-dose schedule at 0, 2 and 6 months (students who
commence HPV vaccination in Year 7 but do not complete the course may be offered catch-up
doses at school in Year 8)
Year 11-12 students*
•
measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine as a single dose as part of a catch-up vaccination
program for students who are not fully protected.
*
The Parent Information Kits contain a consent form, information sheet and privacy statement that
details how personal information will be collected, stored and utilised.
Parent Information Kits will be sent home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their
child, parents/guardians are advised to:
• read all the information provided
• complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like
their child to receive
• return the completed consent form to their child’s school by Wednesday, 11 March 2015
• ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.
Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the
school Principal or phoning the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the
NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation.
To improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses
throughout the year where possible.
Please note that for HPV vaccine only, parents/guardians must record their Medicare Number (all 10
digits and the 11th number beside the child’s name) on the consent form, as this is required to record
the student’s information on the National HPV Vaccination Register and (for female students only)
link to the National or State Cervical Screening Program.
A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic. Parents/guardians
should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has
been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination.
