Escape with a legend 500 years in the making with Globe Theatre’s
ROBIN HOOD
November 23, 2011 – January 1, 2012
REGINA, October 31, 2011 – Arrows flying through the air, sword fights, young love and
adventure fill Globe Theatre’s holiday production of Robin Hood, running November 23,
2011 to January 1, 2012. This show is appropriate for all ages.
Adapted by Globe Theatre’s Artistic Director and CEO Ruth Smillie, this world premiere
distills action, suspense, humor and romance into a theatre adventure! While England’s
beloved King Richard battles in the crusades, his people suffer under the tyranny of Prince
John and the Sheriff of Nottingham. Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men take it upon
themselves to thwart the evil rulers of England by stealing from the rich to give to the poor.
The cast features a number of graduates from the Globe Actor Conservatory program: Greg
Ochitwa (Robin Hood), Mark Claxton (Dickon Barleycorn), Kent Evans (Alan-a-Dale),
Kate Herriot (Maid Marion), Lucy Hill (Lady Lily), Daniel Maslany (Will Scarlet) and Colby
Richardson (Prince John). They are joined on stage by actors Stephen Gartner (Little
John), Gordon S. Miller (Sheriff of Nottingham), Tony Munch (Walter of Weybridge),
Michael Spencer-Davis (Oswald Montdragon) and Judy Wensel (Black Barbara).
The artistic team is lead by director David Storch (Metamorphoses) and assistant director
Bronwyn Angley. Designers Dana Osborne (Set/Costume), Wendy Greenwood (Lighting)
and Daniel Maslany (Sound) will transform our stage into castles, dungeons, and the
depths of Sherwood Forest. Esther Howie is the stage manager, Lisa Russell is the
assistant stage manager and Kenilee Kehler is the apprentice stage manager. The Fight
Director is Simon Fon and assistant fight director is Adrian Young.

This is a world premiere of this adaptation of Robin Hood.
The Mighty Oak is the touchstone for the stage. It is based on the “Major Oak”, a
huge oak tree near the village of Edwinstowe in the heart of Sherwood Forest,
Nottinghamshire, England. According to local folklore, it was Robin Hood's shelter
where he and his merry men slept. The “Major Oak” weighs an estimated 23 tons,
has a girth of 33 feet (10 metres), and is about 800–1000 years old.
There will be arrows flying through the air.
Cast members will fight on stage using long staffs and broadswords.
There are 42 scenes and 97 costume changes.
The chainmail we will use it authentic steel chainmail, weighing roughly 15lbs.
Ten “horses” made of wire cages will be featured on stage.
The cast features graduates of the Globe Actor Conservatory program; Greg Ochitwa,
Mark Claxton, Kent Evans, Kate Herriot, Lucy Hill, Daniel Maslany and Colby
Richardson.
The Fight Director will be directed by Simon Fon. Fon has trained thousands of
people in stage combat from coast to coast over the past 18 years. He is a member of
Fight Directors Canada, and holds the title of Fight Master. He will be joined by
assistant Fight Director, Adrian Young.
Several of the costumes are on rental from the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, and
feature real steel chainmail.
Set and costume designer Dana Osborne worked with Globe Theatre during the
2005|2006 Season on Cinderella. She was brought on in an emergency basis replace
the previous designer, and created the costumes for the entire cast one week before
opening. Other Globe Theatre design credits include Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks
and Sexy Laundry.
