1 Calne News . . . st Group News issue 9 20/07/2011 Thanks to all of the members and their families that attended the AGM, it was lovely to see many of the children getting their awards. A point that has been noted was the duration of the evening which did stretch out for some time, we will work on this to make sure that our next one is just right. Nevertheless I do think the leaders did a great job organising the displays in the Hall and running the evening. Just to let everyone know we still have a number of vacant roles in the group so if you are willing to get involved then please speak to one of the leaders. Also more importantly it was our official chance to say thank you to Audrey Lucas who is retiring from her role as Group Scout Leader. I am sure that Audrey’s dedication to the young people (quite a few now adults) and Scouting has left a long lasting legacy in Calne. We wish you well and once again thanks. Happy Holidays Final week before the school holidays and I think I can speak on behalf of all of the Group when I say it feels like we’ve not stopped since the last newsletter and we’re all due for a well earned break, some of us at least as both the Cubs and Scouts are having a camp so lets hope the weather makes a change for the better. So read on to find out what has happened over the last month and see you all in September. Fundraising A big thanks to everyone who have helped out at the Calne Summer Carnival where we had another good day, raising £333.22.This was better than last year by £71, which was good since other traders complained about lower numbers of visitors. It could be that word has got out that we have changed the supplier of our burgers. It was also good to welcome some new helpers – Simon Brewis and Ed Conroy-Purbick. Well we were back at the Country & Western, Saturday 2nd – Sunday 3rd July providing catering again after a break of around 4 years. This event really was hard work and I do hope it has not taken too much out of people since what was expected to be a very good generator of income was in the end quite mediocre. Let’s look at this positively though we were there, made rather a large amount of Chilli and will, we hope, receive a donation from the organisers since we are one of the beneficiaries. Over the two day period our takings were a touch over £1,070 with £383.56 raised. We had tremendous help setting up and manning our catering set up – too many to mention, a separate e-mail of thanks has been sent. We already have mentioned that Caroline Lonsdale is leaving and this week was her last section night where the Beavers had great fun and a little BBQ funded by the Group to say goodbye. A quiz held on one of the recent Monday night meetings left the leaders laughing when one of the questions was what type of tents do we sleep in and one of the eager members of the colony piped up “we sleep in petrol tents” of course its patrol tents Cubs summer camp is being held at Foxlease in the New Forest between the 23 rd and 26th July, where we are taking 11 Cubs away. There was a good turn out at the Carnival where there was a Pirates of the Caribbean theme and the cubs paraded with a rather nifty replica of the Black Pearl pirate ship which was a cunning creation using one of our go carts. Again this week Cubs have also had a similar BBQ. It was good to see a few of our scouts helping at the last two fundraising events, really appreciated by us adults. The water activity day which took place at Corsham lake went well, Aline was persuaded to go on the water in a Canadian Canoe to perform an investiture of a new scout out on the lake. We’re please to report that no-one got wet and the ceremony was a success, we’re not so sure if Aline is convinced to do it again. Also a group of scouts from both sections attended the District Go Cart completion, we weren’t top of the leader board but still a good day’s carting was experienced. Perhaps a few tips have been taken away from this activity to improve / streamline our carts to secure us a win. Finally Simon Lonsdale from Thursday night scouts is also leaving as his job takes him to Cheltenham, good luck and thanks for the last 7 years of support. It wasn’t a dry departure, not because of tears but a water fight and BBQ was held this week. Contacts. Dates for the diary. An updated diary will be available after the summer Group Scout To be appointed Leader 01249 - Beavers Leader Ann Swatton 01249 813226 [email protected] We now need a Fundraising Co-ordinator Thanks to the parents who volunteered in the last events, it was really positive to see how much support was available. Now it would be great to have some one to lead the fundraising committee, the next meeting is at the Lansdowne Strand on Wednesday 7th September starting at 7:30pm. Increase in Subscriptions. The increase in subscription fees at 1st Calne Scout Group was supported and approved at the AGM, therefore those of you who are paying through a standing order please can you increase the amount to £9 per child for the September payment. Parents who pay by cash or cheque please be aware that you will pay £10 per child each term month (note which ever way you pay it is the same yearly amount). Both Caleb and Oliver have had good design ideas which we would like to incorporate together into a badge which promotes the group and celebrates the last 100 years. So rather than one winner they will both receive a well done card and book token when they return in the summer - well done both of you and thanks to everyone who entered . Caleb’s design on the top left was simple and effective showing that there had been a strong 100 years of scouting in Calne. Oliver has also had strong design ideas again including the Scouting Fleur de Lys but also focussing upon prominent symbols of our town, namely the statue of the pigs as well as the new Calne Flag. Leaders will finalise the design since it is part of the uniform for 1 full year and the badge will then be produced. Go Carting at Swindon Rugby Ground, Greenbridge.
