A Message from the Lieutenant Governor
On behalf of all British Columbians I extend my congratulations
and best wishes to the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival
on its 90th anniversary.
For 90 years this festival has provided a platform for young
performers to hone their skills and share their talents with the
community. I believe a strong arts presence plays an important
and influential role in the strength and vitality of a community as
a whole. I offer my gratitude to the many volunteers who have
dedicated their time and energy to this festival and made
significant and continued contributions to the arts in our region.
As Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia and Honorary
Patron of the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival, I wish
all the artists the best of luck for a most successful performance. May the community have the
pleasure of enjoying your talent for years to come!
Sincerely,
The Honourable Judith Guichon, OBC
Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia

WELCOME TO FESTIVAL 2017 – 90 YEARS!
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Greater Victoria Performing Arts
Festival Association, I am pleased to welcome audiences, participants and
adjudicators to the 2017 Victoria Performing Arts Festival. This is the 90th
year of Festival, a measure of its success in the performing arts community in
Greater Victoria. The Festival features over 9000 performers who all benefit
from performing at some 10 venues in front of an audience and being
adjudicated by experts in their respective disciplines. The Festival also
provides a platform for progression of our registrants to the Provincial and
National Festivals, and if history is any indication, their achievements on
those stages are impressive. Those results provide impetus to our many
volunteers and the Board.
This year, Festival begins on April 3 and concludes on May 13, 2017. During that period of our
Program, adjudicated sessions will take place in disciplines such as dance, speech arts, voice, choral,
bands, and instruments ranging from piano, guitar, woodwinds, brass and strings. There are also 12
Highlight Concerts, concluding with the Roberto and Mary Wood Scholarship Concert on May 13th.
The Festival owes its success over the years to numerous dedicated persons, some of whom have been
active in various capacities for over 40 years, a tribute to their love of the performing arts. There are
over 300 volunteers, 28 Section Heads with their staff in each discipline, and our Board members.
Holding all of this together is our Office Administrator Lynne Picard. Everyone works very hard and
planning began immediately after the 2016 Festival.
Festival relies on our loyal and generous donors who sustain us. They are comprised of individual
donors, sponsors, foundations and granting agencies. They are listed elsewhere in this Program. We are
grateful for their support for the arts. We invite you to join us at the Highlight Concerts where the talent
being presented is celebrated.
As President, I wish to thank all those who encourage and support our initiatives. To our performers
during Festival 2017, I wish you every success.
John Sterk, President

Donald Sales
Trained as a classical dancer at the June Runyon School of Ballet in Oklahoma and the Dance Theater of
Harlem School, Donald joined the Dance Theater of Harlem Company in 2001. He distinguished himself
by making a strong impression on the Artistic Director, Arthur Mitchell, which lead to roles beyond the
corps de ballet of which he was a member. In 2004 he joined Ballet British Columbia as a corps dancer
and was promoted to soloist a year later. From 2005 on, while under the directorship of John Alleyne
(and more recently Emily Molnar), he became one of Ballet BC’s “go to” guys when a new creation was
being made, which not only helped to develop his confidence as a dancer but also sparked a
choreographic yearning. Grateful to have worked with a multitude of national and international
choreographers such as Emily Molnar, Aszure Barton, Kevin O’day, Crystal Pite, William Forsythe, Jiri
Kylian and others. Donald has been nurturing his artistic growth by creating such work such as gR33N,
his first full length work in 2014 which premiered at the 2014 Chutzpah Festival for his company,
Project20. Donald is also an accomplished actor and choreographer for film and television. Recent
credits include the TV series Frequency, Impastor, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Zoo, as well as
choreography for the film Seeds of Yesterday.

Natasha Gorrie
Natasha Gorrie has grown up in the hip hop dance scene since a young age. Her first brush with hip hop
dance was when her mother taught her how to do the running man in the living room of their home.
Natasha’s mother was a self taught freestyle dancer, with a huge passion for new jack swing dancing.
Natasha began training at her mother’s dance studio at the age of 8, and that studio pioneered hip hop
choreography in the Vancouver’s lower mainland. Ever since then, Natasha has had a love for the
fundamentals of hip hop and funk styles. To round out her training, Natasha also trained in ballet, jazz,
musical theatre and tap.
Natasha is a rare talent that has managed to excel in the professional dance industry, while building a
well-known and respected reputation in the underground dance community across Canada, and around
the world. As a professional dancer, her credits include She’s The Man, Another Cinderella Story, Hellcats,
The Magicians and So You Think You Can Dance Canada, music videos for DJ Tiesto and Lady Sovereign,
and commercials for Campbell’s Soup, Reebok and Nestle Water. As a freestyler, she has battled around
the world and has won numerous titles, and has taught and judged in India, Netherlands, Thailand,
Greece, China and the USA.
Natasha is co-founder of the powerhouse female crew “Diamonds In The Rough” based out of Vancouver.
As a group, they have travelled throughout the USA and Canada performing and training. She also owns
her own hip hop freestyle training company in Vancouver. Her newest foray into the world of
choreography has already lead to projects with Monsters of Dance, as well as music videos for Canadian
musical artist Son Real.
Natasha loves to freestyle and feels at home in a battle. She is passionate about training and is constantly
broadening her vocabulary in dance. Knowledge is key.
