Invertebrates - Granite School District

The third unit we are covering in science is on invertebrates. Invertebrates are animals without a
backbone. We will break these groups up into 7 groups.
INSECTS
All insects are invertebrates (no
backbone)
All insects have 3 body parts
All insects have 6 legs.
Only insects have wings, but not all
do.
Some insects have antenna
ARACHNID
All arachnids are invertebrates (no backbone)
All arachnids have 2 body parts
All arachnids have 8 legs.
There are 3 types of arachnids
Spiders
Scorpions
Ticks
Worms
Have one body sections.
Have no legs.
Crustaceans
Have a hard shell.
Live in the water.
Mollusk
Called mouth/foot
Might have a hard shell or no shell
ECHINODERM
If I lose a leg it will grow back.
I use to be called a star fish, but I am not a fish.
ANTHOZOA
I look like a plant but I am really lots of little animals living together to make a big structure.
I am sometimes called coral.

A way to observe invertebrate is go to the Aquarium and look at them in the water tanks or land tanks.
You can also visit the Zoo and the small animal building. When you see an invertebrate point it out and
talk to your student about it, count the legs, does it have wings etc.
