Cell Processes Tiered Activity Goals/Standards: Pre-assessment/Formative Assessment: S7L2a. Explain that cells take in nutrients in order to grow and divide and to make needed materials. After learning the ten cell processes, students will complete the Cell Processes Summarizer. If a student gets 7-10 of the processes correct, he/she should be placed in Tier 2. If a student gets less than 6 or less cell processes correct, he/she should be placed in Tier 1. Introduction: Based on the Cell Processes Summarizer, students will be placed into small groups of 2-3 for both Tier 1 and Tier 2. The number of groups in both tiers will vary based on class size and student performance on the Cell Processes Summarizer. Both tiers will use the Cell Processes Review Cards to play a game on the cell processes. Tier 2 groups will play a game that requires higher order thinking skills. Tier 1: Tier 2: If a student gets less than 6 or less cell processes correct on the Cell Processes Summarizer, he/she will be placed in a small group of 2-3 other students who also received less than 7 cell processes correct. Using the Cell Processes Review Cards, the students will play Kaboom to reinforce the cell processes and check their answers with a key. If a student gets 7-10 cell processes correct on the Cell Processes Summarizer, he/she will be placed in a small group of 2-3 other students who also received 710 cell processes correct. Using the Cell Processes Review Cards, the students will play “It’s in the Bag” or “Terminoes” to reinforce the cell processes and check their answers with a key. Read the directions for “It’s in the Bag” and “Terminoes” on the review cards sheet. Tier 3: Closure/Assessment: Students will be given the Cell Processes Summarizer again to test their knowledge of the cell processes. Adapted from Jessica Hockett, 2009
