David Matthews
David Matthews is the son of David Matthews, Sr. and Polly Matthews (deceased). He has
one sister, Tamera Matthews Brown. Both of David’s parents bowled when he was a child. His
mother bowled only for a short time and his father continued later in life, but no longer bowls.
David started bowling in 1974 as a hobby never thinking that it would turn into a way of life.
He started bowing in a Junior League Program at the Ayers Bowling Lanes where he bowled
until 1979. As he became more advanced, he decided to move up to the Adult Leagues.
Bowling at all of the surrounding area bowling lanes, David not only participated in local
leagues, but in any and all of the tournaments such as: city, state, 700 Club, ABC/USBC
Nationals, and multiple PBA Regional tournaments. During all of this time of bowling
competitively and almost non-stop, he developed a wrist injury which ended his career in 2002.
As David was in retirement from bowling, he had no idea that it was only to be temporary.
In the fall of 2009. He was approached by a co-worker to help finish out a league, so he decided
to give it another try. David bowled the summer league that year intending to hang it up after
the league finished. During the summer league David rolled a 300 game and 783 series at
Woodlawn. Having bowled many honor scores in his career, this 300 was different because it
was after a lengthy layoff. Needless to say, that summer was not the last season for David.
David has had many bowling achievements, but not limited to: 299/300 game, top five
averages for four years, two VUSBC City Championships, and many other awards in the city
tournaments.
When asked what he thought his biggest accomplishment, achievement, or service was,
David said that having the honor of being inducted in two Hall of Fames in two different cities
and winning two city championships in Victoria.
What David likes best about bowling is having the pleasure of sharing great times, laughs,
rolling great scores, being honored, but most of all the making some of the best lifelong friends.
David’s fondest moment during all the years of bowling, is the day he shot a 300 game while
bowling the TCBA (travel league) at Island Bowl in Corpus Christi. Not only was this a perfect
game, but it was the only honor score that his Dad witnessed and was one of his teammates.
David was elected to the VUSBC Board of Directors in 2010, having served on many
committees and currently is the Vice-President of the VUSBC.
David Matthews, the Victoria USBC Hall of Fame Committee and entire bowling association
welcomes you as a new member of our local Hall of Fame for your bowling achievements.
Congratulations.
Steve Zeplin
Steve Zeplin was born and raised in Victoria, and bowled at all four Bowling Centers that
were in Victoria. He’s been bowling for fifty years. Recreational bowling sparked his interest at
the age of 12 and he began his league bowling at the age of 18. He bowled in leagues at Palace
Bowling Lanes, Victoria Lanes, and Woodlawn Bowling Lanes. As these closed over the years he
continued to bowl at Century Lanes and at one time bowling in four leagues. Bowling plays a
big part in Steve’s life and besides the bowling, he really enjoys the comradery and competition
as well as occasionally beating specific other “good” bowlers.
Steve’s mother, Alice Zeplin bowled many years, while his father, Harry (deceased) bowled
several years on the initial Carbide league. Soon after Steve married Debby, his wife of 43
years. She began bowling too since he was an avid bowler. Debby had to give up bowling in
2004 after a motor vehicle accident ended her bowling career. She stills supports Steve in his
bowling, tournaments, and other endeavors.
Debby and Steve have two children, Jason and Jaimye. They both bowled as youth bowlers
and as adult bowlers. Both children were recipients of scholarships for the VUSBC. Jason and
his wife Rachel, have one son, Nash James (6 months), and live in Corpus Christi. Jaimye and
her husband Charles Aiken, have two children, Laney (9 yrs.) and Connor (5 yrs.) and live in
Victoria. Jaimye Zeplin and Charles Aiken bowled in the Texas State Youth Bowling Tournament
in 1996, on the same team and won 2nd place in doubles. Now 20 years later, they are married.
They are just one big bowling family.
Steve’s biggest accomplishment is bowling an 826 series in 2003. He also has had many
other award scores including a 300 game in 2003. Steve has also ranked in the top ten averages
several years and has placed in the city tournament numerous times.
Steve Zeplin, the Victoria USBC Hall of Fame Committee and entire bowling association
welcomes you as a new member of our local Hall of Fame for your bowling achievements.
Congratulations.
