The ethos of the art department is to provides a visually stimulating atmosphere for students to feast their eyes and
imaginations upon.
We provide the students with the opportunities to learn independently with support and guidance, questioning and
discussion and allowing investigations and experimentations with materials and techniques, encouraging all to enjoy
and achieve.
In art we have a responsibility to contribute to the broader education of the students and indeed have great opportunity to develop the spiritual, moral, social and cultural aspects of art.
We have high expectations and try hard to empower the students to have positive pro-active attitudes, values and
patterns of behaviour.
The key stage 3 syllabus runs over two years and is organised into six project themes in preparation for the GCSE
course beginning in year 9.
We are currently work to the OCR syllabus for GCSE with the examination process beginning in January of year 11.
Both key stage 3 and key stage 4 are mixed ability groupings.
Art and design is supported by creative and effective use of ICT. Students are given the opportunities to apply and
develop their ICT capabilities through the use of ICT tools to support their learning. We encourage students to take
ownership over their work and use their initiative in their learning by further developing their artwork and use ICT
equipment and software outside of the lessons.
General Information: GCSE Art & Design is made up of two units: a 45hr controlled assessment (worth 60%), and a
10 hour Set Task (worth 40%).
The controlled assessment is a portfolio of work that the students will build during the first 16 months of the course.
This work is based on observational studies, exploration of media and materials, contextual studies and making a
personal response to the theme studied.
Essential Equipment: A2 art folder, drawing pencil, fineliner, ruler, rubber, sharpener, colouring pencils.
Homework: Artists research, creative tasks and independent study inspired by the project titles, teacher assessment,
self reflection and peer assessment.

January-February ‘Expression and Illustration’
Instead of representing what the eye sees, students will
develop work in which they express their feelings about
an image or object. Exploration of distortion,
exaggeration of shapes, changing natural scale, mood and
heightening colour are some ways in which pupils will be
encouraged to explore expressionism.
Historical context brings us to exploring the work of
Munch, Bacon, Fauvists and Nolde.
Illustration work develops through making visual
interpretation of songs/poems into 2D and 3D works
inspired by the knowledge of expressionism and
influenced by illustration artists.
