2017 Ning Directions

ASTE 2017 Ning Network
Ning is a social networking site where groups of people can interact in a number of
ways, including forums, photos, videos, and other options as the site expands. Ning
also uses a mobile interface when accessed with a mobile device. If you access our
Ning on a mobile device, you will automatically be shown mobile-optimized content.
The first page that comes up will be Activity on the site. From there you can access
the Blog (where I will post announcements), Discussions, and Photos uploaded by our
network members.
Most browsers will work just fine with our Ning Network. Browsers wholeheartedly
recommended by Ning include Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Internet Explorer. If you
use a browser not in this list and find that some of the features of the network do
not work correctly, switch to one of the recommended browsers.
Joining Ning is FREE, although you will see ads on the network. You should NOT
have to enter a charge card number. One year, 2 participants mistakenly did that,
so be very careful with what you agree to! If you choose to purchase an option to
create your own network, the three different plans are described at
http://www.ning.com/compareplans.
To join the ASTE 2017 Ning, visit the following URL: http://inspiredimpact.ning.com
If you are already a member of another Ning, sign in (right sidebar). If you have
not previously joined a Ning, use the Sign Up link (right sidebar) If you opt to Sign
Up, you’ll see a screen similar to this:
You will be asked to complete a profile so that other ASTE 2017 members can learn
a little more about you. You’ll also have the opportunity to upload a photo or an
avatar if you choose. But if you opt to not do this, I get to choose the image next
to your name J
After you’ve completed the sign-in process, you will receive notice that your
membership to this Ning is pending approval. Especially during and right after the
conference, I will be closely monitoring so I can approve membership requests
quickly. Since this is a public Ning, approving memberships is the best way I can
control spammers from getting in to our network.
Once I approve your membership, you will receive an email notification. Use the
links within that email to set up your account profile. Add a profile picture … or I
get to choose the default picture. Also, take a look through your settings (link is on
the right side), particularly your email notification preferences. It’s a good idea to
at least check the box to receive an email when you receive “A message from ASTE
2016 Credit Course”. If you are not able to complete setting up your profile and/or
your settings, you can return to it later by clicking on the My Page tab.
Now that you have personalized your account, you’ll want to get started with the
course, click the Forum tab in the menu across the top.
The Forum is divided into categories, which are listed down the left side of the
screen. There is a category for each ASTE Network as well as other topics you may
want to use. Here you’ll either start a discussion or respond to someone else’s
discussion. When starting a discussion, please use a descriptive title, and when
responding, please do not begin a new discussion thread; simply hit Reply.
Your Required Readings are found in the Course Articles category.
Your Required Online Discussions will happen in the categories with an asterisk at
the beginning. Please note that any post you make in the categories that do not
have an asterisk, although welcome, do not count toward your required online
discussions.
Articles to read are available in the Course Articles category, each under their
own Discussion. When you choose the Course Articles category, it should look
similar to this:
This is where you will discuss the articles. Click on the Course Articles title and
then choose an Article Discussion to which you’ll either start a discussion or
respond to someone else’s discussion. When starting a discussion, please use a
descriptive title, and when responding, please do not begin a new discussion
thread; simply hit Reply.
You will be able to see who started a thread, how many replies there have been,
who replied last, and how long ago.
You are free to delete your own posts, but not those belonging to anyone else.
Notice that there is a category for Ning-related tips, tricks, and troubles! You
can use this category to get help or email me. [email protected]
I have found it very convenient to “Follow” discussion threads. If you click the
Follow option at the bottom, you will receive an email when someone posts or replies
to that particular discussion. You will need to do this for each discussion you want to
follow with email notifications.
Feel free to upload Photos and Videos to our ASTE 2017 Ning Network!! They may
be photos & videos you take at ASTE or photos of your home, school, interests, or
family. Learning a little more about you helps our connections online. You may even
want to create a little annotated slideshow to post in videos. I would love that!
Watch for notices from me on the Main Page of the Ning Network (in the Blog
section under the photos). I will also broadcast messages via email. Be sure you
regularly check the email account you use to sign up for your Ning account. Also,
make sure you can receive emails from my address. The .biz part of it sometimes
gets hung up in people’s filters.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me via any of the contact methods listed in my
signature if you have any concerns or questions. I’ll be glad to help and I do try to
address your questions and/or concerns within 24 hours.
