Message from Archbishop Hart
Cardinal Pell founded the Melbourne session of the
Institute with Bishop Fisher as first Director, on a deep
spiritual life, a total commitment to principles which
underpin sacramental, Christian family life. It was my
privilege to be Archbishop at the time of the Opening
of the Institute.

Pope John Paul II said in 1995: “This is what man needs
today; he is often unable to be silent for fear of meeting
himself, of feeling the emptiness that asks itself about
the meaning; man who deafens himself with noise. All,
believers and non-believers alike, need to learn a silence
that allows the Other to speak when and how He
wishes and allows us to understand His words”.
In July 2001 Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, President
of the Pontifical Council for the Family, formally
opened and blessed the newest of ten campuses
worldwide of the John Paul II Institute for Marriage
and Family at the Thomas Carr Centre in Melbourne.
The inspiration of Pope John Paul in founding the
Institute was to place an examination of the central
issues affecting marriage and the family at the heart
of the Church’s work so that the family, the domestic
church, might occupy its rightful place in the teaching
of the Gospel.
In an increasingly complex world, where the principles
which underpin the gift of life and the dignity of the
human person are often cast aside by the pragmatism
of politicians or the inroads of secularism, it is my
belief that the Institute has a God-given task to
perform. Already the Institute’s influence on moral
theology has been shown and its work is extending
further to philosophy and theology itself.

Coming from the basis of regular daily prayer and
sacramental life is a thirst for truth, faithfulness to
the Magisterium and readiness to make the extra
effort involved in rigorous study which has become
the characteristic ethos of the Institute. 2005 brought
the election of Benedict XVI, who shares John Paul
II’s vision for the sacredness of the human person and
dignity of marriage and family life. In his encyclical
Deus Caritas Est, Pope Benedict explains that real love
“seeks the good of the beloved” and through this selfgiving love we can come to discover Christ. Since the
election of Pope Francis in 2013 we have seen a further
continuity in papal teaching with Francis’s affirmation
of marriage as an “icon of God’s love for us”.
Every year, in addition to the dedicated work of the
regular members of staff, visiting lecturers come from
interstate and overseas to conduct intensive courses in
a wide variety of subjects. Their contributions guarantee
that the students have access to the very best of recent
Catholic scholarship from universities around the
world. The student body itself is international. The
first graduate of the Institute, Salesio Lui, was from the
Island of Tokelau. Other students come from other parts
of the Pacific and South East Asia, as well as Canada,
England and France.
I am immensely proud of the Institute’s achievements.
I commend the 2014 Scholarly Portfolio to your attention.
