RECOMMENDATION
Adopt the proclamation honoring Reverend Doctor Ambrose Carroll, Senior Pastor of
the Church by the Side of the Road, for his vast array of achievements, including his
National Campaign, “Green the Church.”
BACKGROUND
Reverend Doctor Ambrose Carroll first received his high school diploma in 1987 from
Oakland High School. He then went on to receive an undergraduate degree from the
Florida Memorial College, a Master’s of Divinity from Morehouse School of Religion, a
Doctor’s of Divinity from the United Theological Seminary and a Master’s in Business
Administration from the Golden State University in San Francisco.
Reverend Doctor Carroll has worked diligently throughout his career to follow in the
footsteps of the historical Black Church by invoking historical figures such as Rev.
Hiram Rhodes Revels of the AME church who fought for the rights of freedmen after the
Civil War, leaders of the NAACP, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Doctor Carroll has worked in the creation of the national campaign, Green the Church,
which aims to reach out to communities of color and also aims to build green and
efficient church buildings as well as the spread of Ecology Theology. His campaign has
been recognized in the American Progress article, “Sixteen Faith Leaders to Watch in
2016,” as well as having been featured in a Jet Magazine article.

Proclamation to honor the Senior Pastor of the Church by the Side of the
Road, Reverend Doctor Ambrose Carroll for his achievements and continuous
work within the community.
Whereas, Reverend Doctor Ambrose Carroll, Sr. is a highly educated theologian having
received an undergraduate degree from Florida Memorial College, a Master’s of
Divinity from Morehouse School of Religion, a Doctor of Divinity from United
Theological Seminary and an MBA from Golden Gate University.
Whereas, Reverend Doctor Carroll now serves as the Senior Pastor at the Church by The Side
of the Road in the city of Berkeley.
Whereas, Reverend Doctor Carroll combines theology and ecology, has expanded his work by
creating the “Green the Church” National Campaign, and has advocated for the
creation of green and efficient Church buildings.
Whereas, The “Green the Church” campaign has recently been featured in a Jet Magazine
article (“Black Ministers Team Up to Green the Church”)
Whereas, The “Green the Church” campaign was honored in the American Progress Article,
“16 Faith Leaders to Watch in 2016.”
Whereas, Alongside the U.S. Green Building Council, the Green the Church campaign aims to
mobilize over one thousand African American Churches to advance ecology
theology.
Whereas, The “Green the Church” campaign aims to address the disproportionate harm that
communities of color and low-income individuals face due to the effects of climate
change.
Whereas, Reverend Doctor Carroll serves as an active editor for the Huffington Post where he
expresses his concerns for prevalent environmental issues in articles such as “No
Climate Justice, No Peace.”
Therefore be it Proclaimed, that the City of Berkeley honors Reverend Doctor Ambrose
Carroll and Green the Church.
