BEDFORD Wednesday, May 15/10 a.m. Puppet Show Asian Heritage Month Grades P-2 In honour of Asian Heritage Month, your students will be treated to a Library-adapted puppet show called Chopsticks the Mouse & the Chinese Dragon, a magical tale of friendship between Chopsticks the Mouse and a wooden Chinese dragon. Based on the book, Chopsticks by Jon Berkeley. KESHEN GOODMAN Wednesday, May 22/10-11:30 a.m. Grades P-2 Gus the Tortoise Takes a Walk is a new children's picture book written by Erin Arsenault and illustrated by Richard Rudnicki. Gus is the tortoise in residence at the Museum of Natural History in Halifax. One day, as museum workers prepare a new house for Gus, he is mistakenly taken outside in a box. He wakes up and finds himself in the great outdoors, with delicious dandelions and grass tempting his taste buds. Gus then follows his nose on a walk in the grounds that surround the museum. As you follow Gus on his walk you will recognize other Halifax landmarks in the story and in the bright and vivid illustrations. AUTHOR Erin Arsenault lives in Halifax with her daughter, Sophie. They enjoy visiting their friend Gus the Tortoise together. Erin is the winner of the 2008 Word on the Street "Pitch the Publisher" event (children/YA fiction). Gus the Tortoise Takes a Walk is her first book. ALDERNEY GATE Thursday, May 23/10 a.m. Page 2 May/June 2013 Go! Bon Voyage! W e need your help to spread the word about the TD Summer Reading Club. Here's what you can do: Join the Club! Registration is free and begins on June 25 at all branches. 1. Welcome library staff to your classroom for a brief promotional visit. 2. Display the poster advertising the program in your classroom. Ready For September As educators, you work all year to guide your pupils' reading by developing their enjoyment of books. Each summer, the TD Summer Reading Club encourages children 12 and under to read as a means to make it easier for them to go back to school in September. The Club is designed to support you in your efforts by consolidating and improving children's acquired reading skills during the summer months. Travel Theme This year's travel theme encourages children to journey to places near and far, from the backyard to other worlds—by whatever means they can imagine—and experience new tastes, friends, and excitement along the way. Incentives When children register for this free, nation-wide bilingual program at their local library, they will receive a passport and a pre-reading activity book or school-age magazine. As they continue reading over the summer, they will collect delightful stickers to encourage continued reading. The stickers will interact with the passport and contain secret codes revealing bonus website content. There will also be draws for five Grand Prizes designed to appeal to various ages. Here are some of the comments we received from teachers about our program in past years: "I have viewed firsthand the progress and enthusiasm generated by the program. It gives children something valuable to do on their vacation and gives families a place to spend quality time with their kids." "The program is a great way to reach families.... This promotes and encourages families to maintain their reading over the summer." "I think the summer reading program is extremely useful. The prizes are a great incentive." 3. Distribute the flyers inviting children to join the program to each child. 4. Encourage parents to register their child by using the stickers provided in your package on report card envelopes. 5. Promote the program to your class. 6. Bookmark the Kids @ the Library page on your classroom computer. www.halifaxpubliclibraries.ca/kids 7. Remind students that registration begins Tuesday, June 25th, and that all branches will have a kick-off event.
