PRESIDENT’S CORNER
President’s Report– November 2014
I would like to thank the members of MGMS for their vote of confidence in me to
take over the important role as president. As stated at the AGM, I am fully aware
that I have some very big shoes to fill and hope I can perform this task satisfactorily. I am also aware that nobody can satisfy everybody’s expectations all of the
time, but will do my best with the help of the Management Committee to do what
is best for the Shed at all times.
The achievements of Brian Wheeler and his committee over the past 5 years
have been nothing short of incredible. Under Brian’s stewardship the MGMS has
gone from the idea of a few men to a purpose-built-building of over 500 square
metres and a membership of around 230+, achieved the respect of all levels of government and the admiration (and a little bit of envy) of all other sheds in Australia. We must also recognise the amazing efforts
of Brian’s wife, Ngari. This would not have all happened without her.
You have to be on the inside of the organisation to know just how much effort has gone into the structuring of procedures to ensure the efficient and safe operations of the shed.
Now it is on to the next phase – consolidation to ensure the long-term viability of the Shed. We have a
tremendous group of hard-working men who, I am sure, will achieve this aim.
“The Great Southeast visit and Brisbane on Parade”
For those who missed the airing of the segment on the MGMS John has produced a few copies if you
wish to have a look. We will try to have a showing of this program at the December meeting.
Thanks again to those members who participated in this parade. The “Brisbane” sign has featured prominently in many news reports this month and it looks fantastic – particularly the “E”.
Christmas Parties
Those who have not yet entered their names on the participation sheets for these functions on 1st and 8th
December, and who wish to attend, please register and pay ASAP as we need to finalise catering requirements. The cut-off dates for registration and payment are 21st Nov and 28th Nov respectively. The
members-only function at the showgrounds should be full of fun and frivolity. The one on Dec 8th for members and wives/partners at the Sunnybank Sports Club should also be a great day but a little more subdued. I urge you to join your fellow shedders at these functions.
Christmas Break
The shed will be closing on Friday 19th Dec until Tuesday 3rd Feb 2015 for normal operations. We start
with the Social Meeting on Monday 2nd Feb. However, it will be manned on Wednesdays by John Wicks
from 8am to 1pm as per the calendar until our full re-opening.
I take this opportunity to wish all Shedders and their families as safe and happy Christmas and a prosperous and fulfilling New Year.
Keep on Shedding
Murray Rogash
President

Diabetes is when the pancreas
does not produce sufficient insulin.
Insulin is an integral chemical in the body as it controls
the glucose level.
Some causes that contribute to diabetes II are: overweight (excess fat around the waistline in particular as
this makes the pancreas work harder), smoking and excessive alcohol are also contributors.

MT GRAVATT MEN’S SHED WELFARE REPORT November 2014
It is hard to comprehend that 2014 has almost come to an end. The year of 2014 has been with many
challenges, but also with rewards. I wish to personally thank all members that have worked tirelessly in
the shed each week and sometimes five days each week. It has been a privilege to work in our Men’s
Shed office one day each with many members both office and workshop. In doing so I have enjoyed
fellowship and friendship. With the shed extension well underway and with an anticipation it will be completed early in the new year it will enhance the activities that can be offered to our members.
A number of our members are in hospital or in rehabilitation at home. It has been with sadness that six
of our prominent members passed away during the last twelve months. Your welfare committee will continue to contact members who are in Hospital, rehabilitation at home or have special needs. If you are
sick or you know a member who is in hospital or sick at home please advise your welfare committee to
enable us to be in touch with you, visit you in hospital or at home.
I will possibly meet up with many members at our 1st and 8th December 2014 Christmas Breakup parties.
I wish to extend the complements of the season to all members and trust that you will have a wellearned break ready for an exceptional 2015.

: If you are going to cash in on the computer/laptop/tablet
craze during the crazy Christmas sale rush, please, think through
and write down your reasons for wishing to purchase the items. Then speak with others about
your ideas/needs then look through the offerings for features: CPU type, RAM (min 4GB for 64
bit operating system is reasonable for future proofing), screen size and windows 8.1 installed as
well as price. What programs do you need? If you are offered a longer guarantee just judge it
against the PDS & price as many are not worth the extra dollars.
