Who are Plains Art Guides?
Plains Art Guides are volunteer docents who lead gallery experiences for youth and adult
groups. They work closely with education staff and teaching artists as part of this work, which is
a year-round commitment. The group meets the second Tuesday of each month from 8:3010:30 a.m. from October-May for behind-the-scenes tours with curators, interactive teaching
technique sessions with education staff, and discussions about the work of the Museum. For
new Plains Art Guides accepted into this program, there will be additional training sessions for
the first three months. Each year, the group takes a day trip to an art institution in the region,
serving as a professional development opportunity for the volunteers and staff. An art history
degree is not required; we seek volunteer docents who have a desire to communicate the
power of art to others. The Museum highly values the work of the volunteer docents, and we
look at them as partners in the community who play an important role in fulfilling our mission:
“connecting art, artists, and audiences to foster creative, resilient, and welcoming
communities.”
