Welcome to another exciting year at Hammond Middle
School! The PTA already has several great events underway for the students. We hope you can
join us as we plan more events throughout the year. The next PTA General Meeting will be held
in the Media Center at 6:30pm on Tuesday, September 8, 2015. See you there!
Back To School Night
The PTA will hold a General Meeting during Back To School Night on Thursday, September 10
at 6:30pm. Please stop by the PTA table and say hello to the volunteers.
1. Join the PTA – we will be collecting membership forms and we’ll have extra forms if you
need one. Membership only costs $15 (Individual) or $25 (Family). This is a major
source of our funds for the year. Membership forms are available on the PTA website:

2. Learn about Shopping Benefits and Box Tops Rewards. Learn how you can register your
grocery and Target cards to generate additional funds for the school. No extra effort or
money required. Clip your Box Tops for student prizes and rewards for the school.
3. Pick up a T-shirt, sweatpants or a sweatshirt at our Spirit Wear table.
Tissues and Hand Sanitizer
Help keep the common cold out of the classrooms. Please donate tissues and hand sanitizers
during Back to School Night. Donation boxes will be available at the PTA Membership table.
After Back to School Night, donations can be dropped off in the front office. Thank you for
helping to keep our children healthy!
HMS Directory
The HMS PTA produces a student directory each year for the use of HMS students and their
families. The directory includes information about HMS staff and lists students in alphabetical
order by grade. If you would like your child(ren) to be included in the directory, please follow
the directions below to enter your information online by Friday, September 25, 2015. The
website for submission is http://www.myschooldirectory.com/ and the school code word is
HMSVIKINGS. Please enter your information one time per family unless you have a dual
family situation. Students with dual family situations can be listed with both sets of
parent/guardian information. Once you make your submission, you will receive a confirmation
email from webmaster subject line: Automated Response from MySchoolDirectory.com. This
email will confirm the information exactly as you entered it. If you find there is a mistake with
the entry, please email Tina Addo at [email protected] with your changes rather than
resubmitting your information. This eliminates duplicates and assists in proofreading. The
directory will be distributed to Hammond Middle School students and staff in mid-October.
Staff Appreciation News
HMS PTA will again be hosting monthly staff appreciation events this year. Our second staff
appreciation event, “Back-to-School Night Treat,” is scheduled for Thursday, Sept 10th, with setup starting at 5:30pm. We will provide staff members with sweet and salty treats. To contribute,

Volunteers Needed!
The HMS PTA has the following vacancies:
Staff Appreciation Co-Chair
Staff Appreciation is looking for a co-chair to help plan and execute monthly staff
appreciation events. If you enjoy planning and implementing fun and memorable events
for the HMS Staff, this is the position for you!
Talent Show Chair
HMS has so many talented students…we would hate to miss the opportunity to showcase
them in a Talent Show. Please volunteer to help stage a memorable event that showcases
the many talents of the HMS students.
Gift Card Co-Chair
HMS raised more than $750 last year through the Gift Card Fundraiser. This position has
a short timeframe (November) and only requires some paperwork/time at home (day or
evening). The current chairperson (Pat Johnson) will be moving to high school next year
and we need someone to take over this profitable position.

Hearing and Vision Screening Volunteers Needed!
Hearing and Vision Screening will be at HMS on Tuesday, October 13, 2015. Howard County
Health Department will screen all eighth grade students, any new students who have no previous
Hearing and Vision Record, and any referrals from parents or teachers. We need 3-4 parent
volunteers to help with the screening in the morning and 3-4 volunteers in the afternoon.

Re-Screening for Hearing and Vision will be on Wednesday,
October 28, 2015. We will need 2 parent volunteers to escort students to and from the screening
in the morning (8:15am - 12:30pm). To volunteer with the Hearing and Vision Screening, please

Box Tops Reminder! Friday, September 18th Could Be Your Lucky Day!
September 18th is the last day for all HMS students to participate in the Box Tops for Education
Back to School Contest. Be sure to send in at least 15 valid Box Tops in a sealed zipper baggie
or envelope labeled with the student's name, grade and first period teacher. One student from
each grade will win a FREE movie pass (selected from the participating students who bring in at
least 15 valid Box Tops.) In addition, the student from each grade who brings in the most Box
Tops will win a FREE iTunes gift card! It's not too late to check your cabinets for products with
