In this Twenty Third Sunday of Ordinary Time, the Church celebrates the spirit of the commitment and selfsacrifice of Christ. Jesus warns that people cannot share his vision and his mission unless they have a very loose hold on their own possessions. Without a real spirit of detachment we cannot become full disciples of Christ. Many people find it difficult to comprehend these words of Jesus " If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother wife and children, brothers and sisters and his own life, he can't be my disciple" (Lk 14: 26). It is important that we grasp well the true meaning of his words. In Aramaic, the verb "to hate" is often used to mean "love less". We find in the Gospel of Matthew, “whoever loves father and mother more than me, whoever loves his son or daughter more than me is not worth of me". (Mt. 10:37) The real aim of any person's life is to enter into God's kingdom. It is as though Jesus says, you can't be my disciple if you think that possessions, family, or even life are more important than to belong to God's kingdom. In other words, you must be ready to lose possessions, family or even life if need be, rather than lose your place in the kingdom of God. Our following must not be half-hearted. We must weigh fully the implications of our decision to not allow any consideration to destroy our commitment to him. We must be ready to carry it through to the end. Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta In 1948, a young nun left the convent and walked into the slums of Calcutta answering a call to live among and serve "the poorest of the poor." She became an Indian citizen in 1947. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. Now nearly seven decades later, this beloved servant of God will be named a saint by Pope Francis on September 4, 2016. Shortly after she died in 1997, St. John Paul II waived the usual five-year waiting period and allowed the opening of the process to declare her sainthood. She was beatified in 2003. Mother Teresa was widely known as a living saint as she ministered to the sick and the dying in some of the poorest neighborhoods in the world. Although some people criticized her for not also challenging the injustices that kept so many people so poor and abandoned, her simple service touched the hearts of millions of people of all faiths. May God help us follow her example of love, mercy and service! Saint Mother Teresa, pray for us! Fr. John Francis ST. NICK’S 100th ANNIVERSARY In 1916, plans were made to start a parish in the area of the Queensboro Hospital for Communicable Diseases, which is the location of Queens General Medical Center. Property was purchased in January of 1917 and a church was built on the corner of Parsons Blvd. and Union Turnpike by October of that same year. The area and the parish have developed into a diversified community with people of many different languages and cultures. This is St. Nick’s today! In order to celebrate our 100th Anniversary as a parish community, a different event has been planned each month to bring us together to celebrate, to pray and to work.
