A total 21 municipalities responded to dues letter, higher than ever received. Updated mailing list, have gotten lots of response. b. A total of $1,575 in dues has come in. c. No response yet from: City of Saline, Barton Hills among others. 4. Task Force Updates a. Product Stewardship Initiatives I. II. Dan: Workshop Webinar on illegal dumping in tars, and illegal markets. Using tires in asphalt, etc. Sept 10 tentative date. Webinars usually last about an hour. Contact Dan if interested in participating in this or future Webinars. Page 2 of 4 b. Master Composting i. Chris: Have posted class schedule on Facebook with link to enrollment. Starts on Sept 30, goes for 7 weeks. ii. Pretty much same format as in past years. Except added worm bin workshop which is open to class members and public. Additional fee if a person wants to buy a personal worm bin. iii. Course will be managed by Project Grow, taught by Chris Simmons/Lisa Perschke/Nancy Stone and Course is funded through Washtenaw County Solid Waste budget. c. Washtenaw County Food Policy Council i. Noelle: Full Council – draft agenda to be presented at BOC working session meeting in September. ii. Food & Packaging Waste update: EPP Policy moving forward, group refocusing on Zero Waste Efforts I. Pierre: Interested in potential collaboration for Zero Waste events 5. Legislative Updates a. Dan: Reminds group of the PSI Legislative Updates: All states’ updates on PSI. Not much activity in Michigan (see list) b. Dan: Creation of Michigan Recycling Board, of which 7 of the 9 are MRC members. There is a focus here on tracking metrics in the state of Michigan, using Re-TRAC. i. Howard has experience with ReTRAC. Good experience with it for gathering & managing recycling data. 6. Local Community Updates a. Dan: Informs group of passing of Steve Chalker, former board member of Michigan Recycling Coalition and Vintage Tech Recyclers. b. Dan: Met with Rhonda Foxworth of BOAA, partnering for Sonic Lunch Series to promote Zero Waste and reduction of water bottle waste c. Dan: Thank You to St. Joe’s for donating the secondary containment to WC HHW operation for used oil storage. d. Dan: UM having 1-day pharmaceutical collection Tuesday Sept 18, School of Pharmacy, with yellow jug program. Page 3 of 4 e. Dan: DEA set National Pharm collection Sept 20th f. Dan: extended contract with Drug & Lab for pharmaceutical collection, with $1.05/lb pricing for another 1 year. g. Dan: ReCommunity serviced Mac’s & Klave’s Marinas for Shrink Wrap collection and recycling. Approximately 2000 lbs of shrink wrap diverted from the landfill. ReCommunity charged this year for service, unlike past years. h. Dan: Barton Hills recently started HHW curbside collection program. Purchased 150 bins for their 150 residents. Idea is to increase HHW diversions to protect Huron River Watershed. Each bin has informative educational packet. Barton Hills brings the materials to ZEEB Rd. i. Dan: 2 Clean Up Days: Saline on September 20th & EMU on October 18th j. Dan: WC hosted an exhibitor table @ Heritage Festival k. Dan: St Joe old Haab Clinic, old neighborhood health clinic converted to Dental Clinic, clear out. Diverted materials to Habitat for Humanity, Recycle Ann Arbor and also repurposed equipment for the hospital. Took other equipment to World Health Relief. Waste all very well handled and optimally diverted. Gauze, casting tape, lubricating jelly, Diabetes educational kits. i. Acquired sharps containers for low-income high volume sharps generators for pass out, to promote proper sharps disposal containment. l. Howard: Northfield Twp Clean-Up Day event was very successful. Report included in Current newspaper. Strong interest in holding same collection in 2015. Pierre: Next meeting September 25th at St. Joe Farm, Hoop Houses. 7. Adjourn (6:36pm). Page 4 of 4
