Summer Reading List 2013 Grades 2 — 8 will have a test on the marked (*****) book on September 27th. The second book (unmarked) requires a one-page report due on September 9th. Book report format is enclosed in the envelope. Grade 8 - A Separate Peace by John Knowles (*****) A Separate Peace is a harrowing and luminous parable of the dark side of adolescence. Gene is a lonely, introverted intellectual. Phineas is a handsome, taunting, daredevil athlete. What happens between the two friends one summer banishes the innocence of these boys and their world. Jacob Have I Loved by Katherine Paterson Louise has had enough of her twin sister. Caroline Is beautiful and talented. Growing up on a small Island of Rass in Chesapeake Bay. Caroline seems to do nothing but take from Louise. Louise only hope lies in seeking a place for herself beyond her sister's shadow. Grade 7 - Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos (*******) A 12 year old boy is grounded for the summer in the sleepy town of Norvelt and has to work for his elderly neighbor helping her write obituaries. It turns out Norvelt isn't as boring as Jack thought as he learns the absurd histories of the townspeople and even gets tangled up i possible murder mystery. Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson This is a gripping historical novel about the 1793 yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia. The book has been full researched and is based historical fact. Grade 6 - Skinny Bones by Barbara Park (*****) Alex is about to become a huge star in his TV commercial. Even if it is for cat food. It's still national television. His big plans for stardom go horribly wrong when his classmates think the commercial is the dumbest thing they have ever seen. Grade 6 - Henry Huggins by Beverly Cleary Henry is a small boy with knack for creating hilarious situations. Grade 5 - Friendship by Mildred Taylor In 1933 Mississippi, Cassie Logan and her brothers are warned never to go to the Wallace store. What the don't expect is to hear an elderly black man dare to call the white storekeeper by his first name. Any child knows that some things just aren't done. Grade 5 - The Best School Year Ever by Barbara Robinson (******) When anything goes wrong at Wilson Elementary School, From hexing of Bus Six to the mysterious disappearance of the kindergarten gerbil, it's sure to have Herdman behind it. Grade 4 - Be A Perfect Person in Just 3 Days by Stephen Manes Milo, tired of problems with his sister, parents, and classmates, finds a book in the library which promises to make him perfect in just three days. Grade 4 - Henry and Ribsy by Beverly Cleary (******) At last, Henry's father has promised to take him fishing, on one condition. Henry's dog, Ribsy, has been in all sorts of trouble lately, from running off with the neighbor's barbecue roast to stealing a policeman's lunch. To go on the fishing trip, Henry must keep Ribsy out of trouble Grade 3 - Anna, Grandpa and the Big Storm by Carla Stevens Anna's grandfather is bored with city life until he and Anna are stranded on the Third Avenue elevated subway train during the blizzard of 1888. Grade 3 - How To Eat Friend Worms by Thomas Rockwell (*******) Because of a bet, Billy is in the uncomfortable position of having to eat fifteen worms in fifteen days. At first Billy's problem is whether or not he can swallow the worm placed before him, even with a choice of condiments from peanut butter to horseradish. But later it looks as if Bill will win, and the challenge becomes getting to the worm to eat it. Grade 2 - Freckle Juice by Judy Blume Nicky has freckles.
