2013 Annual Report
Dear Members and Friends,
Fiscal year 2013 marked the first full year of operations for our new YMCA of the Seacoast branch in Portsmouth and
the YMCA of Strafford County in Rochester. We have made great strides and we are well on our way to meeting our
benchmarks for our three year plan.
The YMCA of the Seacoast has been fully renovated and has grown from 800 membership units to 1,300, a gain of
500 units. Y Day Camp Gundalow had a wonderful summer with record numbers of campers. The YMCA of Strafford
County has had stronger enrollment in child care than anticipated, but slower membership growth. We hired a Director
of Membership Sales this spring, which is producing strong results for both Y’s.
Our other four branches, Downtown Manchester, YMCA Allard Center, YMCA of Greater Londonderry and YMCA
Camping Services all surpassed our expectations with strong program and membership growth.
We completed both the Strafford and Londonderry capital campaigns and raised record levels of annual support during
our Reach Out for Youth campaigns for our association.
Two major initiatives were launched for our association to increase our capacity to build stronger communities. We
have successfully launched a formal board development process to further develop all of our Advisory Boards and
Board of Trustees. Attracting the top leadership in each community to advise and build support is a critical step in our
long term success.
In addition, we launched a strategic planning process that culminated in the trustees approving a new three year plan
in March of 2013. Exciting new initiatives are planned in our four program areas: youth development, healthy living,
family strengthening and social responsibility. We will see continued success by coupling these new initiatives with
four operating imperatives to build stronger staff and volunteer leadership, ensure a high quality member experience,
operate with fiscal discipline, and employ communications strategies to bring awareness to our cause. Our new plan
calls for raising $4,000,000 million dollars though a capital campaign to renovate and expand our facilities to ensure
we achieve robust growth and provide quality service in our six service areas.
We are so grateful for the hundreds of dedicated volunteers and staff who make it happen every day for children,
families, adults and seniors. With their support, over 18,000 people received free services or financial assistance, who
otherwise would not have had a Y experience.

Gina Annis
comes from a family of six children. She never thought she would have a child, but at age 43, her son
Scotty was born. Scotty was born with Golden Har Syndrome, a rare congenital defect characterized by incomplete development of
the ear, nose, soft palate, lip, and mandible. What’s more, at age 3, Scotty was identified as autistic.
In 2009, when Scotty was just 2 years old, Gina was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a mastectomy, followed by extensive
chemotherapy and radiation, she thought she had beat cancer. However, following her divorce in 2011, she began experiencing
terrible pain in her back and chest. At first she ignored it, but it got so intense that one day, she was rushed to the emergency
room. Four days later, she received
the heartbreaking news that she had
developed bone cancer.
After another round of treatments, Gina’s
cancer appeared to stabilize. Sadly, about
six months ago, her pain intensified, and
she knew the cancer was back with a
vengeance. A new round of chemo wasn’t
working, and in fact, the side effects of
the chemo were so harsh that her doctor
told her she had to cease treatment. As a
result, her advanced cancer is painful and
completely exhausting.
An illness like this would be daunting
for anyone. Nevertheless as a single
mom who is totally devoted to her only
child, Gina has a great outlook. She
wants, as she always has, for Scotty to
be participating in healthy activities,
enjoying time with other children and
positive mentors, and spending quality
time with her.
The Y has made Gina’s wishes for Scotty
possible. This summer, the Y provided
Scotty with 3 weeks of summer day camp
at the Allard Center’s Camp Halfmoon at
no cost. This allowed Gina to rest and
rejuvenate during the day, so that she
and Scotty could spend time after camp
having fun together.

SHE IS Y
Brianna McCuaig has participated in the Y’s gymnastics program since she was in first grade, after
she saw Shawn Johnson compete in the Olympics. Now, an eighth grader at Mountain View Middle School in Goffstown,
the statuesque athlete can brag that she has earned a medal in vaulting at the YMCA Nationals.
However, Brianna is anything but boastful. Rather, the soft spoken, poised, young woman lights up when she talks about
her team and her coaches, and the support they provide for one another. “I love the atmosphere here. All of us cheer each
other on. We never brag or compare ourselves to each other. We support one another to achieve our best. Brianna describes how she and her teammates feel like sisters in a family. She has met her best friends at the Y and they spend lots
of time together outside of the gym.
Brianna talks frankly about what she has learned at the Y. Most importantly, she has learned that she always has to
believe in herself and her abilities. Four years ago, she suffered an injury when she failed to complete a back tuck during a
floor exercise. She is very proud that she never gave up trying to conquer her fear of executing this skill, and this summer,
she achieved her goal of successfully incorporating the difficult element into her routine.
Her involvement in gymnastics has helped Brianna to overcome her shyness and helped her learn how to talk to people. It
has also helped her to manage her time wisely and succeed in school. Brianna is a straight A student!

SHE IS Y
Arlene Chick,
For
the Y has been a way of life since retiring from GTE Sylvania in December of 1992. Retirement
came a bit earlier than I had originally planned, so I turned to the Y for both exercise and for socialization. On my first day of
retirement, I joined the Seacoast Y and have been a faithful member since! I was interested in water aerobics so I registered for the
Rusty Hinges Program and found it to be a good fit for my needs. Tammy Hilton has been the instructor all these years and I have
come to like her as an instructor and consider her a good friend. I have made many friends through the Y and look forward to seeing
them in class!
One day I was having shortness of breath and went to the ER for a check-up and was told I had a 90% blockage in the main artery
of my heart. I had two stents put in, and after 6 weeks of therapy I was cleared to go back to the Y. I started back at the Y slowly
and eventually worked up to 2 miles on the treadmill every morning followed by a swim. I also continue to participate in the Rusty
Hinges Program every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday! I need to pace myself differently since the heart problem, but I really think
exercise is the answer to a healthy heart!
I have had many people tell me they admire my dedication to the Y and my healthy lifestyle. I hope my hard work and dedication
inspires other seniors to do the same. There is life after 80, but you have to work a little bit harder!
