Y5 Curriculum letter

English
In English the children will be studying narrative poetry by using The
Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. They will also read and analyse a novel
from our Literary Heritage: Tom’s Midnight Garden by
Philipa Pearce.
This will build links with our topic of Time Travellers. The
children will have the opportunity to write their own short
story and a narrative poem as well as a variety of nonfiction texts.
Alongside their Home readers, the children will be developing their
comprehension skills through guided reading and class discussion about
a variety of novels and text types. They will be learning to use inference and deduction to answer questions about the text as well as finding evidence to support their ideas.
Maths
In Maths the children will continue to develop their
understanding of place value up to 1,000,000. They will
continue to expand their knowledge of addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division to include decimals. They will also have the
opportunity to learn about equivalent fractions.
Through practical work, children will be able to investigate
the relationship between area and perimeter as well as
exploring angles.
Across all of these areas of Maths, children will be required to apply
their skills to problem solving.
Topic
Time Travellers
During the Spring term, the children will take a journey through time,
investigating important events and understanding life through the
decades.
The children will visit The Space Centre, exploring space, the universe
and experiencing breath-taking discoveries and interactive fun.
In History, through research, they will use timelines to gain a greater
understanding of key events such as The Great Fire of London, World
War 1, changes in art work, toys and fashion .
In Art, the children will be looking at Dali and surrealism and using his
work as inspiration to create their own piece.
Other Curriculum Areas
Science
Throughout the first half of the term in Year 5, the children will have the
opportunity to investigate Earth and Space.
Through research they will understand the work and theories of Ptolemy, Alhazen and
Copernicus. They will be able to describe the sun, Earth and moon as approximately
spherical bodies and describe the movement of the Earth and other planets relative to
the sun in the solar system. Through practical experiments, understand the idea of
Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across
the sky.
Computing
Throughout this term the children will use ICT to develop their skills as
well as support their learning in their topic work. The children will be creating repeating patterns using graphic software and computer programming.
PE
In weekly PE sessions, the children will develop their ball skills. Coventry City will be
working with the children both in theory lessons focusing on PSHE and practical
lessons. In gymnastics the children will continue to develop their coordination and
balance skills using apparatus, stretches and floor work.
RE
In RE this term, the children will focusing initially Judaism and then they will have the
opportunity to learn more about Artefacts.
Other Curriculum Areas
Foreign Languages—French
The children will be focusing on their conversational French,
learning to greet others, to talk about themselves and where
they live. The children will also be learning to construct
sentences and paragraphs using their knowledge and
understanding of French vocabulary.
PSHE
In PSHE we continue to reinforce the 7 Steps to Success
