Anywhere Benefit Walk for Angioma Alliance Team Angioma Alliance 2016 Walking Anywhere, Anytime Angioma Alliance 520 W 21st St STE G2-411 Norfolk, VA 23517 Angioma.org FB.com/AngiomaAlliance [email protected] How Do I Join a Team Angioma Alliance Walk? Anyone can join this national walk – individuals, small groups, large groups - by walking to raise awareness for cavernous angioma and Angioma Alliance. You can be as informal or organized as you like and pick your distance – we suggest 5K as a reasonable number. It is a "where you are" walk. We mean that both literally and figuratively as we want our affected members to be happy "where they are" even though it may not be where they had planned. How to Participate Individuals 1. Choose your commitment: Is 5K not far enough or too far? Where will you do it? 2. Announce your commitment often: post Facebook status updates, tweet, and/or email your address book regularly to let your circle know what you’re doing. This awareness raising is as important as anything that happens the day of your walk. Check out the posts from the Angioma Alliance Facebook page and the Zach Brown Virtual 5K for Angioma Alliance Facebook page for ideas – posting cavernous angioma facts is a great way to educate. 3. Ask for sponsorships. To allow your family and friends to support you with online donations, join the Team Angioma Alliance 2016 at https://give.everydayhero.com/us/team-angioma-alliance2016 (detailed instructions are at the end of this document). You also can accept checks made out to Angioma Alliance. 4. If you’re so inclined, offer to take on an extra challenge if you meet your fundraising goal – dump ice water over your head, walk the route backwards or in heels, dress in a costume, wear a sandwich board, sing loudly, walk uphill both ways, etc. You can compete with another walker – ask your network to help you beat your rival in sponsorships. 5. Encourage others to walk. You can reach out in the Angioma Alliance Facebook groups or the Community Forum to announce your intention. Send friends a link to this guide. 6. Order walk t-shirts from the Angioma Alliance store at http://angiomaalliance.myshopify.com/products/official-2016-anywhere-walk-strong-t-shirt 7. If you are very informal, on the day of your walk, print a bib from our website and pin it to your shirt, announce your walk to your social networks, and get out there. When you’re done, shout about your achievement and thank your supporters. With a little prior planning, you can also order t-shirts from Angioma Alliance. 8. Mail any checks you received to Angioma Alliance. Please exchange cash for a cashier’s check at your bank before mailing. If you can provide mailing information for your cash donors, we’ll send them a tax receipt and thank you. If the weather isn’t cooperating, it’s perfectly okay to take a leisurely stroll around your local mall or box store. Wear your t-shirt or bib, if you’re willing to spread the message. Alternately, if you have a gym membership, get on the treadmill. Small Groups (up to 20) 1. Create a Facebook group and mark it either Closed or Secret to use for planning. 2. In the group, choose your commitment: Is 5K not far enough or too far? Where will you do it? When will you do it? A small group shouldn’t need a permit for most venues, but you may want to reserve a shelter if you are walking in a park. Alternately, you can start from someone’s house and walk a neighborhood or take a walk on the beach. It’s a great excuse for an afterparty. 3. Everyone in the group should announce their commitment often: post Facebook status updates, tweet, and/or email your address book regularly to let your circle know what you’re doing. This awareness raising is as important as anything that happens the day of your walk. Check out the posts from the Angioma Alliance Facebook page or the Zach Brown Virtual 5K for Angioma Alliance Facebook page for ideas – posting cavernous angioma facts is a great way to educate. You can designate one person as social media maven and everyone can Share or cut/paste their updates. 4. Ask for sponsorships. Create a fundraising page for your team members using EveryDayHero by joining the Team Angioma Alliance 2016 page at https://give.everydayhero.com/us/teamangioma-alliance-2016 (detailed instructions are at the end of this document). You can also accept donation checks made out to Angioma Alliance. 5. If you’re so inclined, group members can offer to take on an extra challenge if you meet your fundraising goal – dump ice water on each other, walk the route backwards or in heels, dress in costume, wear a sandwich board, sing loudly, etc. You can compete with another group – ask your network to help you beat your rival in sponsorships. 6. Encourage others to walk. You can reach out in the Angioma Alliance Facebook groups or the Community Forum to find other members in your area. 9. Order walk t-shirts from the Angioma Alliance store at http://angiomaalliance.myshopify.com/products/official-2016-anywhere-walk-strong-t-shirt 10. Mail any checks you received to Angioma Alliance. Please exchange cash for a cashier’s check at your bank before mailing. If you can provide mailing information for your cash donors, we’ll send them a tax receipt and thank you. If the weather isn’t cooperating, it’s perfectly okay for a family-size group to take a leisurely stroll around the mall or box store. Wear your t-shirts, if you’re willing to spread the message. It may be a guerilla awareness walk, but nothing great has ever been accomplished without a little subversion. Buy something – water, for example – if you’re experiencing any guilt. Larger Groups (20 or more) Awesome! You are now planning an event! This requires more coordination and the use of a website called Constant Contact for registrations, but can be really fun in both the planning and doing stages. A simple walk can be put together in six weeks if a venue is available and you are focused. The first thing you’ll want to do is review our larger walk guide at http://www.angioma.org/documents/AngiomaAllianceWalkGuideLarge2016.pdf and contact Angioma Alliance at [email protected] so we can support you. Once you’ve contacted us, we’ll partner you with one of our experienced walk organizers for mentoring. We want to help you make your event a success. Online Fundraising - EveryDayHero This year, we have chosen EveryDayHero as our platform for creating online fundraising pages. Please do not use any other fundraising site. To use EveryDayHero: 1. Visit https://give.everydayhero.com/us/team-angioma-alliance-2016 and click Join this Team. 2. You will be asked to register. Then, you will see a screen with form fields. Add your story and a picture. You can also add suggested a fundraising goal. When your page is complete, use the Share button to get out the word. That’s it! See our guide http://www.angioma.org/documents/AngiomaAllianceWalkGuideLarge2016.pdf if you would like to create your own event page that allows others to join your team. Questions?
