School District No. 23, Central Okanagan “Home of the Jaguars” GLENROSA MIDDLE SCHOOL Thursday, June 6, 2013 Dear Parents/Guardians: School District #23's goal for all students in the Central Okanagan is to have them acquire evidence of becoming Learners, Thinkers, Collaborators, Innovators and Contributors. As a result, schools across our district are implementing learning activities and opportunities for students to acquire and demonstrate these attributes. Glenrosa Middle School is at the forefront of this important work. Throughout the course of this school year students have been actively engaged in collaborative problem solving activities in Mentorship as well as participating in projectbased learning units in a variety of classrooms. Additionally, our grade nine students are in the process of developing electronic portfolios that represent their learning and acquisition of the School District #23 attributes. The process our grade nine students have been immersed in to create these electronic portfolios is preparing them for their yearend presentations of learning which will take place on June 20 th . These yearend presentations of learning will take the place of final exams and are a mandatory part of each grade nine student's program of studies. On June 20 th , we will have an adjusted schedule for the day to allow parents to come and see their child's presentation of learning. All grade 9 students will be in attendance in their mentorship classes from 1:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Grade nine students set up and make final preparations for their presentations from 1:303:00 p.m. Each student will then have fifteen minutes to present their presentation of learning. Schedules for the exact time of each student's presentation will be sent home the week of June 10 th so that parents can make arrangements to attend their child's presentation. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your child's presentation time, and wait quietly outside their room until invited in. We look forward to having you participate in this exciting yearend event with your child. Grade nine students and their families who choose to participate in the grade 9 yearend celebration are invited to remain at the school. Students will be provided dinner from 5:456:15. This will be followed by the grade nine celebration assembly from 6:307:30, and the grade nine year end dance from 8:0010:00. Please note that GRADE NINE STUDENTS WILL NOT BE IN ATTENDANCE ON JUNE 19 TH to allow the grade seven and eight students to complete their yearend assessments on that day. June 20 th will be grade nine students final day of school for the 2012/13 school year. Grade seven and eight students have been working on critical thinking challenges for the past several weeks. All grade seven and eight students will be in attendance for their final day of assessment on June 19 th . On this day students will present the results of their critical challenges to their classmates. These yearend presentations of their critical challenges will take the place of final exams and are a mandatory part of each grade seven and eight student's program of studies.
