Create an Elaborate Pie Chart 1. Create the Chart: a. Highlight the data to be used as the pie chart. b. On the Insert tab, click Pie, located on the Charts ribbon. c. As shown in the illustration below, click the first “Pie in 3-D” icon. 2. Enlarge the Chart: a. Right-click the background of the chart and choose Move Chart b. Click the option button for New Sheet. c. Type a name for the new chart tab and the press ENTER . 3. Format the Chart: a. On the Design tab, click the layout that you want, located on the Chart Layouts ribbon. As shown in the next illustration, the second layout has the legend at the top of the graph and it includes data labels. b. On the Design tab, click the chart style of your choice, located on the Chart Styles ribbon. Located at the end of the Chart Styles, use the More of available styles. icon, to see a longer list 4. Set the Chart Effects: a. Click the pie one time to select the chart. b. As shown in the next illustration, on the Format tab, click Shape Effects, located on the Shape Styles ribbon. c. Place the mouse pointer on Bevel, and then click at the bottom of the menu, click 3-D Options. d. As shown in the illustration above, do the following: i. Click the drop-down arrow for the “Top” icon. This will bring up a list of different bevel types. ii. Click the first bevel type, named, “Circle.” iii. Set the Width and Height for the “Top” icon to 512 each. iv. Repeat the last three sub-steps for the “Bottom” icon (see the illustration above to see the finished changes). e. Use the drop-down arrow on the Material button to change the material to Plastic. Hint: as you move the mouse pointer onto the different material, the material name will be displayed. f. 5. Set the Shadow Effect: a. Click any piece of the pie. b. On the Format tab, click Shape Effects, located on the Shape Styles ribbon. c. Place the mouse pointer on Shadow, and then under the “Perspective” group at the bottom of the menu, click the shadow style, Below. 6. To rotate the Chart: You may want to rotate the chart for a better perspective. a. Click a piece of the pie. b. On the Format tab, click Format Selection, located on the Current Selection ribbon. c. Click-and-drag the “Angle of First Slide” slide bar to rotate the chart. Hint: Move it a little bit and release the mouse to see the effect. It is trial-and-error to get the chart rotated as desired. 7. To Add or Change Data Labels: a. Click any piece of the pie. b. On the Layout tab, click Data Labels. c. At the bottom of the menu, click More Data Label Options. d. Add a checkmark to the type of label to add. Many people add the percentage instead of the actual data amount. e. The Label Position options allow you to specify where the label is to be displayed. f. g. If a label is not where you want it to be, just click-and-drag the data label to the desired location and drop it.
