The Uniting Church in Australia 2nd April, 2017 WELCOME TO THIS NEWS-SHEET OF EVENTS AND GENERAL INFORMATION from LEOPOLD UNITING CHURCH Image: Daniel Thornton via Flickr VOLUNTEERING What I like about volunteering is that if it is not to my liking I can vote with my feet whenever I feel like it. Being free of the need for a pay packet means I get involved for the days and hours I want. When I have had enough, I can leave, thereby avoiding stress and lowering high blood pressure. My grandson loves volunteering in overseas locations like Cambodia and Guatemala. He particularly loves helping children and the environment. For his next post, he will spend two weeks in Vietnam supporting children with special needs. Of course, not all of us can volunteer overseas. What can we, safely at home, do to help others? Personally, I have volunteered as treasurer of the Leighmoor Uniting Church tennis club for 20 years, helped out at the Girrawheen Daycare centre in Brighton and participated in various door knock collections for charities. I was also a conductor of the ParkinSong choir in Ashwood for the past two years. This is part of a research program that aims to show the physical and mental benefits of singing for those suffering Parkinson’s disease. Reflection: This is from a prayer and blessing at a Social Justice Forum 2013: “I want to see a world where there are no wars, where people can live without fear of guns and bombs...with people having access to clean drinking water and where children live a better, full life.” Wouldn’t you want to see that world too?
