SBH Employee Scoop
8
As the year has come to a
close, we would like to take
some time to tell each of
you how very thankful we
are as an organization for
the work you do every day.
We realize that sometimes
our patients and their
families don’t express their
sincere gratitude to you. As an organization,
we are so blessed to have so many hardworking, dedicated, and loyal employees.
However, we are not going to sit back on our
laurels and take each of you for granted.
If we truly believe in encouraging employees
to be “the best” in their field, then we should
provide many more opportunities for you
to be that!! In the coming months we will be
rolling out several initiatives to facilitate this.
In other words, “put our money where our
mouth is”. Your patients, families and coworkers deserve for you to “be the best” and
provide exceptional care to them. We want
to facilitate this each and every day.
We believe that having the tools and being
adequately trained to do the job you are
assigned is of extreme importance. Having
higher competence in your job directly
correlates to the increase in the quality
of care we provide. To that end, we are
going to provide a significant amount
of additional training in all areas of the
organization. Please let your supervisor
know if you think there are areas where
additional training would be helpful for you.
As always, please thank your spouses
and significant others for the sacrifices
they make that allow you to care for our
patients and families the way you do.
Happy Holidays
and New Year!
Thank You Tony Harper!
We would like to take a moment and acknowledge
the five years Tony Harper, our Executive Vice
President of Human Resources, has contributed to
this company. When Tony joined SBH, we had two
hospitals and no significant HR systems. Today we
have ten hospitals and a very robust HR system.
None of this would have been possible without
Tony’s tireless efforts.
As you may already know, Tony is leaving us at the
end of January to seek other opportunities. Please
take a moment to email, call or send a note to him
if he was of support to you or your co-workers.
Best wishes!!!
“Helping families put their lives back together, one piece at a time.”

Strategic News
With the opening of Strategic Behaviorial Center-Wilmington’s
in-patient facility for adults, there is new help for seniors in the tricounty area who are in crisis -- those who are in danger of harming
themselves or others. The 20-bed, co-ed hospital serves adults 55
and older who suffer from cognitive loss, depression, psychosis
and other disorders. The stand-alone hospital, located in Leland, is
an expansion of SBC-Wilmington’s current child and adolescent
program.
“We recognize there is a great need in North Carolina for services
for adults,” said Daniel Kern, chief executive officer of SBCWilmington. “We know they are struggling and lack support. We are
excited we can help folks put their lives back together and get back
in the community.”
Mental health disorders among seniors is frighteningly high. Older
adults are the highest risk population for suicide, said Will Adams,
psychologist and vice president of clinical services for Strategic
Behavioral Health, the Memphis-based parent company. While
seniors represent only 13 percent of the population, they account
for 20 percent of completed suicides. Also, the elderly are 20
percent more likely to suffer from depression. However, 80 percent
of seniors who get treatment get better, he added.
The causes for mental health disorders and attendant violent
behavior among seniors are many. A large number suffer from grief,
hopelessness or a significant loss: a spouse, job, family support,
memory, activities they love, loss of their sense of identity or
purpose, according to Adams. Others deal with memory challenges
or psychiatric disorders such as paranoia, anxiety or bipolar
disorders.

Story by Lynda Van Kuren - StarNews
Volume 26
When seniors can’t cope with these issues, they may exhibit
oppositional, aggressive behaviors such as violent speech or
actions. Or they may fall into acute depression and withdraw
from the world. These seniors may tell others they no longer
want to be here or give away their belongings. All of the above
are warning signs that need to be taken seriously, says Janet
Santoro, SBC-Wilmington’s clinical director.
SBC-Wilmington offers free assessments to seniors who
exhibit such dangerous behaviors 24/7. If they qualify for
treatment, they are admitted to the center and placed in the
care of a multi-disciplinary team. The team members who
specialize in geriatrics include a psychiatrist, physician, nursing
staff, licensed therapist, dietician, and recreational therapist.
Through intensive therapy -- counseling, dialogue, and
education -- the team helps the patient process his or her
emotions, no matter how difficult. Then the team and the
patient, as well as the patient’s caregivers, if appropriate,
develop a long-range aftercare plan. A case manager is assigned
to patients who don’t have caregiver support. While patients
usually stay at the center for five to seven days, they can stay
longer if needed. Patients can remain there until they are
stabilized, Santoro said.
