One Warm Coat for more than 2,800 children in CEDA Head Start
As temperatures fell and the first
snow covered the trees and streets,
2,830 children in need received the
gift of warmth. One Warm Coat, in
partnership with Burlington Coat
Factory and ABC’s Good Morning
America, donated 15,000 children’s
coats purchased with funds donated
to their Warm Coats and Warm Hearts
Coat Drive to the National Head Start
Association.
Thursday, December 20, 2012,
CEDA Head Start children visited
Burlington Coat Factory in Crestwood,
IL to pick up their new winter coats
as Burlington Coat Factory committed
to host 11 In-store Distribution events
nationwide to celebrate the donations.
During these events, Head Start
children and their families picked out
coats. Locations that received coats
include, but are not limited to: Falls
Church VA, Boston MA, Newark NJ,
Raleigh NC, Chicago IL, Dallas TX,
Denver CO, San Francisco CA, Seattle
WA, Phoenix AZ, and Topeka KS.
“The simple gift of a warm winter
coat makes a huge difference to a
child,” said Yasmina Vinci, Executive
Director of the National Head Start
Association. “No one should ever
worry that they will be cold during
the winter. These coats provide both
warmth and security to the children
and families who received them.”

CEDA hosts food basket giveaway for Thanksgiving holiday
Seasons of Giving
CEDA celebrates successful seasons of giving with families and
partners in Cook County
Families across Cook County were
surprised the week of Thanksgiving
with food baskets filled with a
cornucopia of fresh vegetables, canned
goods and turkeys from CEDA.
CEDA’s offices in Calumet Park
and Mount Prospect received generous
donations of non-perishable items for
baskets distributed to families in the
north, west and south suburbs.
Betsy Kmiecik, Vice President,
Human Resources, Daily Herald
Publications and The Daily Herald
newspaper hosted a canned food drive
with proceeds going to CEDA, as well
as the student council at Wheeling
High School, who organized and
executed a Community Can Food
Drive that yielded more than 70 boxes
of food.
Terry Brady, Area Vice President,
Securitas organized a food drive with
Securitas Security Services USA, Inc.,
donating canned goods, baby formula
and diapers.
CEDA’s food pantries feed families
in need all year, but these donations
largely increased the number of
families who received food for
Thanksgiving.
“CEDA works year-round to
combat the challenges associated
with hunger by providing access
to nutritious food through our food
pantries, distributing vouchers to

mothers and children for locally
grown fruits and vegetables, and
even working with residents to
build community gardens in their
neighborhoods,” said Patricia DohertyWildner, President/CEO, CEDA.
“However, the number of families
plagued by food insecurity is steadily
rising and CEDA, like many local food
pantries and charitable organizations
cannot keep pace.”
In addition to contributions from
partners and local donors, CEDA
staff also gave generously by helping
to fill food drive collection bins and
volunteering to pack baskets, call
selected families and even deliver
baskets.
Clear Channel and the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation donate 300
turkeys to CEDA
The holiday season creates a special opportunity for CEDA staff and partner organizations to go
the extra mile to help families in need. The families we serve are facing hard times each day, and
the holiday season brings on extra challenges. This Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, CEDA
worked to provide meals, warm coats, clothing, toys and gifts to make the holidays brighter
for hundreds of families in Cook County. Staff volunteered time, donated food from their own
kitchens and offered up money from their pockets to support the worthy cause.

Patricia Doherty-Wildner, President/CEO, CEDA, Mark Burger, Director, Energy Services,
Andrenika Murff, Director, Workforce, Marsha Belcher, Director, Marketing and Resource
Development visited CEDA Calumet Park to pack Thanksgiving baskets for families.
Just in time for the Thanksgiving
holiday, CEDA received a donation
of 300 turkeys from Clear Channel
and the Steve and Marjorie Harvey
Foundation.
Recipients filled the stadium at
Chicago State University on Saturday,
November 17, 2012 to receive their
turkeys and meet and greet staff from
the foundation.
The Steve and Marjorie Harvey
Foundation donated 1,000 turkeys at
the event which appeared on daytime
television on the Steve Harvey Show.
CEDA would like to sincerely
thank Clear Channel and the Steve and
Marjorie Harvey Foundation for the
generous donation.

ASHRAE 62.2 Weatherization Measures Demonstrated at South Side
Residence on National Weatherization Day
CEDA, energy conservation
groups and other community action
agencies nationwide observe the
month of October as Weatherization
Month. Weatherization Month is
an opportunity to celebrate the
achievements made to help improve
the lives of thousands of families.
“The Illinois Home Weatherization
Assistance Program works for our
communities. This program provides
permanent solutions to reduce
the energy burden on families by
installing cost-effective, energyefficient materials and services,” said
Pat Doherty-Wildner, CEDA President/
CEO.
Featured in the October 30
demonstration, was a new ventilation
standard, ASHRAE 62.2. The 62.2
standard looks at the home’s capacity
6
to remove contaminants (including
moisture) from the bath and kitchen.
Unlike traditional bathroom fans,
this fan is silent and continuously
running. Bathrooms and kitchens are
recognized as sources of poor indoor
air quality.
CEDA weatherization contractor,
Arcos Environmental Services, also
demonstrated installation of loose fill,
and dense pack cellulose insulation
in the attic and walls. In the home
basement, contractors cleaned and
tuned the furnace and replaced the
hazardous pitch of the flue gas pipe
connected to the hot water heater.
For homeowner Jeffrey Moore,
“this [home weatherization] is a
stepping stone for me for years to
come to have a nice warm comfortable
residence for me and my family.”

Reading is Fundamental
donates 3,500 books to
Head Start program
WIC receives generous donation of books
from Western Spring Library Friends
CEDA’s Head Start program
received a grant from the Reading
is Fundamental program, funded by
Macy’s, to provide 3,500 books to
children currently enrolled and their
families, this November.
CEDA’s partnership with Reading
is Fundamental aligns with Head
Start’s core value of promoting school
readiness by helping to instill a love
for reading at an early age.
“Head Start is excited to partner
with Reading is Fundamental as
we continue to promote long-term
success among children enrolled
in our program,” said Unita Sims,
Vice President, Children and Family
Services.
“Children in our low-income
communities rarely have the
opportunity to own books that they
can call their own,” said Daisy
Lezama, Interim Director of Policy
Implementation. “The children select
books from a variety of titles and
then share them with their parents
and guardians. It’s a win-win for the
families and the program.”
During October 2012, the CEDA
WIC program received approximately
600 books generously donated by the
Western Springs Library Friends at the
Thomas Ford Memorial Library.
These toddler and children’s books
were distributed to clients as part of a
collaboration between CEDA WIC and
Community High School District 218’s
“Cradle to the Classroom” Project
at the Oak Lawn and Blue Island
locations.
This project highlights the
importance of parents and guardians
reading with their infants and young
children, as research has shown that
doing so stimulates brain activity and
intellectual growth.
Volunteers from Cradle to the
Classroom attend WIC education
classes and present information about
the benefits of parents reading with
their children.
Both programs are extremely
grateful to the Western Springs Library
Friends for their kind donation and
investment in the futures of many
young clients.

CEDA Staff Beautify Robbins Senior Lounge for Make A Difference Day
On Saturday, November 3rd,
2012, CEDA staff participated in the
nationwide “Make a Difference Day.”
For more than two decades, USA
Weekend and Points of Light have
joined together to sponsor Make a
Difference Day which is celebrated
annually on the fourth Saturday in
October.
This national day of community
service connects people with
opportunities to serve, which then
increases the strength of communities
and promotes civic engagement.
This year, CEDA staff volunteered
to beautify the CEDA Robbins Center,
located at 3518 West 139th Street, a
community asset that provides services
to hundreds of individuals each year.

Healthy Homes Technical Study: Health V Study Summary
CEDA is participating in a health
study under a HUD grant administered
through the University of Illinois
at Chicago (UIC). We will act as a
contractor to UIC assisting with the
study by using our Weatherization
process to change the natural air
infiltration rates of homes and monitor
changes to Indoor Air Quality.
The documentation being
collected through the study will
include: Indoor Air Quality lab
results, digital readings collected with
provided sampling equipment, and
a health survey to be administered
by a UIC representative, both before
and after the Weatherization work is
complete, to identify changes in the
occupants physical and mental health
(if any).
Using a randomized selection of
44 homes from our clientele, Health
V documents the effectiveness of two
different ventilation standards having
8
different endpoints in terms of fresh air
supplied to the home, and how those
endpoints affect the Indoor Air Quality
and the health of the occupants in the
context of Weatherization.
The ventilation standards being
tested are:
• ASHRAE 62-1989 – 22
homes proceeded under
our current ventilation
standard being implemented
through the Illinois Housing
Weatherization Assistance
Program (IHWAP) standards,
and;
• ASHRAE 62.2 – 22 homes
follow the new ventilation
standard IHWAP adopted as
of July 1st, 2012.
The stated objectives are to
determine the effect of each ventilation
standard individually on resident
health and indoor air quality, and to
determine if the ASHREA 62.2 yields
a greater improvement in health and
indoor air quality compared to that of
ASHRAE62-1989.
The studies premise is based on
the hypothesis created by HUD that
using the ASHREA 62.2 ventilation
protocol leads to improved health
and indoor environment conditions
related to the conditions in homes
before intervention; and adopting
ASHRAE 62.2 results in significantly
greater health and indoor environment
improvement compared with ASHRAE
62-1989.
This study CEDA will help
CEDA to better understand the new
ASHREA 62.2 ventilation protocol as
well as with develop and strengthen
relationships with different institutions
and organizations advocating
improved quality of services to clients
by providing healthier and safer
homes.

What to Do When Your Child Gets Sick: Head Start Healthcare Institute
This Fall, CEDA Head Start
conducted a series of trainings for
parents based on the book, What To
Do When Your Child Gets Sick.
The Health Care Institute focused
on helping parents make informed
decisions regarding their child’s health.
Session topics included: What to do
in an emergency; When to call the
doctor; What to do when your child
has the flu; How to take your child’s
temperature; Stopping the spread of
an infection; and How to care for cuts
and scrapes. Trainers gave helpful tips
and dispelled many myths associated
with common childhood illnesses. The
objective of the training was to keep
parents and children out of emergency
rooms and build healthier households.
Healthy children also miss less of
valuable time in school.
Trainings were free of charge and
held in five suburban locations and
one at the CEDA central office.

WIC launches new technology at sites to improve efficiency
CEDA’s WIC department has set-up
iPads at each location as a means to
improve the intake process.
Applicants will now have access
to detailed instructions and overviews
of each form in Spanish, Polish and
Arabic during the application process.
WIC staff prerecorded instructions
over each mandatory form
outlining important regulations and
requirements for applicants.
Before, applicants could only
complete the process with the
assistance of a fluent staff member.
With the assistance of this
new technology at each site, the
application process will become more
efficient and seamless.
