BenVal
Benefits Data Source
BenVal
The best-managed companies rely on the highestquality market data to make decisions about
competitive positioning.
Willis Towers Watson’s BenVal provides an objective
approach to compare the design of benefit plans for a
group of companies. Key benefit design provisions are
assessed using a common set of actuarial assumptions
and methods, and a consistent employee population or
sample employee profile.
BenVal ensures a consistent benchmark
This diagnostic analysis produces an unbiased environment
where differences in the benefit value among companies
are a direct result of differences in the benefit plan design
provisions. The results also consider the employee and
employer cost-share arrangements of providing the benefits.
Organizations use BenVal analyses to help them:
ƒƒ
Benchmark the benefits of market peers
ƒƒ
Redesign benefit plans
ƒƒ
Conduct due diligence for mergers and acquisitions
ƒƒ
Harmonize benefit plans between multiple divisions/
operating units
ƒƒ
Align with corporate governance
ƒƒ
Prepare a total remuneration analysis
Benefits Data Source (BDS) is Willis Towers
Watson’s global benefit database. BDS captures
detailed information on employer-sponsored benefit
plan design practices such as retirement, health,
wellness, death and disability, meals, paid time off
and flexible benefits.

Choose your comparators
A custom BenVal provides an in-depth comparison of how
an employer-provided set of benefits compares to the
benefits of a custom-selected peer group of companies.
You tell us which organizations you’d like to include in your
peer group. You can decide whether to compare based on
the characteristics of your own employee population or a
standard population based on a typical large employer.

Privacy and use of data
Benefit information for each BDS participant is available for
Willis Towers Watson to use in custom analyses for other Willis
Towers Watson clients, as well as research and development,
and general promotional activities. Information and results
will be shared in an aggregate format only and when the peer
group size is large enough to prevent identification of a single
company’s data outside of Canada and the U.S.
For Canada and the U.S., each participant’s broad-based
benefit information is made available to other database
members and for use in benefit design studies, with results
identified by employer. Information is also used in benefit
analyses for Willis Towers Watson clients and prospects
(including non-database participants), and in quality
assurance, training, research and development, and general
promotional activities such as aggregated trend analysis.
