The Bormann Bugle Classroom News from Room 204 Edition 3 November 2016 -Reading- -Writing Workshop- Sequence of Events To practice this new skill, readers put events from Room on the Broom in sequential order. Students also put events from their just-right books in order using words like beginning, middle, and end. This month we transitioned through the many stages of writing. We began by immersing ourselves in thoughtprovoking mentor texts like Ish, Written Anything Good Lately?, and I Like to Be Little. We worked on brainstorming ideas for our writing before we planned our writing by drawing out our ideas. Then we drafted our stories. Finally, we edited our writing by checking for capital letters and punctuation. Understanding Characters After identifying character traits from our mentor text A Bad Case of The Stripes, students read their just-right books to find character traits. We discussed how characters can change throughout the story. Main Idea and Details Students used the mentor text How Animals Communicate to identify the main idea and retell key details from the text. Students used graphic organizers to find the main idea in their just-right books. We practice main idea and detail because it is important for readers to be able to identify the most important idea in a story. -Word Study Short u words Short a words Short i words Words with blends The ch sound Sorting words by short vowel sounds To compliment our non-fiction texts in reading, we worked on non-fiction writing by researching interesting animals. -Other Language ArtsThis month we explored nouns, verbs, and how to punctuate different kinds of sentences. In addition to practicing our facts, we also worked on teamwork, collaboration, and taking turns. At the Teacher’s Table We have been practicing many different strategies for addition. We are building our doubles fact fluency to help us add doubles plus one and doubles minus one. We are also working on using a ten-frame to help us add.
