The Temple december 2010/5771 = kislev / tevet = volume 71 / number 4 = established 1867 = www.the-temple.org Your Jewish Personality worship schedule E ach year, we proudly take our tenth grade confirmands on Rabbi Steven H. Rau, RJE a trip to New York as part of their confirmation program. Director of Lifelong Learning In order to help them contextualize their weekend experience, this year we decided to add a new learning component. We created a pre-test for the students in a Myers-Briggs type format that asks a series of questions to help identify a personality type. Rather than determining their every day personality, this test was designed to determine their Jewish identity. The questions helped the teens discover whether they identify most with Jewish (S) spirituality, (C) culture, (H) history, or (E) ethics. Then, after each stop on the trip, students were given a series of open-ended questions based on their Jewish identity score. During our planning process, we had no idea what impact, if any, this experimental program would have on the students. Yet as we read over their evaluations and answers after the weekend, we were shocked by the results. Not only are these teenagers grounded in their Judaism, but they are also passionate about continuing their study and strengthening their practice. In addition, many students told us that the mere exercise of analyzing each area of their Judaism led to a strengthening of some of their secondary and tertiary categories. If anyone were to question the future of Judaism in Atlanta, I would love to show them the passion these future Jewish leaders displayed during a weekend in New York. When we returned home from the weekend, I began to think about how most of us probably never stop to evaluate our own Jewish identities. We all know whether or not worship services or social action work speaks to us; but do we ever really stop to ponder how much they play a part in our everyday lives? Do we ever pause to think about our Jewish identities? Which is most important to each of us: = Our connection to God (S)? = Our connection to our culture (C)? = Where we fit into the story of the Jewish people (H)? = How we act and make decisions as Jews (E)? Though one probably stands out for each of us, which comes in a close second and third? As our secular year is coming to an end, and we are thinking about resolutions for the New Year, I would like to suggest we each take a moment to pause and make a quick examination of our own Jewish identities. Then, once we have found our individual identity type, we jot down a few activities or goals for 2011 that will fulfill our primary Jewish personality. Examples include: reading a history of the founding of the State of Israel, traveling to Eastern Europe, learning to cook traditional Jewish dishes, attending meditation sessions on Friday nights, following the Reform Action Center’s weekly newsletter, etc. As we complete each activity on our list over the coming months, let us examine how each impacts our secondary and tertiary identities. My guess is, with each new activity, we, will find a deeper connection to our Judaism, just as our confirmands did. May 2011 strengthen our spiritual, cultural, ethical, and historical Jewish connections. And may 2011 bring all of us health, happiness and peace. < Friday, December 3 Congregational Chanukah Shabbat Shabbat Shalom Temple! We meet at the Borders in Buckhead (near Phipps Plaza). The Men’s Club 4 Sunday, December 12 at 9:45 am Who’s been to Cuba? Did you know that The Temple sponsored a humanitarian trip to Cuba last year? That’s right. And Jeff Bashuk will join us on December 12 for an interesting and informative talk about present and past lifestyles in Cuba. Jeff even knows what happened to the Cuban Jews, as well as the Jewish Mafia after 1959. That was the year that Castro nationalized all private industry, that is took control, owned and operated everyone’s business, except one. Jeff will tell us Sunday. So come hear the Men’s Club Speakers’ Program. Organ Restoration Update S ince August, when the last of the pipes, Cantor Deborah Numark windchests, and keyboards were removed from our sanctuary, A.E. Schleuter Pipe Organ Company has been hard at work rebuilding our historic instrument. To date, the organ console (where the organist sits and plays) has been disassembled. The keyboards (located on the console), are receiving new bushing felts; the console’s frame is being checked for strength, and the ivories on the keys themselves are being repaired. Major work is being performed on the organ’s electrical system, which controls all functions of the console (keyboards and stops) and organ chambers (pipes). A critical part of the restoration is the design of the new electrical system and its thousands of DC switching circuits. This has just been completed, and the design is in the process of being fabricated. The thousands of pipes in the organ sit on windchest actions that date back to 1930, when our organ was new! The windchests have leather pouches, valve assemblies, and primary actions that open and close in conjunction with the organ key action to make the individual pipes speak. All these parts and assemblies must be able to move over twenty times per second to assure that the action is responsive to the demands of the organist. The Schleuter Company has just begun work on the disassembly of these windchests. They are systematically logging and tagging the individual pneumatic sizes of each, to assure that the reconstructed chest actions are built to the exact specifications of the original design and function. It is our expectation that our newly restored organ will move back to its sanctuary home in the fall of 2011. Our gratitude goes to The Temple Organ Restoration Committee, co-chaired by Jackie Montag, Jack Holland, and Larry Pike, for their guidance and leadership. This expansive project could not have been undertaken without them. So too, do we thank all those whose support and encouragement helped fuel this effort. Our deep appreciation goes out to the following Temple members whose generosity (as of November 5, 2010) helped make this dream a reality: Iris Abelson, Nancy and Hal Abrams, Diane and Kent Alexander, Lynne and Robert Alpern, Susan and Jonathan Amsler, Myrtice and Herbert Arnold, Spring and Tom Asher, Gene Asher, Amy and Jeff Asher, Betsy and David Baker, Jerrold Barman, Mary Carole Cooney and Henry Bauer, Juli and Billy Bauman, Eloise Beerman, Penny Berk, Jackie and Jay Berkelhamer, Jane and Stan Bernstein, Natalie and Matthew Bernstein, Elissa and Edward Bluth, Miriam and Marvin Botnick, Elinor Rosenberg Breman, The Breman Foundation, Linda and Josh Brener, Robert Bunnen, Lillian and Louis Carrol, Carol and Kevin Cleveland, Lynne and Tom Daly, Robert Davis, Linda and Richard Davis, Michelle Merrick-Davis, Laura and Marshall Dinerman, Arnold Dobran, Joan and Robbie Dokson, Janet and Milton Dortch, The Engel Foundation (Ilene Engel), Carol Feldman, Lewis and Luellen Feldman, Jill and Joe Ferst, Jo Anne and Stuart Finestone, Cookie and Butch Frank, Mary and Sid Franklin, Louise and Robert Freedman, Ramona Freedman, The Ruth and Leopold Friedman Foundation, Micheline and Robert Gerson, Andrew Ghertner, Marina and Sander Gilman, Carole and Joel (z’’l) Goldberg, Roberta and Jonathan Golden, Laurie Ann and Jonathan Goldman, Lynne Goldsman and Andy Dean, Sarah and Robert Goudiss, Natalie and George Greene, Barbara and Jerry Greenbaum, Sherry and Ed Greenblatt, Lauren and Jim Grien, Billie Guthman, Margaret and Richard Guthman, Nina and Mark Hafitz, Phyllis and Rolf Hahn, Lynne and Howard Halpern, Laurie and David Harris, Lila Herbert, Lila and Doug Hertz, Meg and Steve Heyer, Ruth Heyman, Nancy and John Hirsch, Ellen and Jack Holland, Lewis Holland Sr., Millie Hyman, Betty Ann Jacobson, Annette Janowitz, Ann and George Jones, Murray Kaplan, Rosthema and Paul Kastin, Marice Katz, Pamela and Robert Kaufmann, Lisa Kepler, Jo Ann and Jack Kerker, Phyllis Kozarsky and Eliot Arnovitz, Davee and Milton Kuniansky, Janet Lavine and Rick Williams, Amy and Louis Lettes, Liz Levine, Valerie Hartman Levy and Jeff Levy, Barby and Bert Levy, Sarah and Alvin Levy, Marion Levy, Betty and Robert (z’’l) Lipshutz, Joel Lobel, Joel and Irwin Lowenstein, Peter Mallen, Denny Marcus and Andre Schnabl, Dorothy Marrinson, Diane and Martin Maslia, Doris and Sam Massell, Krista and Steve Massell, Kelly and David Miller, Deanne and Julian Mohr, Jackie and Tony Montag, Belinda Morris, Carol and Paul Muldawer, Valerie and Bill Needle, Helen and Donald Nelson, Peggy and Stephen Newfield, Paul Newman, Deborah Numark, Debra and Chris Patterson, Mina and Milton Pascaner, Bonnie and Larry Pike, The Pike Organ Fund, Ellen and Scott Rafshoon, Esther and Stanley Rawn, Patty and Doug Reid, Helen and John Rieser, Helen Revson, The Rich Foundation, Barbara and Maury Riff, Susan Roseman, Dulcy and Jerry Rosenberg, Harriett Ross, Amy and Jeff Rubin, Selma Sacks, Sonia Schwartz, Joyce and Henry Schwob, Linda and Steve Selig, Dede Shapiro, Jeanne and Robert Shulman, Marianne and Leonard Shutzberg, Bob Silverman, Alison Banger and Joe Slade, Jennifer and Adam Slutzky, Caryl and Kendrick Smith, Susan and Stuart Snyder, Cathy Stone, Jack Taffel, Becky and Richard Weinman, Debbie and Jack Wexler, Deanne and Morris Whitlock, Charlotte Wilen, Jessica Landisman Williams and Tommy Williams, Anita and Bruce Wilson, Tracy and Alan Wise, Anne and Robert Wiskind, Janet and Jeffrey Wolf, and Janie and Alan Yorker. < Events & Wednesday December 8, 2010 Friday January 14, 2011 Sunday January 30, 2011 your Temple Sages (of All Ages) Goes to Booth Western Art Museum Martin Luther King, Jr. Shabbat with Ebenezer Baptist Church The Temple Visits Ebenezer Baptist Church Activities to keep on calendar 4 www.the-temple.org/sages more info online 4 www.the-temple.org/mlkshabbat The 2010 Financial Report Revenue Projected Revenues expenses other 5.8% study 32.1% grants 11.0% tbrs & telc 29.7% dues 53.4% admin. 19.0% urj dues 4.5% facilities 13.0% assembly 12.8% worship 18.6% F or the past fiscal year ending June 30, 2010 total revenues were $3,874,584 and total expenses were $3,864,090 resulting in a slight surplus for the year of $10,494. Our lay and professional leaders continue to identify cost containment opportunities in light of these uncertain economic times and the potential for revenue shortfalls. The Temple continues to operate under the cost containment measures already implemented. These include head count reductions, job combinations, scheduling changes, and a Temple-wide compensation freeze. Thanks to the continued generosity of our members in supporting The Temple by paying membership dues and other fees, we are essentially operating at break even. The Finance Committee now chaired by Treasurer Jon Amsler continues to set a path for The Temple to meet its day to day operating requirements. The Finance Committee continues to review in detail all expenses to ensure proper controls and efficiencies. Cost containment is a constant theme in all budget and financial discussions. The Finance Committee is pleased with the work of the Membership Committee, lead by Louis Lettes and Stacey Lewinstein, which has resulted in increasing total membership numbers for the year. The Finance Committee also appreciates our members’ payments for Temple dues, which are the lifeblood of meeting our operating expenses. Temple expenses in the security and insurance areas remain high and are unavoidable. The safety and security for Temple members is a high priority, so additional security personnel during the High Holy Days, regular Temple events, and during Religious School and Temple Early Learning Center operations is needed. In order to meet this challenge, a security fee is assessed to all members. The fee for regular members is $150. Young Marrieds and Young Professionals pay an adjusted security fee of $95 and $75, respectively. We hope everyone continues to understand the necessity of funding this very necessary expense. Basic dues for 2011 will be $2,010, a slight 3% increase over 2010. We are pleased to report that many of you do “dig a little deeper” and increase beyond your current level of dues support. This generosity helped achieve the slight surplus of last year, and will go a long way to help us break even this year. The pie charts shown above represent projected revenues and expenses for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011. If there is any communication desired regarding Temple finances, please contact any Temple officer, Jon Amsler, Treasurer, or Mark Jacobson, Executive Director. Your timely payment of dues and increasing your annual support, if possible, is critical to The Temple’s meeting its operating needs. Our Temple family has always risen to the challenges it faces. The Temple Board is confident The Temple family will respond as it always does in meeting the needs of our membership and community. < Dues Regular Membership, Young Professionals, Young Marrieds 53.4% $2,203,500 Religious School and Temple Early Learning Center Revenue Religious School and Midweek Hebrew Fees, Breman Religious School Fund Grant, Passover Candy Sales, TELC Tuition and Registration Fees, Camp Tuition and Registration Fees, Enrichment Fees, Fundraising 29.7% $1,227,339 Other Facility Rental, Miscellaneous Income, Member Security Fee 5.8% $242,675 Memorial Book, Grants from Specific Purpose Funds, Adult Education Fees, Marcus Foundation Synaplex Grant, Donna & Michael Coles Jewish Identity Grant 11.0% $452,685 Total Revenue $4,126,199 Projected Expenses Administration Support Personnel, Insurance, Postage, Supplies 19.0% $791,693 Union for Reform Judaism Dues 4.5% $186,650 Facility Maintenance Supplies, Staff, Utilities, Security, Repairs and Maintenance 13.0% $541,748 House of Worship Rabbinic, Music, High Holy Days 18.6% $777,683 House of Study Religious School, Mid-Week Hebrew, Adult Education, TELC Teachers, Camp Minimac Teachers, Supplies, Administration, Programs 32.1% $1,342,311 House of Assembly Activities, Youth Group, Seniors, Synaplex, Communications 12.8% $535,502 Total Expenses $4,175,587 Donations of Appreciated Stock Leadership Dues Groups Temple members will be receiving their Temple dues statements for the 2011 year during the month of December. The Temple dues year is the calendar year, January – December, and statements are mailed at this time should members wish to take advantage of a tax deduction for the current 2010 year. Many members may wish to donate securities to satisfy their commitments. The donation of appreciated stock may be of considerable benefit considering tax consequences. Consult your tax advisor. If you wish to transfer stock, your broker will require the following information: Charles Schwab & Co., DTC #164, Temple Account #8769-3467. Please let us know of the transaction so we can follow up properly. You can call Mark Jacobson, Executive Director, with any questions if you wish to donate stock to The Temple at 404-873-1731 or email at [email protected]. Many Temple members participate in leadership dues level groups such as the Covenant Circle ($50,000+); Torah Circle ($25,000+); Minyan Circle ($18,000+); Rabbi’s Circle ($10,000+); Mitzvah Circle ($7,500+); Temple Dome Circle ($5,000+); Double Chai Circle($3,600+); and Menorah Circle ($2,500+). Members in these categories help The Temple be a religious home to members of our community who aren’t in a position to pay full dues. In addition, the names of Leadership Dues group participants are displayed in the lobby outside the Covenant Chapel. This will be updated in February. We hope we can either add or move your name to a higher Leadership Dues group level. Our Temple family would be most appreciative. If you would like information on these groups, call Belinda Morris, Temple President, Billy Bauman, Executive Vice President, Jon Amsler, Treasurer, or Mark Jacobson, Executive Director.
