This issue of human trafficking is one of the largest injustices of our time. But thanks to kids like you, we are one step closer to seeing it end. I truly believe that every person - no matter their age - can play a part in fighting human trafficking. That includes kids baking goodies & selling lemonade to raise money for the cause. Parents, I’m so glad that you are teaching your kids the importance of engaging social issues even at a young age. Your role as a parent is significant in raising up a generation that will work to make sure everyone is free. Here are a few tips: o Keep it simple. It is important for kids to understand that slavery exists today, but it is equally important that they not be scared or anxious. Simply put, slavery is when a person is treated as property and forced to work. That is a basic concept most kids will understand. o Don’t mention sex trafficking. When telling young kids about human trafficking, it is best to leave the issue of sex trafficking out. Your child may be old enough to know about sex, but this is a very graphic and perverted topic that we don’t want to introduce to children. o Let them know that even though slavery exists, it is illegal. This means that police and others are working really hard to stop slavery and keep people safe. o Tell them about God’s heart for slaves. Share with them the story of Pharoah oppressing the Israelites in the Bible. (Exodus 1:7-14) Pharoah owned people and made them work for him. These people were his slaves. The slaves didn’t get to choose where they wanted to work or where they wanted to live. Pharoah decided everything for them. The slaves were sad, and their lives were very hard. Can you imagine how sad you would be if someone else made all of your decisions for you? Now tell them the part of the story where God sends Moses to set the Isrealites free. The king didn’t think these people had any value at all, BUT GOD DID! God loved these slaves very much. He sent Moses to go and set them free. God used Moses to see the Isrealites released from slavery. o Explain that they get to play a part in seeing slaves set free. Just like God used Moses, He can use us to be a part of helping slaves receive freedom. The goal is for your child to feel empowered to make a difference! 4
