Abstract Oil Paintings – Helping Beginners Break Into Oil Painting
'Plenty more fish in the sea' by Anna Clucas
Painting using oil paints is probably one of the most fascinating techniques used in painting; and because of
the long time that it is required for it to dry, it is also one of the most tedious and time-consuming. Oil painting has been around for a long time; Renaissance artists use oil paints to create magnificent works of art. If
you’re interested in trying your hand at using this age old technique, you can do so by doing abstract oil
painting.
An artist should take extra care when dealing with oil paints; meticulous preparation is needed and you will
need to have a lot of practice if you wanted to depict real-life objects and surroundings. It takes a lot of skill
to interpret what you see and transferring them in full detail on a blank canvas; it is likely that the first painting will look like something a child might have done. For novices at oil painting, it is best to start off doing
abstract oil paintings, just so you can get a feel of just how to use these paints properly.
Most beginners painting are often too eager to create astounding works of art that they would focus too
much on getting every detail just right, but because they are beginners and do not know of even the basic
principles of painting they fall short of their expectations. It is important for them to realise that it takes
years of practice before you can create detailed and beautiful paintings. For beginners, abstract oil paintings
are the best way to express your feelings while also getting some practice.
To properly interpret aspects of the real world, you will need to understand their geometric elements. Objects in the real world are composed of shapes of varying sizes; you need to get them right in order to make a
detailed painting. But with abstract oil paintings, you are not bound by these strict rules that govern detailed
oil painting. Painting in abstract will allow you to use the bold colours and hues of oil paints to express your
feelings in a creative manner albeit a bit vague.
To create abstract oil paintings, you will not need to have years upon years of experience drawing portraits,
landscapes, or still life; you only need a creative vision, experiment with the use of different brush strokes
and bold colours to create different shapes and lines. By starting with painting abstracts, beginners will not
only be able to learn the correct way of holding the brush and applying paints on the canvas; they will also
learn how to correct their mistakes and how to correctly handle their masterpieces when they’re done.
Learning how to paint beautiful works of art requires you to have some patience to learn the correct techniques. By starting with abstract oil paintings, you will be able to express yourself while also honing your
painting skills.

Water Colour Workshop
It's about colour! Whether you have never picked up a brush before, or have often painted but been frustrated by the results, the Beginners workshop will be the perfect start.
This workshop covers the absolute basics in watercolour: advice on what sort of brushes, palettes and paper
to use and how to mix beautiful, fresh colours from just three tubes.
We experiment with making transparent, pure colours. Time is spent looking at brush technique, and the wet
in wet technique. We will then put all this information and experimentation into practice, making small
studies of fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers, and just enjoying loosening up with lovely, juicy paint. The
emphasis will then be to familiarise yourself with simple techniques, to lose inhibitions and possible unhelpful habits with watercolour, and not on producing a finished painting. It's all about enjoying painting and
building confidence. It's not unlikely though, that one of those studies may be lovely enough to make you
want to have it framed!
£35 2 hour taster including materials and the continuous workshops cost £15 per 2 hour sessions (this excludes materials).
Christmas Workshops: Please ask for or download information sheet!
***We hope to include Ceramic and Etching Printmaking Workshops at
