Club News: Annual General Meeting This month is our AGM. All members are urged to attend the meeting and take part in electing the management group. Have a look at the back page where the positions are listed, and if you feel you would like to have a go, let a Committee Member know beforehand. These are light blue in colour, come in the usual sizes with the choice of short or long sleeves, and your name monogrammed above the right hand pocket and the Club emblem on the left. Anyone wishing to order a shirt should let Margaret know as soon as possible. Don’t forget we have Club caps and floppy hats available too. Rally DVD A 2-disk DVD featuring video and still photos of our rally is available through the Club. The cost is $20.00 post paid. Contact Margaret Barrett to secure your copy. We have pre-purchased a quantity and will purchase more if required. Several videos of the rally are on You Tube (search Clarendon Classic). Year-end Meetings There will be no meetings in December. The November meeting (15th Nov – note this is 3rd Friday) will be the last for the year, but don’t forget our Christmas get together on 30 November – see further information below. The November newsletter deadline is a couple of days early too. Meetings in January 2014 will be as normal. Coming Events The Campbelltown Steam Museum holds its second Field Day event for the year on October 12-13. This continues to draw strong support from SAMCI members because of its excellent site, great camping, and the camaraderie of evening campfires. On October 19-20 is the Murrumbateman Field Days event. Murrumbateman is located between Canberra and Yass, and it attracts a very large number of visitors. Those members who have attended previously report it as being one of the best when it comes to public interest. On the same weekend is the National Trust sponsored Canberra Centenary Rally, which involves a road run for vehicles from HMAS Albatross near Nowra, to Canberra. We have some members participating. The famous Orange Field Days takes place on October 24-26 at the ANFD dedicated field day site at Borenore, about 15Km west of Orange. Some of our members join forces with others from the Central West in putting on a display. On October 26 we have been invited to the Portland Spring Fair at Portland Showground. Still in October, the weekend of 26-27 is the “Cranky Handle” rally held at Maitland. This is a very popular rally at an excellent site. www.sydneyantiquemachineryclub.com The Vintage Voice SAMC Inc Newsletter No 206 – Oct 2013 – Page 1 The Land newspaper sponsors the annual Small Farms Field Days on November 2-3 at Hawkesbury Showground. This is a great opportunity for us to show off our hobby. It always seems to fall on days of high temperatures, so take shade and plenty to drink. This year, vintage cars are invited to display on the Sunday only, but pre-registration is required. Also on Sunday November 3, our second annual Open Ploughing Day is being held at UWS Richmond. Entry to the site is via Southee Road. We have been given a larger area to play in this time, and hopefully it will not be quite as dry as last year. All tractor owners are invited to come and have a go. Contact Steve Muscat on 0418 453 203 to register and obtain more detailed directions. A BBQ lunch is being provided. On November 16-17 is the Taralga Vintage Farm Field Days event at Taralga Showground. Camping is available on site. This event is well supported by SAMCI members. We are holding a Christmas Party social get together on Saturday, November 30, afternoon and evening. A BBQ will be provided, and members are invited to bring along their event photos for a slide show. Rally (Ian Browning) Much has been reported elsewhere, but I would like to add a couple of tributes of my own. One is a personal thanks to Steve Muscat who did the heavy lifting and transport that enabled me to display my big engine that had languished for 3 years at home after its restoration. Steve did this on top of the enormous effort he put in to every aspect of the rally. The second is to single out the behind-the-scenes effort Jim Bew put in to clear all the wheelie bins of rubbish the rally generated. I know this kept him flat out, moving something like 96 bins in total, which would have cost us heaps had they been left for HDAA to clear. The Club owes him a big debt of gratitude – thank you, Jim. Rusty Iron Rally by Peter Woodmore The Rusty Iron Rally on the fathers day weekend was attended by Peter Woodmore, Graeme Irving, Charlie Bartolo, Michael Hingst and Kevin Shepherd. Most of us arrived on the Thursday afternoon or Friday morning to set up in magnificent weather which lasted the whole weekend. The club put on a welcome BBQ Friday night and a dinner on Saturday night at which awards were handed out, my Meadowbank taking out runner up for the best unrestored engine. The exhibitor numbers seemed down slightly particularly from SAMC but the crowds were good. The Quality of the displays was excellent and there were many engines there for the first time including my Meadowbank which ran for the whole weekend following rebuilding the water pump after problems at Mudgee, although I did have a spot of trouble with a hot main bearing on Saturday which was soon overcome. A lot of engines changed hands over the weekend including Graeme’s 6hp vert Buzacott. Michael Hingst had a fine show of 2 stroke marine engines, as the feature engines and tractors were 2 stroke machines. Kevin Shepherd had his big 2 stoke Crossley diesel and was ably assisted by Ray Buckley. Charlie and Lily tried out their new "A Van" towed by the Dodge with a green tractor on the back and were more than happy with it. There were quite a few Mack trucks there and maybe they will turn up at our Rally. All in All a great weekend was had whilst catching up with friends from other clubs and a few ales around the campfire made a fine Fathers’ Day and look forward to next year. Well worth travelling the distance. Below: Charlie Bartolo and his Deere Below: Peter Woodmore’s Meadowbank www.sydneyantiquemachineryclub.com The Vintage Voice SAMC Inc Newsletter No 206 – Oct 2013 – Page 2 Camp Quality Tractor Trek 19 – 21 Sept 2013 (the Club sponsored Charlie Bartolo’s Tractor) Last weekend I took part in the Camp Quality Tractor Trek. We drove through the townships of Orange, Oberon, Portland and Bathurst, a total distance of 334.5km was cover. The trek visited local schools, community groups and even a dinner hosted by Kate Bracks (winner of Master Chef 2011). The weekend was a huge success raising over $160,000.00 for Camp Quality. Great scenery and a wonderful group of drivers made the trek even better. Thank you for your support and I’m looking forward to helping out this worthy cause again next year. Charlie’s Tractor Pictured Left & Right Message from John Lawrence the Administrator of the fundraising Tractor Trek wrote to the Club: “Thank you for your support for the 2013 Camp Quality Central West Tractor Trek. Thanks to you, we have raised enough money to support almost all of the Camp Quality families in the Central West for an entire year. Congratulations.” Pictured on Right: The Tractors on a break. 2013 CLARENDON CLASSIC Rally by Stephen Gummerson There really isn’t enough room in the newsletter to show enough photos (have to see the club’s website for lots as well as YouTube videos people took), or enough space to praise all the people who helped. We know quite a few who put in a huge effort before the rally making lights, setting up the grounds, transferring stuff from Clubhouse to container, and of course Steve Muscat handling lots of calls for months. During the rally it was all work and no play for others as well like Alison and everyone on catering, Margaret as Treasurer, Jim on bins, and all those who helped unload and all the jobs to make the rally a success and leave the grounds tidy. It was noticed by other clubs that we had about 100 club members helping on the weekend, and Steve and Tim noted that guys from other clubs around Sydney helped spreading the word and organising a record number of trucks at 270. I have to say I appreciate all the publicity others did like Austin Vella and others with their big rally signs on Richmond & Windsor Roads, as well as putting the flyers in school newsletters, and Peter Woodmore posting out to all the other clubs. “Many hands make light work”. Thanks. The decision to provide kids amusements paid of with people I know saying the free jumping castle and the trailer pulled mostly by Charlie Vella were great additions for families with kids. Thanks to Marie Warby on the microphone we could hear of anything interesting, unless you were at the Tractor pull, near Steve Muscat’s V16 Detroit when he ran it, or at the far end looking at the 270 trucks. At least we don’t have homes close by to complain about our great twilight run. It’s estimated 600 people came as exhibitors or with them in their classic cars etc, 2100 others came in the gate to enjoy the rally, and the items on display are mentioned in the minutes below but I was impressed to see 135 tractors. The car clubs came as well and with 2014 having one of its themes ‘Everything British’ I would expect a big increase in the pommy car club cars next year. Start planning for next year to get pommy stuff ready as well as anything from the Dodge Brothers and related marques, as well as letting any Deutz owners you know get their beasts ready for Sept 2014. Many displays were only just ready in time with Steve still having red paint on his hands from restoring Charlotte Muscat’s David Brown and my own 1968 Commer van only roadworthy 2 days before for it’s first road trip in 23years. Great to see all the Austral engines, along with others, and there was good support for the themes from the David Brown club and also Mack Australia who brought their 50 th Anniversary truck (costs at least $420, 000 to buy). www.sydneyantiquemachineryclub.com The Vintage Voice SAMC Inc Newsletter No 206 – Oct 2013 – Page 3 The rally dinner was fantastic and the biggest ever, and it was a good time for swapping stories (of which I heard a few from Sunny and his friends) and rallies are also a good time to get advice on your engine. Next time we should get Stephen Brown’s log splitter to split on Friday night and we’d have enough wood for the rest of the rally to use. Thanks to everyone. If people help again, it will be a great 2014 and we could do a National Rally. Bendigo Bank came and you would have seen their sign on the newly painted Tractor Pull sled, and Country singer Rhiannon entertained at no cost over at the BBQ. Thankfully the weather was sunny and out of our expected profit, we donated earlier to sponsor Charlie Bartolo $880 in the camp Quality Tractor Trek, we donated $2500 (incl what Rotary gave us) to Cystic Fibrosis research. No incidents either. Congratulations. Cartoon caricature below is an original by Marie Warby. Above: The Twilight Tractor Pulling Phill & Timber Cutters display Mark & Dutchy. Steve Muscat just got the DB shiny in time. Above: Rhiannon Cooke entertained those at lunch Some excerpts from minutes of General Meeting Sept 20th Visitors: The President welcomed visitors Dave Chapman, John Turner, Bruce Gunter and Darrel Killick. Business arising from Minutes: - Cars are invited to the Small Farms Field Days on the Sunday only. - No other business arising as the meeting was devoted almost entirely to rally matters. Business arising from Correspondence: - The Rotary Club reported a very good result. On the motion of I Browning, seconded L Winney, it was agreed to match their contribution and donate $2500.00 to Cystic Fibrosis research. Rally reports: - The President thanked all who had contributed to make it the best ever rally. - S Muscat also thanked everyone for making it such a great rally. - M Warby suggested we should have electric wheelchairs for hire at the registration area. - There is a 2-disc DVD available already containing video and still photos. It is available for $20.00 including postage. It was agreed to purchase copies through the Club and orders to be taken now. Also to be advertised in the newsletter. - The food was excellent thanks to the great efforts of Tim, Alison, Shane and the ladies who helped. - M Barrett provided the following statistics: o Engines – 135; trucks – 270; tractors – 135; cars – 100; boats – 4; motorcycles – 14. Of the trucks, there were about 59 Macks and 40 Kenworths (numbers varied between Sat & Sun). Numbers through the gate: Saturday – 950; Sunday – 1150. - T Brodie suggested we establish a 10-year plan with a future fund, as many are suggesting we may host a National Rally sometime in the future and we need to be financial enough. It is Victoria’s turn after 2015, but if no Victorian bid occurs we may find ourselves in the running for 2017, but more likely 2019. We now have a lot of younger members who are willing to pitch in. To start the ball rolling, on the motion of T Brodie, seconded J Munro, it was agreed to increase the Bendigo Bank Term Deposit account. - To get some ideas of costs, S Muscat agreed to find out the cost of hiring the whole Showground. - The lack of shade at the gate troubled those working there, so on the motion of K Brodie seconded R Gear, it was agreed to purchase another gazebo. - It was agreed to purchase a 2-burner gas stove top to reduce dependence on borrowed items for food preparation. - The hot water urn stopped working during the rally although it has now come back to life. It may need replacing. www.sydneyantiquemachineryclub.com The Vintage Voice SAMC Inc Newsletter No 206 – Oct 2013 – Page 5 - - - - There is a need to replace the present sink with a double bowl type. Also an external sink is required for hand washing so people don’t use the kitchen for this purpose. L Winney raised the proposal to construct a separate shower block to overcome the problem of toilets being unavailable when the showers are in use. It will take 12 months to achieve. J Zahra suggested investigating availability of a portable building, both to reduce the time, and to be more flexible in the future. It was noted the ladies spent a very long time standing on the concrete floor. Decision to obtain rubber matting. The news that J Zahra had leveled the loading ramp area was met with acclamation, as it had proven very tricky to use in its previous state. S Brown had made some steel ramps for the Showground loading ramp. Although they initially worked fine, they failed at the combing rail end and will need to be strengthened. P Gauci suggested we just us a railway sleeper and he agreed to talk to the groundsman on which way to go. Patrick Livingstone is doing an article for TOMM on the rally. Someone needs to do one on the tractor side. Bruce Gunter spoke on behalf of the Western Sydney Truck Club describing our rally as an absolute cracker, much better and friendlier than other shows, and most enjoyable to be part of, describing it as the new Sydney Truck Show. He acknowledged the support provided by Mack Australia. He mentioned that “Crawlin-the Hume” was on next year from Melbourne. He will distribute our 2014 rally fliers. M Miller suggested we invite Shire Councilors to next year’s rally to raise their interest in its potential to be a tourist attraction, especially should we bid for a National Rally. The Rally raffle results were as follows: Buzacott engine – Vern Sotter of Galston; Wico EK magneto – member Stuart Derbyshire of Berrilee; Victa lawn mower – Mick Conroy of Bathurst. There are several rally videos on Youtube. Thanks to Charlie Vella for driving the tractor both days pulling the ride trailer which was very popular. We were praised by Rob Schoonderbeek, VP of NHMA, for our excellent observance of safety guidelines. General Business: - M Barrett is taking orders for more Club shirts. - The container now has in it most of the stuff from the Club Shed. The trailer is to be painted shortly. - D Scanes requested sanctioning of the Orange Blossom Festival Classic Car & Bike Display at the Bull and Bush at Baulkham Hills on 29-9-13. This was agreed to. - The Ploughing Day on 3 November at UWS is still on despite management changes. S Muscat is the coordinator. Food is to be organized and we should take the big marquee. - A Christmas party was discussed and the date of 30 November agreed upon. It will be afternoon and evening. - It was decided there will be no meetings in December. - I Browning spoke of the availability of a quantity of truck spares and racking being made available to Club members through Ludi de Vries. A visit is planned next week to take stock and report back to the Club. - Members were reminded the next meeting is the AGM when a new President is to be elected.
